Goias vs Atletico Mineiro

Today’s featured game is the Serie A game between Goias and Atletico Mineiro in Brazil. Both sides are battling against the dreaded drop so we should see a hard-fought game between two relatively poor sides tonight as a result.

Looking at hosts Goias first, however – bottom of the table after seventeen games with three wins all season – it doesn’t look good, does it? Goias fans have reason for concern too as their side just doesn’t score enough goals to drag themselves away from the relegation zone. Only newly-promoted Ceara and striker-less Flamengo have scored as few goals as they have this season but even those two sides can’t match Goias’ paltry record of six goals scored in eight home games. It speaks volumes as to why Goias have won just once in those eight games, drawing three times and losing four times along the way. They don’t concede many at home, to their credit, but just one goal can be a killer if you don’t score the goals to match your opponents. The problem in the squad obviously starts with quality; something they have very little of. Their best striker is Everton Santos and even he’s not able to hold this club up on his own. Where else is the stability in their squad – Rafael Toloi? Too young. Amaral and Jonilson in midfield? Maybe. There’s not enough leaders in this side and not enough goalscorers so Goias are in a very bad way indeed, particularly on the back of four consecutive defeats with one goal scored and nine goals conceded.

Visitors Atletico Mineiro aren’t a particularly bad side in all honesty – they just can’t defend. Naturally, they have their key players that bail them out from tricky situations, namely experienced midfielder Ricardinho and ex-PSV Eindhoven striker Diego Tardelli in attack, who is their leading goalscorer. That’s two “match winners” that they boast over their hosts Goias as Goias really lack that extra edge when they have possession – someone to make something happen. Manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo knows the script; he’s been around long enough and is good enough to keep Atletico in the division, in my opinion. Like most Brazilian clubs, Atletico Mineiro struggled to hold onto their more important players from last season with Jonilson moving to Goias, Renan moving to Guarani, Thiago moving to Atletico Goianiense etc. Most notable was the departure of Tardelli’s strike partner Eder Luis, who moved to SL Benfica for a brief loan spell. He returned to Mineiro at the start of August but has failed to recapture the form that saw he and Tardelli forge one of the most lethal strike duos in Brazil last season. Atletico Mineiro are very much a home side which is why they’ve struggled on the road this season and I don’t expect anything different tonight although I have to confess that I do rate them as a better side than Goias.

So – a Goias side that doesn’t score goals at home against an Atletico Mineiro side that doesn’t score goals away! Five out of Atletico’s last six away games have gone under 2.5 goals and four out of Goias’ last six home games have gone under 2.5 goals. Five out of the last six meetings between these two sides have gone under 2.5 goals and with neither side keen on scoring and both probably happy to take a draw here, my call is under 2.5 goals at slightly generous odds.

Verdict: Under 2.5 goals at 17/20.

Wednesday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Vitoria vs Internacional – home win at 13/10.

This was a contender for game of the day because I have an awful lot of faith in Vitoria at home as they consistently demonstrate year after year just how hard a region Bahia is to travel to. They’re not free of the relegation zone yet but I have very little doubt in saying I’m confident they’ll avoid relegation because of their excellent home form. They’ve played eight home games this season, winning four times, drawing three times, and losing just once. They abandon their usually strong defence when playing at home in favour of a more ruthless attacking football and as a result, only Corinthians and Avai have scored more than they have at home this season in Serie A. It’s also worth noting that Vitoria do concede a lot of goals with their haphazard attacking football with only Atletico Mineiro the only side to have conceded as many goals as Vitoria have at home this season. However, Vitoria have looked strong lately with two wins (at home to Santos and away against Cruzeiro), a valiant defeat at Corinthians last match, and an unimpressive 1-1 draw with Guarani although that’s the only blemish in their last four games, in my opinion. Generally speaking, the only way to stop Vitoria taking points at home is to outscore them, as obvious as it may sound. Vitoria haven’t failed to score in a Serie A home game since November 2009 so you know what you’re up against when you face them away from home!

