Wigan Athletic vs Hull City

Today’s featured game is the Premier League game between Wigan Athletic and Hull City. This game is a redundant encounter with Wigan already assured of a place in the Premier League next season and Hull City’s fate already sealed with their ticket to the Championship having already been purchased.

However, I’m going to back hosts Wigan Athletic today. I’ve been very impressed with Roberto Martinez this season and the job he’s done at Wigan Athletic, which might sound a bit bizarre considering how many goals they’ve conceded etc. but I just like what he’s done there. He’s got a bunch of well-organised players that try to play good football and he’s got some good individuals. I honestly feel he’ll do a damn good job next year given the correct resources this summer.

Wigan were a bit unlucky to lose against West Ham United in their last Premier League game. They managed to score two goals but unfortunately a spectacular strike from Scott Parker secured a much-needed win for The Hammers to guarantee them Premier League football next season. Prior to that encounter, Wigan heroically came from two goals down to overcome Arsenal in an epic 3-2 encounter. Suffice to say that Wigan are scoring a lot of goals at the moment and with strikers like Rodallega and Moreno spear-heading the attack and wingers like N’Zogbia supporting them, it’s easy to see that there’s the potential there for more to come. They need to sort their defence out but I just don’t expect their defence to be tested excessively by a meager Hull City attack tonight. My comments may be a tad harsh, however, as Wigan have been good defensively at home this season with just twenty-two goals conceded in eighteen home games – it’s their defensive record on the road which requires drastic improvement. Wigan are unbeaten in their last three home games, winning twice and drawing once, so they do bring some momentum into this game as well as an increased level of potency so I fancy Wigan to do well tonight.

Hull City showed how much their bottle had gone last match by losing 1-0 at home to a Sunderland side that don’t travel well without scoring a goal and also by having American prodigy Jozy Altidore dismissed for a stupid foul. Hull have now only managed to score just once in their past five games, losing four times, and drawing once. I don’t think I could ever label an Iain Dowie side as “lazy” or as “not working hard enough” because he motivates his sides well but they’re simply not good enough to be in the division whereas hosts Wigan Athletic certainly are. Hull have already lost thirteen out of eighteen away games this season and average conceding over two goals per away game so it’s easy to see why they’re the only side in the division yet to win an away game and it looks likely that the record mentioned above will be one that they carry into the Championship next season if trends continue. Hull have lost six out of their last seven away games and have only scored in two of those games so to say that they look vulnerable ahead of this game today is a massive understatement.

I basicaly feel that Wigan have too much quality for Hull. They’re playing better football, they’re scoring goals for fun at the moment, and they’re composed defensively when playing at home. Hull are leaky at the back, don’t score goals, and are playing badly with no reason to improve their level of performance. I feel odds for the home win should be 4/6 so backing Wigan at 4/5 should be good value tonight.

Verdict: Wigan Athletic to win at 4/5.

Monday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Empoli vs Brescia – home win at 13/10.

Hosts Empoli are the only remaining side in Serie B that are yet to lose a home game. They’ve won thirteen out of eighteen home games in Serie B, and have drawn five, thus making them a damn good side on their own turf! They average scoring well over two goals per home game and don’t even concede a goal per home game on average. No side comes close to the number of goals that Empoli have notched up at home this season and only Cittadella have conceded less at home so any side travelling to Empoli has a nightmare task on their hands. Empoli still have a good chance of making the play-offs for promotion to Serie A if they maintain their excellent run of form so motivaton is strong currently. They’ve won their last three games consecutively whilst scoring a mighty haul of twelve goals – an average of four per game, in fact. They’re unbeaten in their last five games and have won three out of their last four home games with the only side to puncture that record being league leaders Lecce, who claimed a 2-2 draw here. To be blunt, however – Empoli are absolutely on-fire at the moment, particularly with goalscoring, so it’d take a braver man than me to go against them.

Visitors Brescia are no mugs themselves with their eyes firmly fixed upon promotion too. They have the advantage over Empoli in that sense as their current league placing is already in the play-offs. However, Brescia don’t tend to travel well so that record may be in jeopardy if they’re not careful. They’ve lost seven out of eighteen away games in Serie B this season because they barely average scoring more than a goal per away game so Brescia could struggle tonight with Empoli in such fine goalscoring form. Brescia are unbeaten in five games but have drawn their last two games consecutively as their run gradually comes to an end. They’ve done well on the road of late, Brescia, but they’ve got a mammoth task to continue that form against an Empoli side in such dominant form at the moment and it’s a task I feel is frankly beyond them currently.

