Helsingborgs vs AIK Solna

Today’s featured game is the Allsvenskan game between giants Helsingborgs and reigning champions AIK Solna. Helsingborgs have been impressive so far this season and will look to continue that impressive run by overcoming an under-achieving but always threatening AIK Solna tonight.

Helsingborgs have beaten AIK at home for two seasons running now and have rarely looked as comfortable as they do now at home. They’ve won all four of their home games so far this season and generally look the real deal – calm, composed, efficient, organised etc. It’s strange because I’ve not seen Helsingborgs play this way for some time, really – they’ve tended to be unpredictable in recent years with occasional brilliance and occasional atrocity. The departure of legend Henrik Larsson in the break between seasons as he moved to coach Superettan outfit Landskrona BoIS was what I thought was a stumbling block for them as they looked lost without him previously. However, you could now even draw the conclusion that they relied too heavily upon him and Helsingborgs appeared to be more galvanised than ever before this season so I take my hat off to them. They’ve been one of Sweden’s biggest sides for a long time now and an Allsvenskan title is long overdue with no titles for ten long years. They looked well-balanced enough to win this one however, with IFK Goteborg and Elfsborg Boras stuttering, Kalmar meandering their way through poor form, AIK Solna not scoring goals, and only the tempremental Malmo offering any kind of realistic threat. Helsingborgs have only conceded twice in their past five games but have scored eight goals along the way so they’re looking very strong currently. I must reiterate just how good Helsingborgs have been at home this season though – they’ve won four out of four home games but three of those games have been against three sides that pose a legitimate title threat – Elfborg Boras, Malmo, and reigning champions AIK Solna respectively - so the hosts have really started this season well and I expect them to continue that run tonight.

AIK Solna do concern me, I won’t lie to you. Much like Kalmar last night, they’re due a result and they’re starting to play well again. AIK in-form don’t concede goals and it’s this type of game that could be the catalyst for their season. However, that’s mere speculation on my part and hopefully won’t affect the cold, hard logistics of this game. AIK have played four away games this season, losing twice, drawing once, and winning once. They’ve struggled because they’ve not scored goals, failing to find the net in five out of their eight Allsvenskan games this season. AIK have never been a good goalscoring side – they tend to rely on their iron defence and the odd goal to gain their wins which is why they’re struggling so much without their odd goal or two. AIK aren’t defending particularly badly but no goals means no wins! AIK are unbeaten in their last two games but haven’t performed well here in recent times so I’m going to go against their recent burst of form and say that they’ll lose this one.

Some people might be tempted to take the home win on the handicap tonight – not me. I think this game will be very close indeed and I am concerned that AIK will finally start playing well in time for tonight’s game. However, statistics and ability both favour Helsingborgs at the moment and they’ve beaten some damn good sides already this season so the odds of 5/6 on the home win look intriguing to me tonight.

Verdict: Helsingborgs to win at 5/6.

Thursday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Fulham vs Hamburger SV – home win at 6/5.

I do hate the Europa League with a passion but I’ll bravely wade into it tonight by calling a home win. Hodgson has shown his tactical supremacy in this competition this season and I’ve frankly been overwhelmed with what he’s done with the side. They’re not a great side, Fulham, but they’re exceptionally well-organised. They defend and attack in numbers, which is a priceless characteristic nowadays and will take points off most sides unless their opponents match their work-rate and take their chances. Fulham have looked very good in this competition overall and Hodgson clearly wants to win it so I’d have to give them their chances tonight, particularly given the miracles he’s worked with a sporadic Bobby Zamora.

I’d stay away from this game a lot more readily had Hamburg not sacked manager Bruno Labaddia at weekend after a horrendous 5-1 defeat at usually goal-shy Hoffenheim. Sacking him was a bit harsh but Hamburg have been tempremental under his reign and look set to struggle tonight without him. New managers often spark a revival of form but that’s generally at home so I’m not going to read too much into that. If Hamburg can concede five goals at a weak Hoffenheim side then they can concede against an astute Fulham side, basically.

Hamburg have convinced in dribs and drabs this year but have still succumbed to 3-0 defeats at the likes of Rapid Vienna earlier in this tournament. Rapid were well-organised and determined, just like Fulham, and that appears to be what Hamburg hate playing against the most. Hamburg tend to concede heavily at the most inconvenient of times and although I fear the backlash of veteran Ruud van Nistelrooy, I have to favour Fulham tonight on every front against a disjointed and demoralised Hamburg side, particularly with such generous odds.

Verdict: Fulham to win at 6/5.

  1. Great call on the Universitario v Sao Paulo game…Went for the draw in play and won some money back. Sao Paulo got a red card with 20 minutes to go which had me sweating for a while, but if anything it actually made the game more likely to end in a draw… Both teams had chances to win. Thanks Ian mate.

  2. Placed a wrong bet on the Erkensas game last night. Accidentally clicked +2 for the home team instead of -2 and just when I wanted to change it, Erkensas went 1-0 up. Big casualty there. Lech costed me big time too.

Ian, what are your thoughts on Ural taking the win as well as Mjablly just about edging Djugardens? And I have a weird feeling about Once Caldas Manizales somehow.

P.S This site is awesome, Ian. :) But gotta make back the money lost now though!

    • Unlucky mate!

Ural don’t score enough goals to win at Khabarovsk. Long long journey east – wouldn’t touch it, anything could happen bur I say draw.