Visitors Internacional have suffered something of a contintenal hangover after beating Mexican side Guadalajara in the Copa Libertadores final with a string of unconvincing results following that historic result. They’ve drawn at home to lowly Atletico Goianiense but have then beaten both Avai away and Botafogo at home, which looks good on paper but their performances haven’t impressed me, to be honest. They’ve won their last two games 1-0, which is fair enough – a win is a win, after all. However, they’re facing a side tonight that almost certainly will score against them and with Internacional looking as impotent as ever, it’s hard to see them doing damage to their hosts tonight. The reason they’ve struggled moreso than normal of late is because star striker Alecsandro and Argentinian midfielder Guinazu have both been missing through injury since the Copa Libertadores final and if the information I’ve been given is correct then they’ll both miss this game too. To go to Vitoria with an under-strength side is never a good idea and although Internacional don’t concede many on the road, they don’t score vast amounts either, particularly without Alecsandro, who has scored over a third of their goals away from home this season. His replacement Rafael Sobis isn’t what he used to be and his lacklustre displays haven’t impressed me whatsoever so altogether, Internacional should have problems tonight.

Vitoria have beaten Internacional at home for three consecutive seasons now and I don’t see an Internacional side playing tonight that is capable of rectifying that record. For that to happen, they’re going to need goalkeeper Renan in top form, midfield duo Andrezinho and D’Alessandro in top form, and striker Rafael Sobis back to his best and I personally feel all of the above are rather a long shot. Vitoria are always solid at home because of the united front that they present so for me, this game has the hallmarks of a scrappy but valuable home win for Vitoria against continentally-hungover Internacional.

Verdict: Vitoria to win at 13/10.

Atletico Paranaense vs Ceara – home win at 9/10.

This one’s considerably easier to write about – one good home side against one very poor side! Simple! No defeats in three games for Atletico gives them the momentum to do well tonight, particularly as they’ve won two of those games and kept two clean sheets along the way. They’ve played Santos, Sao Paulo, Flamengo, and Gremio in their last four games and have won twice and drawn twice, which should give you some indication as to how good they are at home. They don’t score enough goals in general but a weak Ceara side should play a part there. I know statistics show that Ceara are a strong defensive unit but that was under their first and second manager respectively. Their third manager of this season is attempting a more suicidal attacking football. It’s a respectable aim, I admit, but it’s a foolhardy one because Ceara are really a very poor side. Look upon them as a type of Stoke City of the Brazilian Serie A and you’ll know what I mean (and that’s no insult to Stoke, incidentally!) – if they abandon their defensive shape, they get ripped apart. Their attacking football paid dividends at home to Gremio in a 2-1 win but that’s the only time it’s worked with Botafogo beating them since than and a weak Gremio Prudente claiming a 2-2 draw at Ceara last match. I basically expect Ceara to attack Atletico tonight and as Atletico are a better side, I fancy them to make the most of it. The odds are a tad lower than I’d hoped but I still like the win as Atletico’s goalscoring problems should be resolved by Ceara coming out of their shell and attacking so I expect a home win tonight. With the above in mind, over 2.5 goals at 21/20 also looks intriguing despite contradicting statistics!

Verdict: Atletico Paranaense to win at 9/10.

Ferencvaros vs Gyori ETO FC – home win at 6/5.

This is a risky call but I’m banking on Ferencvaros’ pride doing a lot of damage here. Ferencvaros are the biggest Hungarian side by a mile and their determination to be back at the top of the Soproni Liga is massive, as their active interest in the transfer market showed over summer. The acquisition of Czech attacker Marek Heinz was an inspired one both for his experience and ability and he’s shown glimpses of his ability for Ferencvaros already this season, happily. Serbian midfielder Stanic was signed from Disogyori VTK after an impressive campaign too so Ferencvaros haven’t exactly rested on their laurels having avoided relegation after their first season back in the top flight of Hungarian football. Their battling spirit and intense support often gives them an extra man so you’ll rarely find me going against Ferencvaros. However, those two aspects combined can also result in Ferencvaros losing a man, as it proved in the derby at home to Budapest Honved lately, where the afore-mentioned Stanic was dismissed in Ferencvaros’ only defeat of the season thus far. Although Ferencvaros’ defence is questionable, their attack rarely is as they’ve proven by scoring at least once in all of their games so far this season so my only doubt here is whether they’ll outscore their opponents or not, although a draw at impressive Fehervar last match has certainly done enough to convince me that they’re a lot more capable this season than they were last season.