I expect a tight game between two sides that are well-matched here. However, you have to favour Empoli in such a rich vein of goalscoring form, particularly when they’re so dominant at home and the odds of 13/10 certainly make it good value so it has to be worth a punt tonight!

Verdict: Empoli to win at 13/10.

GAIS Goteborg vs Helsingborgs – away win at 11/10.

Hosts GAIS Goteborg have made an unspectacular start to the Allsvenskan this season but have atypically managed to cause problems when they should have no chance of taking any points from a game, which makes them dangerous opponents tonight as they’re clear underdogs. They’re unbeaten at home in the four Allsvenskan games that GAIS have played so they have some good momentum to bring into their game with Helsingborgs. They’re not as good as the visitors but that doesn’t mean too much in division where the gulf in class is not large. However, GAIS have started to struggle a bit of late despite a driven run as they were battered 3-0 by Halmstad, drew 2-2 with out-of-form Kalmar, before winning at the descending BK Hacken Goteborg. GAIS are not a bad side and I doubt that they’ll be anywhere but mid-tabe by the end of the season but they should be out of their depth against a superior Helsingsborgs side, particularly with tonight’s visitors having won all of their four trips here since GAIS’ promotion back in 2006 whilst also beating the -1.75 handicap in each game.

Visitors Helsingborgs have never looked so assured and in control! I’ve not seen this level of maturity from them for some time. I half-thought they may spoil my bet and buckle in the hom game with AIK Solna but they remained composed yet again and won yet again! If they continue this excellent run of form with such composed attacking and defending then it’s hard to envision anyone finishing above them this season. They’ve won five consecutive games leading into this match and have won three out of their four away games already this season without even conceding a goal. They’ve beaten most of their title rivals already this season so it’s hard to find a fault with Helsingborgs currently. I think they’ll lose their clean sheet record against GAIS Goteborg tonight because the hosts have a habit of being a pain in the backside but Helsingborgs have such a good record here that it’s hard to see anything but an away win occurring.

I can’t quite fathom why the bookies have put Helsingborgs at such long odds but I’ll welcome those odds with open arms. Helsingborgs are looking very much the real deal currently so the away win at 11/10 looks a good bet to me tonight!

Verdict: Helsingborgs to win at 11/10.

  1. A question to Ian, and to anyone else with experience,

WHat advice would you give to an amateur gambler to make long term profits?

I am keen to learn from all your wisdom!

    Thanks

      • ok seriously this time…

Profits are easy to make, just take a big amount and play bankers then walk.

Long term profit is much harder because of the house advantage.

Because of this, dont bet on so many teams, every team you have in a multiplier makes it more likely the bookies will keep your money.

Personally , i usually make 1-2 big bets a day consisting of safe doubles, trebles , or singles and a few smaller singles bets for fun.

        • I can only echo what Marz has said although I’d put a tad more emphasis on using gambling as a method of fun, not profit. You’ll rarely make profit in this business unless you’re sticking hefty stakes on 1X dead certs at home. If you enter it to have a bit of fun then you don’t mind too much if you lose. If you enter it with life-or-death then you tend to feel very pissed off if you lose.

          • i also think it is easier to make money by having fun than setting a target, well thats how it is for me :)

    • I personally have been betting for 3 years now and here’s some of the mistakes I made when I first started out that might help you and support the points Marz and Ian have mentioned.

      * Never ever put more than 3 bankers together in an accumulator irrespective of how “certain” you are they will win. The odds will be shite and all it takes is one fuck up and you end up losing a lot of money. Just ask Phil, (sorry fella but I had to use you as an example here :()

      * Never bet on derby games – If you do, try to keep it to low stakes. Look at last night for example, Independiente should have spanked Boca out the park but Boca who’ve won only once away this season turned up and beat the home side 3-2.

      * Try not to bet on odds less than 1.2 – even if they are teams like Madrid, Barca, United, etc..it’s football! anything can happen! Just look at Osasuna last night, it required Ronaldo to score very late on to save A LOT of punters ass’.

      * DO try to find value before betting and work out the percentage. For example, if you look at the Wigan game tonight:

Considering their form and their opponents (Hull) I give them round about a 50% chance of winning this game. So you divide 100 by 50 and you should get odds of @ 2.00 (evens). So if I find any bookie offering odds greater than 2.00 then I feel it’s a value bet. Anything below and I will leave the game alone. This is just an example btw :)

      * When you’re unsure do try to use patents, yankees, super 15 etc to make sure you cover each bet. I started out and used to aimlessly whack a load on 4 x 1, 5 x 1 and one team would always end up fucking me over. When you bet 4 x 15, 5 x 31 then even if one team messes up you can ensure you get a return! You may have to invest more but why not if it means having a greater chance of having atleast some money back?

