KuPS Kuopio vs FC Honka Espoo

Today’s featured game is the Veikkausliiga encounter between relegation battlers KuPS Kuopio and title hopefuls FC Honka Espoo. The hosts have started playing better football lately simply because they have to to stay in the Veikkausliiga. They’ve won three from their last five games, losing two along the way, their most recent of which was a 3-0 humbling at TPS Turku last match. The hosts are in a better position than their fellow relegation stragglers RoPS Rovaniemi and JJK Jyvaskyla but will still seek any possible points to secure their Veikkausliiga status where possible. However, despite KuPS Kuopio’s recent valiant efforts, what we’ve found out is that when they encounter a top quality side with valiant efforts because their need for points is great too…KuPS Kuopio get swept away. TPS Turku proved that last match and I rate FC Honka Espoo as being better than TPS Turku, if only marginally. The visitors average scoring over two goals per game and have won four of their last five games. The contrast of quality between these two sides is vast and when a good side plays with great motivation, they almost always win. FC Honka Espoo have to win this game to have any hope of winning the Veikkausliiga, title, which is looking unlikely now due to HJK Helsinki’s somewhat simple home games remaining. However, today’s visitors aren’t going to let it slide that easily and will be well-motivated for today’s game. Frankly, I’m beyond surprised that the odds on this game are 19/20 because there’s such a big difference between these two sides that it’s unreal. I expect the odds to drop so take them whilst you can!

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

KuPS Kuopio vs FC Honka Espoo - away win at 19/20 – see introduction for full details.

Internacional vs Flamengo – home win at 3/4. Despite the recent poor form of hosts Internacional (two consecutive domestic defeats), it’s undeniable that Internacional remain the better side between these two clubs. Their home form is still amongst the best in the league with eight wins from twelve games, losing just twice on the way. Flamengo, despite being a good side, are a poor away side. They’ve lost six away games from eleven and won just twice. They’re in good form with three wins from four games but they’re going to have a very tough game here as they’ve lost three of their last four away games against Internacional, drawing the other a couple of seasons ago. For me, form takes a backseat here as there’s a significant quality gap so the home win at 3/4 looks good for me.

Swansea City vs Sheffield United – away win at 13/10. Promotion hopefuls Sheffield United journey to Wales to take on out-of-sorts Swansea City. The hosts are without a win in their last four games, drawing three and losing once. It’s more than apparent to see exactly where Swansea City’s problems lie at the moment with just a single glance at the league table – goalscoring. They’ve managed to score just three goals in their first eight games of the season, which isn’t nearly good enough, as I’m sure you’re all aware. I think it’s fair to say that they’re really missing Jason Scotland since his summer transfer to Wigan Athletic. Today, Swansea City are hosting a Sheffield United side that have won three from their last five games and are generally looking pretty reliable when it comes to winning games. I can’t see an out-of-form side that can’t score goals playing against a better side and obtaining a result so I’m siding with the away win at 13/10.

Ipswich Town vs Newcastle United – away win at 13/10. Hosts Ipswich Town are playing better than they have done all season with just two defeats in their last five games, drawing the other three. That said, it’s still more than evident the number of problems they actually have as they’ve still not won a league game in eight attempts. Today they host a Newcastle United side that were humbled 3-0 mid-week by Plymouth Argyle in the League Cup. However, I would urge you all to disregard this as Newcastle United fielded a lot of youngsters in that game as they are prioritising promotion this season. As far as league form goes, Newcastle United have won four from their last five games and are currently second in the Championship table. Effectively, Newcastle United are a better side a and are in better form so an away win looks fairly straightforward at 13/10.

Bristol Rovers vs Brighton & Hove Albion – home win at 4/5. A great start to their campaign has seen Bristol Rovers soar to third place in the table with six wins from eight games. They’ve won four of their last five games and are obviously on a massive high at the moment. Bristol Rovers aren’t a prolific side but they’re certainly effective. Today they host a Brighton & Hove Albion side that that had been on a good run before losing 3-2 at home to Southend United last match. Two wins from eight games says that Brighton & Hove Albion could be in for a long season, especially as there’s only one side in the whole division that has currently conceded more goals than they have. To put it bluntly, the visitors look like cannon fodder currently and the hosts look like the cannon. 4/5 on this selection should be a great bet!

Shrewsbury Town vs Northampton Town – home win at 4/5. Four straight defeats has now seen recently relegated Northampton Town slide to just fourth bottom. They’ve lost five games from eight so far and don’t appear to be showing any signs of getting out of their rut. Hosts Shrewsbury Town have been a “home side” for some time now and this season isn’t proving too different as they’ve already notched up two home wins. Three wins in four games has got them to seventh in League Two and form/momentum is pointing to this record being continued today. Taking the home win at 4/5 should be a good bet today.