It aids my bet that Gyori ETO FC have had European committments for some time now because their squad is looking rather stretched. Finding an adequate replacement for departed Estonian midfielder/striker Tarmo Kink has proved tricky, as has the departure of midfielder Jozsi to their hosts today. Gyori ETO FC still have a very capable squad and their strength has always been defence so the challenge is for Ferencvaros to shatter it today. However, given that Gyori have only just returned from Croatia to play their fourth game in twelve days, you have to fancy the visitors to be a little jaded here. Their overall domestic displays this season have looked rather jaded and understandably so – European football has to be their priority. However, despite Gyori’s defence looking about as strong as usual, their attack doesn’t look as threatening and with tiredness sure to be a factor here, I find it hard to be very concerned about Gyori today, as dangerous as that could prove to be.

Ferencvaros beat title candidates Gyori ETO FC 1-0 here last season and in general have a very strong home record against their visitors today, a record that stretches back to the 90′s so the hosts know how to beat the pretenders to what they believe is their throne. Ferencvaros are strengthening year by year and it shouldn’t be too long before they’re competing with Debreceni VSC, Gyori ETO FC, and Fehervar for the Soproni Liga title. Visitors Gyori ETO FC are finding life in the spotlight a little harder than normal and a trip to volatile Ferencvaros at this stage of the season should be considered rather unwelcome. I therefore think that the odds on the home win are decent value although this should be a close game nonetheless.

Verdict: Ferencvaros to win at 6/5.

  1. Nice call with Oriente Petrolero, Ian! It was the perfect bet in a way because it was your featured selection, it was very good odds, and it all went according to plan with a comfortable 1-0 win. Also, I didn’t ever feel at any stage in the game that they were going to throw it away. I won a few quid on that one so cheers mate!

By the way, I’m going to start my new betting season as of today since it’s the start of the new month and I’ve set my bankroll at £50. I decided to stay with William Hill in the end because although William Hill have less fixtures available to bet on, they do normally have a broader range of markets which I do like. I’ll give them a chance because I tend to do alright when betting with them for some reason and when I was on Bet365, I kept missing the betting deadlines before kick-off because I generally leave it right until the last minute before placing my bets. I think it was because I was getting confused with their whole layout and I found it prolonged to find certain bets in time, something that doesn’t happen with my on William Hill because it feels at home and I know where everything is. Anyway, this is really it this time. I’ve got £50 and I’m going to see what I can do with it. No more stupid bets or pointless accumulators! It’s time to get down to business. :)

    • I agree with Charlie. Good pick Ian. Good thought through ideas behind your picks that makes it possible to understand what you see and then one can decide by themself if one want to back it or not.

I have a separate account were I try some of your picks and keep it away from my own picks. Small sum of money. I bet 1/3 and see if it grows or not. If Im lucky and pick the right ones that Ian get right it will grow otherwise the small money will fade away and its no big deal.

As to my own game, isnt working at the moment. I still need to develop and experiment. Its fun to try to figure out think and develope methods and see if I can get good values to use.

    • Yeah, I agree mate. There probably is a method that can be used to make money through value bets. However, if I do two bets in one day, I find that I generally win one bet and lose the other. Thus, I either end up breaking even or making a slight loss. That’s the pattern that tends to happen with me. However, by changing my approach and only betting on things that I’m very confident about then I hope that it will increase my chances of making money. Normally I get carried away and I make bets just because I’m bored on things that I’m not entirely confident about and I end up losing most of the time. Or if I lose a lot of money then I get pretty desperate and start chasing to make up for the losses. I think it’s important that I get off to a good start because when I get going, I normally do alright and don’t get carried away.

I might do that as well. I might put some money in another account and follow all Ian’s tips each day to see whether I can make some money that way and I’m sure I probably can.

    • Also, luck is always important and when it is not with you then it is difficult to make good profits. You though don’t need to have luck if you diversify and play few accys all the time. I have no luck these days but I am able to be on break even because I always managed to get a one or two safe accys that saves the day.

