Interview with Jonathan from Sportingly Better

jonathanToday I was lucky enough to interview Jonathan from SportinglyBetter.com. Just from looking a the site you can see how much time and effort is put into delivering excellent content to its readers.

Toby — For people who don’t know you could you give us a quick background into who you are?

Jonathan — I’m Jonathan and I’m the owner of www.sportinglybetter.com – a free football betting tips website in the UK that has been running successfully since 2008.

Toby — How long have you been a tipster for?

Jonathan — Much like many of your members, I’ve been placing bets as early as I legally could and I’ve been tipping professionally for the past five years.

Some of your fans may remember me from my tips on Goal.com in their “Five to Follow” series and “Goal Getter” column, where I finished in profit for each feature.

Toby — During your time with Sportingly Better have you noticed any weird changing trends in the world of online football betting?

Jonathan — I’ve noticed the rising popularity in the Asian markets over the last two years, but one thing that never changes is punter’s never ending love affair with high-odd accumulators and £10-£1,000 challenges.

The value on goals markets seems to be squeezed in the main European leagues, so that may be one area to focus on less in the coming season, but you can get good gains betting on 1st half goals or second half goals and I expect those markets to be on the rise this season.

Toby — What does an average day look like for you?

Jonathan — Every morning begins with a daily dose of football news. If you’re playing the ante-post markets currently then even the gossip columns are useful, particularly if you trade on the exchanges for high stakes.

After that I’ll follow other tipping sources I trust and have gained access to over the years to build my betting insight for the forthcoming weekend and action.

I’ll update my tipping sheet and then correlate my own thoughts and findings with my stats pack. Any tips that get flagged up I will share with our visitors on SportinglyBetter.com.

Toby — What tools do you recommend to help you make the right betting choices?

Jonathan — Punters should use odds trackers. If you’re confident about a selection, for no extra effort you’ll be in more profit if your tip rolls in.

Betting staples such as Soccerway, Soccerstats and WhoScored are great and if you’ve got patience the previews on BBC sport for UK matches late on a Friday night are worth a read.

Toby — If you had one tip you could give to our readers about football betting in general, what would it be?

Jonathan — ‘Know your league’

It’s not something we promote on the site because our fans like to bet on the popular European football leagues, but focusing on more obscure leagues are the best way to beat the bookies.

The odds will certainly be priced more in your favour if you go after one of the lower leagues in Scandinavian football instead of the English Premier League.

Toby — What have you found most challenging about doing a tipster service online?

Jonathan — Certainly the time that goes into posting a tip. For every set of tips that get published, we might spend upwards of 5 even 10 hours researching those bets in the first place.

Toby — Who do you support? Do you let your love for them effect your betting?

Jonathan — For my sins I’m a Manchester United fan. I’m not one of those fans who abstains from betting on their own team, but I certainly don’t bet on them freely.

United have a nice run to begin with so I might be looking at the win market AND over 2.5 goals given the switch in formation to a three man defence and lack of defensive additions.

Toby — If there is one thing you could change about football what would it be?

I’m not a big fan of FIFA’s governance. The structure and committees seem to be far overdue an overhaul.

Toby — Thank you so much for this, is there anything else you would like to add?

Jonathan — Don’t forget to check www.sportinglybetter.com for our ante-post predictions and our free football tips and accumulator bets right throughout the season.

Thanks Toby!

Thanks so much to Jonathan for taking the time to answer my silly questions! If you work as a football tipster and either have your own site or work for someone and would like to be interviewed, please get in contact with Toby :-)