Maag Tammeka Tartu vs Tulevik Viljandi – home win at 2/1. I know Maag Tammeka Tartu aren’t a particularly good side but they warrant better odds than 2/1, surely? It was only last season that they finished above Tulevik Viljandi, if only on goal difference. They’ve also won this fixture for three out of the last four Meistriliiga campaigns, drawing the other game. Whereas the table this year shows a clear points difference between the two sides, I don’t think there’s much in it quality-wise. You also have to take into account that Tulevik Viljandi haven’t won in five games, losing their last three on the bounce. Maag Tammeka Tartu, however, have won their last three games and have some great momentum entering this game. Frankly, I’d expect a lot lower odds but I’m happy to have a medium stake on the home win at 2/1 with the above information in mind!

Inter Turku vs Tampere United – home win at evens. After their defeat last match at home to HJK Helsinki, Tampere United’s surprise title challenge is now finished with and they look to battle out a Europa League place with today’s hosts Inter Turku and IFK Mariehamn. Yes, I am not including Haka Valkeakoski in this equation because they’re atrocious and I’ll be astounded if they make it! Basically, this match has suddenly become a lot more important than was initially thought. Fortunately for Inter Turku, they’re hosting a side that have lost more games away games than the majority of the Veikkausliiga. In fact, only three sides have lost more away games and they’re the bottom three in the Veikkausliiga! They hosts have got some good momentum at the moment as they’re unbeaten in four games, winning twice and drawing twice. It doesn’t seem to matter what form or momentum Tampere United have – they just seem to win at home and lose away, generally! I can’t say I think anything different is going to occur today, either – Inter Turku have got enough to win this game and form says that they will. Evens on this selection should be a reliable bet.

FC Koln vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen - away win at evens. Despite a disappointing cup defeat mid-week, Bayer 04 Leverkusen are playing very well in the Bundesliga. They’ve currently won four games from six and remain unbeaten in second place. Today they travel to FC Koln, a side that has managed just one victory in their six games thus far, losing four along the way. They’ve not won any games at home in this campaign and although they’ll look to make it difficult for Bayer 04 Leverkusen to play their football today, I can’t help but feel that when the final whistle goes, it’ll be an away win that has happened due to the quality and efficiency of Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The away win at evens could prove very valuable indeed today!

Szombathelyi Haladas vs Diosgyori VTK – home win at 5/6. Both of these two sides have made atrocious starts to the season but one of them shouldn’t really be there; Szombathelyi Haladas. They had a great Soproni Liga campaign last year and managed to play a few European games this year as a result of it. They’re a decent side and have proven such by gaining an impressive win against Fehervar this season. Their general form has been their let-down as opposed to their actual ability. However, their form has shown signs of improvement lately having only lost two of their last five games and having scored nine goals in the process. Despite being above Szombathelyi Haladas, Diosgyori VTK are in a worse position in my eyes because they don’t have a particularly good squad and they’ve now lost three in a row. They’re just not scoring enough goals, unlike their hosts today, who are conceding too many. I expect a lot of goals in this game but I think it’s time that Szombathelyi Haladas shone again by winning this game at 5/6.

Fylkir Reykjavik vs FH Hafnarfjordur – away win at 6/4. High-flying Fylkir Reykjavik host giants FH Hafnarfjordur in a game that arguably the hosts need to win more than the visitors. Reigning champions FH Hafnarfjordur are leading the Landsbankadeild Karla by five points currently and are starting to look settled again after a mid-season blip. When FH Hafnarfjordur are settled, other sides start to lose games against them – constantly! Fylkir Reykjavik are no exception to this ruling having lost this exact fixture for four seasons running now. Fylkir Reykjavik have only beaten FH Hafnarfjordur twice in their last ten attempts and both of those were away from home. In terms of form, there’s not much between these two sides but when you mention ability, FH Hafnarfjordur are the kings of Iceland and I thoroughly expect to see that shine through today as we make money on the outcome with superb odds of 6/4!

Sligo Rovers vs Shamrock Rovers – away win at 10/11. Just one point now seperates league leaders Bohemians and title challengers Shamrock Rovers. The visitors today have won their last three games in a row and are unbeaten in five domestic games. They’ve only lost three games all season and look intend on taking the title to the wire with Bohemians this season. Shamrock Rovers are the best away side in the division currently, having only lost once on the road this season and winning seven of their fourteen away games. Hosts Sligo Rovers may be unbeaten in three games but they’ve only won once in five games. Effectively, the hosts shouldn’t have enough to trouble the visitors today so the away win at 10/11 looks a good bet.