I have now lost four last game matches in a row (Barcelona was the game yesterday), KR took away a nice profit on monday by not managed to get at least a point against FH, same with Ranheim on sunday.

My point is that in my case it has been the last game in the accy that has not come through. That is going to change it always does and when that will happen then I will win many in a row and get myself back on the profit road :-) Hopes it starts today, I have now been waiting for a turnaround for quite sometime. These break even days or small losses are so boring :-(

  2. Bloody Barcelona team, they were really bad, fourth final game that I watch that i loose. Vasco, Real Madrid, Inter and now Barcelona. I only needed a draw, but Barcelona were never going to score. Peñarol were much better and will win the second match easily.

I am so frusterated to spend my night watching this terrible game.

    • Bizarre, that one – it was Barcelona who looked unfit and lacking in composure. I agree – I’ll be all over Penarol in the second leg.

      Sorry mate!

    • This was one of those games that you knew from the start that would not go your way. Just sad to spend time watching that kind of a game. If there had been any luck then the game had ended 0 – 0 but that was not the case.

We thougj now know that we back Penarol in the second game.

Also Universitario can not play away from home so back them at home and the team they play against away.

  3. Hey can you give me an opinion on the copa del rey, expecially on betis match and on the match of shedd wedd against notts? thanks!!!

    • I may cover the Copa del Rey in the later stages this year – not sure yet.

Thoughts for this round – I like Alcorcon, Betis, Gimnastic de Tarragona, Cordoba, and maybe Ponferradina.

Sheff Wed vs Notts – gotta go with the home win after Sheff’s latest result but I’d probably avoid the game.

    • Last year the 2nd round had 11 home wins , 7 draws and 4 away wins. So you should be pretty safe with doing double 1X. So taken Ian picks in account maybe it could be good bet to do.

      Betis: 1
      Alcorcon: 1X
      Gimnastic de Tarragona: 1X
      Cordoba: 1X
      Ponferradina: 1X

      Odds: 5.31

    • Of cource of the few away wins (I think they were 3) I had to pick one of them, Gimnastic de Tarragona: 1X :-(

    • ok there were 6 away wins, 11 draws and 5 home wins so statisticly this makes scense to loose one away win like I did. But I don’t have luck with me.

  4. right i am going to give kashima antlers a go – £900 @ 10/11 with a view to HIFK soccer later this afternoon – time will tell good luck all

    • Nice one, mate! I was going to go with Kashima Antlers as well but I wasn’t really confident enough to go with it.

    • Yeah, very much so mate. I haven’t placed a bet yet today. There’s literally nothing at all. The only teams that I considered backing were Kashima, Ferencvaros, Assyriska and Sheffield Wednesday. All pretty dangerous and that’s why I left it but it looks like it would’ve been a decent day if I went with them. I like Real Betis but the odds are too short I reckon. I’m sure I’ll find something but if I don’t, then I don’t. I’m not going to start placing bets because I’m desperate. Anyway, good luck for the rest of the day mate! :)

  5. One of my trys for today

    Pohang Steelers vs. Seoul 1 @ 2,51

I see good value here and estimate that Pohang have 50 % chance here. My picks havent been so good lately to I may fall on this one too.

Following values 50/18/32 accourding to me.

  6. back tampines at anything remotely near evens

does anyone else want to follow me and back the fuck out of everton this weekend? 3/1, criminal odds.

    • Everton aren’t playing this weekend, so that’s unlikely :)

You keep trying to rally support for this bet – wait until nearer the time if that’s what you want to go for!

  7. I think I’m gna back Suwon Bluewings in play DNB @ 2.5… They’ve won their last 5 and apparently have been on top of Seongnam.

  8. Alright, let’s what’s concerning the Ferencvaros – Gyor matchup today:

Ferencvaros might be missing their most important defender Tutoric and other key man Rodenbücher from defense, so coach Laszlo Prukener decided to try out something new – a 3-4-3 attacking lineup.