Mjallby are capable but so are djurgardens so again I’d stay away, probable draw. Mjallby can’t possibly keep this up all year so it’s a matter of when thru stumble.

Don’t chase money mate – you won’t win it back!

      Good luck

  3. J2 Anybody like Mito Hollyhock in 15 minutes . I might just small stakes on it

  4. going for Helsingborg and maybe Elfsborg….will my bad luck finish tonight??:( I need it. Im losing the faith on betting.

  6. Gone for a Swedish double on Elfsborg and Helsingborg @ 2.61 with Expekt.

Good luck lads off down the pub :)

  7. Anyone know the team news for the Liverpool game? Thinking about an over 2.5.

    Good luck all.

  8. Just the single for me today.

Helsingborg at 5/6 (last nights price)

    600 sheets on this one!!

They are at 4/6 now so people are starting to back them

    Good luck all

  9. On the betting tips, what are the numbers in brackets?
    eg.
Energiya Khabarovsk vs Ural Sverdlovskaya Oblast (6)
Luch-Energiya Vladivostok vs Irtysh Pavlodar (7) under 2.5 goals
    Nizhnyi Novgorod vs Krasnodor (5)
Salyut Belgorod vs Baltika Kaliningrad (6)

    • At first I thought Newells, because Arsenal’s form has been terrible recently… However at the moment I’m thinking of going for the draw..

  10. I’m tempted to go for a South America acca tonight, any opinions on this guys?

Lima v Universidad de Chile DRAW
    Once Caldas
    Fluminese -1
    Palmeiras
    Newells v Arsenal DRAW

  11. I like Anderlecht – not keen on the other two. They should both win but…Caen don’t have to and Arles aren’t better than Nantes so I’m dubious with both although I’d call home wins if forced!

    • Do you know what mate i dont even know why im even looking at the French second division!! its been a nightmare for me so far.

I’ll keep Anderlecht in and keep looking.

      • My sentiments exactly mate. There’s not much I like tomorrow, to be honest. Maybe cast an eye over Wisla or Cluj

        • Wisla,Cluj,Rapid and I maybe Elche too…French second division is a nightmare like Phils say. Good luck….

  12. Your right mate!! There are hardly any decent games tomorrow. Think i’ll go for a treble with acca fodder.

    Anderlecht
    R.Vienna
    Wisla Krakow

    @1.5/1

    Was thinking a high stake.

  13. Ian I know you haven’t done any tips for the copa Brasil and the Argentinian league tonight, but what do you think of my acca that I posted above?

    • I’d probably give it a miss mate – it smells of a horrible card tonight. Caldas should win but have been too unreliable of late to have earned those odds. Alianza Lima have the altitude advantage and could win 4-0, frankly, but I just think that Universidad can grind them out to a draw but anything can happen in this game. Arsenal vs Newells – X2, I’d take Palmeiras out and put Cruzeiro in, and I wouldn’t handicap Fluminense.

      Good luck

  14. Arsenal vs Newell’s Old Boys

    TEAM NEWS

Sarandi Arsenal left back Javier Yacuzzi was sent off against Lanus and is suspended for this match.

Midfielders Ivan Marcone and Federico Poggi picked up their fifth yellow cards and must serve a one-game ban.

Newell’s Old Boys defensive midfielder Lucas Bernardi returns to the first eleven after serving his suspension.

Striker Cristian Nunez must complete the second of his two-match ban after his ejection in the derby.

Center midfielder Diego Mateo is available after serving his suspension for five bookings.

Midfielder Mauricio Sperdutti is doubtful with a pulled hamstring.

    Sarandi Arsenal
Suspended: Yacuzzi, Marcone and Poggi (one match)
    Doubtful: none
    Injured/Unavailable: Silva (hamstring)

    Newell’s Old Boys
    Suspended: Nunez (one match)
    Doubtful: Sperdutti (hamstring)
    Injured/Unavailable: none

    MATCH PREVIEW

For Sarandi Arsenal, the remaining games are a torture. They couldn’t reach their goals and their lack of consistency kept them out of the South American Cup spots in the standings; they are already paying attention to the relegation table for next season. Newell’s Old Boys are still in the hunt for a Cup berth: the international competition begins after the World Cup. It is a good consolation prize for a team that was kicked out of the Libertadores Cup early.

Sarandi Arsenal have lost four of their last five games and have conceded twelve goals in those matches. Goalkeeper Cristian Campestrini isn’t the sole culprit; he’s been called up to the national team by Diego Maradona. The back line isn’t performing and manager Jorge Burruchaga is under fire. “Our squad is good enough to get us out of this situation. I won’t quit,” he said after a humbling 1-4 loss at Lanus. The three absences for this match don’t make things any easier after such a meltdown.

Newell’s Old Boys are in a much better situation. Despite some early inconsistency that saw them lose a few points in the first weeks of the season, they seem well on their way to make the South American Cup. There are six berths for the competition and they are in fifth place, with a six-point lead over Velez and three games to go. Embattled manager Roberto Sensini had a lot to do with this improvement. Newell’s Old Boys didn’t miss a beat against Colon despite their absences, and now Sensini has “a nice problem”. Is there a place in the lineup for those who return from their bans? It’s hard to change a first eleven that played as well as they did last Saturday.

Newell’s Old Boys are on a roll and should win at Sarandi Arsenal but a draw isn’t out of question.

    Verdict – Newell’s DNB @ 1.85 with Interwetten – 7/10 stake.