Sampdoria vs Internazionale – away win at 10/11. Despite a good start to the season, Sampdoria were brought crashing back down to earth by a rampant Fiorentina last match. Unfortunately for Sampdoria, they don’t exactly have the easiest of pick-me-up games as they’re hosting Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale. The visitors are unbeaten this season with four wins from five games and look set for yet another dominating season with the quality available at their disposal. There’s not too much between these two form-wise but ultimately, Internazionale have a better squad than Sampdoria on every front so the away win at 10/11 should be fairly routine.

Albinoleffe vs Crotone – home win at 5/6. They’ve taken a long time starting their Serie B season but Albinoleffe have finally won their first game of the season with a 2-1 victory over Mantova. The hosts are actually a good side but they’ve really hid it well so far with four straight defeats prior to the win. Albinoleffe will be looking to continue their mini run and they’ve picked a perfect game to do it in as they’re hosting newly-promoted Crotone, a side that still has no victories in Serie B this season, drawing four games and losing two. Their massive problem is goalscoring, something that is clearly indicated by the fact that they’ve only scored once all season. A resurgent Albinoleffe is a dangerous Albinoleffe and I fear Crotone might just get taught a lesson today. 5/6 on the home win for a good side that’s beginning to wake up looks a good bet to me!

Salernitana vs Ascoli - away win at 19/10. I’m not entirely sure why Ascoli are at 19/10 to win this game but perhaps that’s why I’m not a bookmaker. Not only did they win here last season, but they’ve not lost any game from six this season in Serie B and have won three of their last five games. They’re travelling to a Salernitana side that obtained their first point of the season away to Piacenza last match but still have no wins. They’ve scored just two goals all season, hence their problem, and let in eleven goals. It’s a considerable problem to not score goals but it’s even worse when you’ve conceded more goals than the rest of your division. For me, this has away win written all over it and can only imagine the bookies have made a slight error with this one! 19/10 on the away could be a bargain here.

Rio Ave vs Academica de Coimbra – home win at 5/6. Unbeaten after five games, Rio Ave have made a tremendous start to this campaign, one that I honestly didn’t think they were capable of. Their unbeaten status is largely due to their boring football as they’ve drawn three times and won twice by only scoring five goals and conceding two. Today they face an Academica de Coimbra side that boast a very similar record, only that they’ve lost three and drawn twice instead of actually bothering to win a game. I expect this game to be mind-numbingly boring and very low-scoring but think Rio Ave have the momentum behind them to give them a narrow victory here at 5/6.

Valencia vs Atletico Madrid – home win at 10/11. I was going to stay well clear of this game until I saw the head-to-head statistics. Why? Well, both of these sides are generally unreliable as hell when it comes to betting. Valencia managed to let a lead slip against the ten men of Sporting Gijon last weekend and lost to Getafe mid-week but have already beaten a very good Sevilla CF this season. Atletico Madrid have an even more puzzling set of results as they’ve already been demolished by Barcelona and Malaga, as well as having been held to a draw at home by lowly Almeria mid-week. There’s a lot of internal problems at the club at the moment and to make matters worse, they’ve lost Sergio Aguero through injury for a couple of weeks. Things have gone from bad to worse as Atletico Madrid are still yet to win a Primera Liga game this season and that doesn’t look likely to change as they’ve lost here at the Mestalla for four games running now. 10/11 looks to be a bargain on this one, particularly as Atletico Madrid’s defence is a real mess at the moment.

Cadiz vs Recreativo de Huelva - away win at 8/5. Newly-promoted Cadiz have found life in the Segunda Liga very tricky indeed with no wins in four games. They’ve only conceded three goals but the fact that they’ve only scored once in those four games speaks volumes. Visitors Recreativo de Huelva have won three from four games since being relegated from the Primera Liga and seem intent on returning there as swiftly as possible. Cadiz don’t have the ability nor the momentum to match a very much in-form Recreativo de Huelva tonight so I think the away win at 8/5 looks relatively straightforward.

Kalmar vs IFK Goteborg – away win at 9/5. Risky call? Sure, why not! Since the loss of the two Elms, Kalmar have really struggled in their games, which is something you’d expect from a decent side that have relied upon a couple of talented individuals for too long. Kalmar have now just won twice in five games and their Allsvenskan title challenge looks rocky to say the least. Visitors IFK Goteborg were in a similar position to what Kalmar are now but in July when they lost Pontus Wernblom, ironically. However, IFK Goteborg are well and truly back now with no defeats in five games, winning three of them and drawing twice.  Whereas that’s a good source of information, the other convincing factor was that IFK Goteborg have won three out of their last three Allsvenskan games here without any great difficulty. In fact, here’s a statistic for you – Kalmar haven’t taken any points off IFK Goteborg in their last five Allsvenskan games at either ground. How about that for a confidence booster?? So yeah, 9/5 suddenly looks quite tempting, doesn’t it?