Gyor also has an important player, Stanisic missing from defense, but the rest of the team is as usuall. Gyor had a long EL qualifiers campaign, and were on par with Dinamo Zagreb last week until the referee had a dubious call by awarding 2 penalties to the host for nothing. Coach Attila Pinter was complaining about “problems and fatigue” but of course they will do their best in Budapest. Nonetheless he is the last coach to have won a top flight title with Hungarian giants Ferencvaros…

Ferencvaros’s defense was all shaky this season but their attacking play is promising, and I’m sure Heinz and Rosa will just get better by time. They will attack I’m sure and will try to control the game. The big question of this match is Gyor. They are on a bad run, their EL campaign was tiring and put much fatigue on the squad. Now they should concentrate on the league only, but their attack is still not working as smooth as it did last year with Kink in the lineup. They lost recently 2-1 to Vasas in Budapest who are also emphasizing attacking football. Ferencvaros is a better quality team, the home advantage should give them the edge to put 1-2 goals past Gyor. Lineups according to Hungarian sports journal:

FTC: Ranilovic – Csizmadia, Tutorics, Junior – Rósa D., Maróti, Józsi, Tóth B. – Schembri, Heinz, Andrezinho. Coach: Prukner László
GY?R: Sztevanovics – Babic, Fehér Z., Djordjevics, Szabó O. – Ceolin, Tokody, Pilibaitis, Völgyi – Bugerra, Alekszidze. Coach: Pintér Attila

    My prediction:

    2-0

  9. i fancy HIFK @ 5/4 today – fail to win today and their promotion chances are all but over – they have been struggling results wise of recently but i am hoping they can do the business ! unsure of stake atm

  10. I just took a look at Aengelholm against Assyriska. Its a very difficult game to bet at. I get numbers 42/35/23 on that game but I just weight head to head quite little and I take the last five home against last five away but I also see that Assyriska is doing well.

For me it feels like big warning for draw. Im allergic to bet draw games so I will probably pass this one.

    • Just my calculations. 42 % chans for hometeam to win. 32% for draw and 23 % for away win.

Who knows how the result will end but I just calculate the numbers and use that to estimate the outcome and see if its value.

42 % for homewin becomes fictive odds around 2,38 then I see what odds there is. The odds was 2,50 for home win thats about 5 % margin and I want more than that because I think my numbers have more margin of errors. Im getting interested when it comes close to 20 % margin because I think I can exclude margin of errors in my own numbers.

But Im testing. Adding adjust balance of different factors. and weight it all together.

I have only been doing this for a few weeks. Ofcourse I can lean on others peoples numbers but then I dont know exactly what estimations they put it and how they weight it.

Aengelholm won the game , as I said I thought big warning for draw.

I just have fun doing this.

  11. Managed to break even yesterday despite putting in a lot on bloody Hoffenheim! Would have made a lot had they won but wasn´t to be!

Anyway, today is a new day! Fancy Assyriska a bit but won´t touch it. Too unreliable, although they do have a couple of quality players able to turn it on.

Everyone seems to be on Ferencvaros today. Interesting.

Oh well. Be back later – like the plague.

    • “Lightning struck twice in successive days for one lucky Sky Bet customer as he netted himself more that £500,000 with two football accumulator bets. The unnamed customer from Hampshire landed £250,000 on Thursday night as his £450 five-fold football bet on BATE (3/1), Hapoel Tel Aviv (7/4), Debrecen (7/2), NK Maribor (2/1) and Aktobe (11/4) came in.

And remarkably less than 24 hours later the same punter repeated the feat as his £600 five-fold consisting of Djurgardens (2/1), MTK Budapest (6/4), Kaiserslautern (13/2), Southend (10/3) and FC Erzgebirge (8/13) came in returning another £250,000. Earlier this month, the same punter also landed £90,000 as a treble came in.”

      Tad jealous!

    • When you are willing to do a £450 bet on a five-fold accy then you can win big, I think my stomich though is not ready for laying such ammounts on a accy.

    • Agree.

I´m backing Brighton today. Looks like Leyton´s resting a couple of players. Waiting for the team-sheet though. Cox, Revell and McGleish supposed to be given this one off.

Low stakes as always when cup game.

    • mkw your so predictable went with Kashima Antlers cheers and gone with the Ladies over 2.5 goals but not sure why?