Last but not least and most important point for me! BET FOR FUN! If you chase your loss you will lose. I guarantee you.

95% gamblers fail because they throw cash aimlessly on “bankers” and chase their losses. The other 5% are the smart ones that pick up on bookies giving wrong odds (value bets) and by assessing the bet from a bookies point of view.

      Hope that helped mate. :)

        • Sorry matey! :(

I hope you’ve recovered from that howler of a bet fella.

      • I dont like playing yankees, goliaths etc. though, the winnings are so much less if even one team fucks up, i like to put a confidence rating and construct my own multipliers from that, much like a tree, where if the one at the top fucks up then half my bets are gone.

  2. Kept picking the wrong teams yesterday. Atalanta, Frankfurt, Molde etc.

Anyway, my picks today! I like days when we don’t have that many choices!

Wigan to win and over 2.5
SAF clear -1.5 handicap and over 2.5
    Helsinborg
    Inter Turku
    Tampene & MyPa under 2.5
    Kooteepee & Jippo under 2.5
St Patricks to win and under 2.5

What do you think Ian? I’m skeptical about Bohemian though after they drew their last game.

    • Looks good enough to me mate although St.Pat’s bother me like all Irish sides at the moment. Good luck!

  3. Well was watching the highlights of the banik ostrava game with sparta prague and the ref was a woman….. why do we let this happen?

    • Lol just hope the women’s activists don’t find your IP address! ;)

  4. I am a bit doubtful about wigan, ever since steve bruce left they have been shite. I think its more of the team that is less shit will win the match, and hull arent favourites for that.

  5. Yesterday was a blast for me there is this site smart1x2 it sent me the pick on AJ to win apparentely a fixed game, which i mixed up with some picks and just won 4700$ today i c hull drawing wigan, blackburn draw and Empoli win what are your thoughts guyz the Wigan game looks obvious but with a nearly empty stadium and unpredicatble bullard in for a shocker!

    • Another question…what do you think aroun Conference National Play offs? Double Luton-Oxford in mind…..

  6. Think I’m gonna wait for Inter Turku to hit evens in-play. They’re not a good goalscoring side unless Furuholm is playing but even then it can take them time to score. They’re a superior side to Lahti (well, who isn’t?!) and should win this one comfortably – think I might just wait for better odds though. If Furuholm doesn’t start through injury (which he has been struggling with) then I’d change medium stakes to low.

    Good luck all

  7. now thats wat i call timing just as i placed the bet button victor moses scores haha lovely stuff

  8. pondering odense, helsingborg and arsenal – arsenal giving me some doubts – not seen their last couple games – how they doing?? n anyone think they can win tonight

  9. I’m an Arsenal fan and I don’t even think they can win. I would put a small bet on them though because their odds are still pretty tasty. Anyway SAF is coasting 3-0 but I didn’t buy like what I said I would because I couldn’t find it :(

    • ive got a treble on helsingborg to win & arsenal & empoli to draw..past fixtures with empoli playing at home against brescia have ended in draws but they got an unproven defence out tonight so empoli could win, oh well see what happens, helsingborg should get it done and are on an amazing run and blackburn have drawn against the other top 3 at home and not doing to bad at home and arsenal arent paying particularly well so see that as a draw aswel. however i could be totally wrong lol

  10. Ian is there 2 Bohemians? Think i have just put the wrong bet on. Is a bohemians playing UCD?? – 19:45 Bohemians v UCD 2/5 11/4 13/2

  11. Check Bet fred under Ireland premier and there are 2 Bohemians playing both at 19.45. one playing UCD and one playing Drogheda

  12. Ugh. Couldn’t place today’s for some reason. Inter Turku winning – KooTeePee HT 0-0. I feel like this could be all missed chances today. And I had a good feeling about my picks today! Big money on Helsinborg!

    • i’ve got arsenal, odense and helsingborg – arsenal 1 nil up just now but looking v v v shaky

      • Ive got arsenal, inter turku, bohemians & Helsingborg. Fingers crossed – Good luck all!!!!!