  12. haha – the ladies is a dead rubber for me as HIFK 1-0 down already and playing with 10 – 6/4 on a straight win is reasonable though but quite why i am discussing a womens match for merits beggars belief

  13. Hey Ian,

Would you advise touching fluminese tonite, the odds are abit short but with their quality i expect them to bounce back after the draw with sao paulo? What do you reckon?

    • I’m in the same boat, really. They’re still playing well and were unlucky last match with a missed penalty and goalkeeping blunder. They’re still a very good side but I can’t quite put my finger on my nervousness regarding this game – think it’s because Scolari is in charge of Palmeiras and they’re a funny side at the best of times, always capable of causing an upset. Instinct says leave it but everything else says that the home win really should occur here.

    • Palmeiras have won the last 6 though.

I think it´s a difficult game because Palmeiras don´t concede too much away (11 in last 10) but Fluminense score for fun at home. 2 goals a game in the last 10.

Read Valdivia might miss out for Palmeiras.

Might do a Cruzeiro/Fluminense double cos I really like Cruzeiro tonight.

      • Bear in mind Cruzeiro aren’t at home though – neutral venue. I agree that they should win it anyway though.

Palmeiras have won the last 6 what?

    • Ah sorry I mean, they have only lost 2 in the last 14 and won 6 out ofthe last 10. Just stats!

Thanks for Cruzeiro Ian. Might have a second glance! They´re rebuilding stadium?

      • It’s the kind of game Palmeiras are irritating enough to win with no right to do so.

Kinda. The stadium is being renovated for WC2012 so neither Cruzeiro or Atletico Mineiro are playing home games for a while, although the “neutral” venues are in the surrounding Belo Horizonte area.

  14. What you guys think about this? Seems suspicious to me… Although it seems he did correctly pick the Sporting Lisbon game going over 3.5. Might put a couple of quid on the tip anyway. Ferencvaros tip looks fantastic at the moment Ian!

  15. Super signing we´ve just made! Van der Vaart! Not very expensive either apparently. Don´t know how we´ll survive the CL, the league, League Cup and FA Cup though. Tough season ahead especially if you consider we lost to Wigan, at home! :D

  16. I keep trying to post the link to what I’m referring to, but it’s not coming up on here… Guess it’s a setting you’ve got the blog on mate. It’s a link to a site where this guy is tipping the Alcorcon v Celta game to go over 3.5. I’m always wary of these tips, but thought I should still share it with you guys so you can make your own minds up. (the guy did correctly predict the Sporting game going over 3.5…) I’ll probably stick a couple of quid on it just out of interest.

    • There’s a chance, I suppose – Alcorcon are a very attacking side. Celta are an unders side though generally so I dunno. I fancy Alcorcon to beat them though.

    • Yea looking at the stats it seems very risky, but looking at the stats for Sporting’s last game, over 3.5 looked a crazy bet! I’ll give it a go speculative stakes, odds of 4.4 why not!

  17. zalagerlise te -1 {phew} and ians tip of feravacous. nice little double. gonna throw the winnings on sheff wednesday. why??? not coz of home advantage or there much better record, no no. its because today is wednessday :D

  18. BTW Ian, Hallenius deal is off and there´s complete chaos at the board of directors for Hammarby. Deal for Hallenius is now off. It was 2.5M EURO (but he was supposed to be loaned back to HFF I think for the remains of the Swedish season) but an Italian lawyer´s firm wanted 800.000 EURO for sort of taking care of the business for the two clubs. That´s why HFF didn´t want to sell, because of the hefty amount. Now there´s a fight in the board room between the directors because some wanted it to go through and some didn´t and one or two suits have been forced to leave their jobs.

So complete chaos over the proposed sale. Shame for Hallenius though. Had probably deserved that move.

    • Ouch! Sounds a complete mess!

Never mind – I’m sure Rosenborg or Copenhagen will come and pick him up soon!

  19. Well the over 3.5 came in! Maybe that guy does have some inside info… Bit dodgy, but I’m happy to win a packet ;) thanks for the Ferencvaros tip once again Ian!

  20. really good tip RYAN. i was gonna bet over 2.5 but BIG it was 1.55 around 30 mins. bottled it and bought some stuff of the net instead. even when i do the right thing, its wrong :)