  13. Lahti have scored three in the same game – that’s the clearest sign yet not to bet again today!!

    • Congrats mate I thought Samba and Nelsen were brilliant today. Gave Fabianski a torrid time from the set-pieces! Had to love Nelsen tripping over the ball in front of Big Sam though :D

  14. Brilliant Blackburn. Thoroughly deserved the win there! I think Arsenal must be odds-on to sign a new keeper for next season :D

Had to have a cheeky fiver on Blackburn 1-0 down @ 12.00 – no team with a record at home like Blackburn ever deserves to be over 10 IMHO. Nice little after-eventing from me that ;)

Lahti though? What the fuck..I can understand them scoring one, but THREE?!

    • nice one! I didn’t have the same confidence but i had van persie anytime :-) Was it just me or did nobhead wenger not shake hands again at the end?

      Anyway….come on Helsinborgs

    • If anything mate, I reckon this affirms that Fabianski will still be there next season – Wenger’s such a stubborn man, he hates to admit he’s made a mistake. I think he’ll be more likely to buy a centre-back to replace Vermaelen this summer just through sheer irony haha :D

    • From what im reading Helsingborg is putting them under a lot of pressure and they have missed quite a few chances in the last 10mins

      • Yup, Helsingborg have been wasteful in the last quarter. The GAIS keeper has made 5 decent-ish saves to still keep them in this game. On a another day it could easily have been a comfortable win for the away side here. GAIS have had their chances too so don’t get me wrong when I say a draw is probably a fair reflection on the night.

        Full time. 0-0

      • The reason I ask is because I heard not long ago that this game was fixed to be a draw. I was a tad sceptical because it’s early season so there would be no reason for it to happen but the fact that these two sides have failed to score a goal between them seems to support the information I was given – I’d have expected at least 1-1 or an away win here. Very intriguing, indeed.

        • Well mate it’s not the first time that’s happened.

Last night the Estudiantes game against CJ was supposedly fixed for the home side to win. Juniors did take the lead but had a man sent off which changed the whole complexion of the game. And the fact that there was 23 minutes of Fergie time?! (injury time)

But it genuinely looked like a draw today mate. Helsingborg haven’t conceded and I wasn’t expecting them to either unless Wanderson came up with another wondergoal. Helsingborg just didn’t take their chances, the keeper had a good game though.

I hope you did stick a small stake on the draw though! :D

          • I’m a bit sceptical when there’s no reason for it to occur – although of course there’s always other “hidden” reasons – but it looks accurate. I just can’t see those two not managing to score a goal between them with the form that they’re both in. Still, I guess we’ll never know.

I didn’t put anything on it, no – I only heard about it half-way through the game and left it due to scepticism.

        • The Udinese game was 100% fixed yesterday. Draw odds were 1.40-70 in Italy. The mafia are at it yet again..

Juventus 1-1 against Catania looked dodgy as well..

    • I’m watching it mate.

Never thought I’d EVER say this but GAIS have been the better side and have definitely looked like they might snatch the winner. That Wanderson guy in the middle is far too good for this league. 5 million Euros he set them back and I must say what a buy!

Both Allsvenskan games are 0-0 and it’s hardly surprising seen as Helsingborg are yet to concede on their travels (hope I don’t jinx it now!) and Mjallby have “the rock”, “the baker”, whatever else you might refer Rosengren to as. He’s 38 but fuck me is this guy good! Kalmar were definitely wrong to let him go on a free! He would give Chris Samba a decent fight I reckon! :D

  15. Hi Ian, do you know whats happened with Bohemians(Ireland), they were a banker lasy year but dont seem to be the same since the new league started, was thinking of sticking a few bob on them in play but I am really cautious due to their poor start, (have they sold players on or new management or something) any info appreciated before the hard earned goes down. LOL cheers mate

    • Different things mate. All Irish clubs are struggling financially, hence the relegation of Derry and Cork. Bohemians aren’t as badly hit but each year they part with players and the gap in quality thus lessens. You also have to bear in mind that it’s early season – consistency doesn’t tend to strike so early. They’ll still win the league – just give it a few more weeks before backing them as a banker

      • They won tonight… Late late goal. They were at 9 in play just before, so there was some serious money to be made. Same with Metz who were playing against 10 men for 20 mins.

  16. It’s incredible….I’ve never seen such a day. None of the favorites did anything. The only team that did a good job is Aalesund. Just incredible.

  17. Many thanks to marz, toffee and ian for the advice, i appreciate your time in replying to me.
Lets hope we’re all successful in the summer months ahead, im especially looking forward to the world cup.

MAde a very small profit today, about 3.5%, sri lanka win in the cricket and hull lay in a double.