St.Gallen vs Young Boys Bern – away win at 10/11. I don’t think I can ever thank the bookies enough for drastically underestimating just how good Young Boys Bern actually are – long may it last! You’d have thought that their persistent victories over their rivals and tremendous form would be enough to show how good they are but apparently not! They’ve now won eight Super League games from ten, losing just once along the way and averaging 2.3 goals per game currently. Today they face newly-promoted St.Gallen, who are unbeaten at home so far in the Super League, although I can’t help but feel that’s about to change! No wins in three games and two defeats along the way means that St.Gallen are currently on a slippery slope and it’s about to get a whole lot more slippy as they host the best side in Switzerland. Everything about this game points to the away win so I’m more than happy to take it at 10/11.

Real Madrid vs Deportivo La Coruna

Today’s previewed game is between Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna in what is the first competitive game of the season for either side. Real Madrid have made massive headlines over summer by signing big names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, and Karim Benzema, just to name a few. The money they’ve spent is ludicrous, as is the idea that this will resolve the issues that have plagued this club for the past seven/eight years. They’re brought in excellent players to replace very good players so I must commend them there. But still – where’s the youth in the squad to bring a bit of local passion to the game? Where’s the defence in this team? They’ve sold more defenders than they’ve bought this summer. Real Madrid could well prove to be a laughing stock this season unless they get off to a good start and there’s no better place for them to do that than at the Santiago Bernabeu. They’re hosting an organised Deportivo La Coruna today, a side who were in the limelight themselves not too many years ago. Times have changed since then but the Deportivo La Coruna side of today are no fools. Indeed, as lax as their defence can be, they’re very good at scoring goals. It’s hard to envision them not scoring today against a feeble Real Madrid defence, although it’s even harder to imagine that Real Madrid won’t score with the wealth of attacking ability available to them. For those reasons, taking both sides at 5/6 looks to be some of the best value found in this game. The other value I’ve located is going over 3.5 goals at 10/11, also for the above reasons. I can’t see this game being anything but a free-flowing, high-scoring game because both sides can attack all day long and can’t defend for shit – just like the atypical Spanish game, really! Whereas I do think we’ll witness a home win here today, I can’t see any value in it as I’m far from comfortable with the idea of a handicap on such an important opening day, particularly as it is the first competitive game of the season! 5/6 on both sides to score today though is an absolute bargain!

Saturday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Real Madrid vs Deportivo La Coruna – both sides to score, over 2.5 goals – see introduction for full details.

Kortrijk vs AA Gent - away win at 4/5. A good start to the season has seen AA Gent continue their impressive run over from last season to this one. They’re currently second in the Eerste Klasse with three wins and one draw from their opening four games. There’s not many sides they’ll be happier to have lined up against today than Kortrijk either as the hosts are without a win after four games and seem to be struggling just as much as last season. I’m not sure how they stayed in this division last year and I’m not quite sure if they’ll stay in it this year either! Lastly, AA Gent were one of the more impressive away sides last season, notching up one of many away wins at Kortrijk by a scoreline of 0-2. Quality of the squad and momentum points to an away win and I’m inclined to agree so an away win looks good value at 4/5.

Mechelen vs Sint-Truiden – home win at 5/6. Interestingly, both of these sides have got off to a flying start this season with each side occupying third and fourth place respectively. Both sides have won their last two games in a row so we should be in for quite an open game today, particularly as there’s not a great deal of quality difference between these two sides. Mechelen currently boast a 100% home record, however – two wins from two in total. Sint-Truiden are still trying to get used to life in the Eerste Klasse and I think today might be a lesson for them in that respect. Mechelen proved last year that whilst they’re not a great side, they’re a solid side and know how to make their ground a fortress, having lost less games at home last season than the majority of the division. For those reasons, a home win at 5/6 looks interesting.

Cibalia vs Varteks Varazdin – home win at 5/6. An impressive start to both sides’ campaigns leaves this tie looking closer than I believe it actually is. Cibalia are currently 5th in the Prva Liga with nine points from their opening five games. Their home record shows they’re setting up their stall just as they did last season by making themsevles incredibly difficult to play against on their own turf. Varteks Varazdin are currently unbeaten this season but much like their hosts today, they struggle to score goals. Given that Cibalia was one of the best home sides in the division last year and that they’re aiming to emulate it this year already (two home games played, two wins, no goals conceded), I have to fancy them to be the first side to beat Varteks Varazdin this season and 5/6 is a decent set of odds to see it happen at.

Enosis vs Apollon Limassol – away win at evens. Ah, I do love the easy previews! Despite this being the first game of the season for both sides, the gulf in class between these two sides is large so I’m feeling quite happy with Apollon Limassol being at evens to win this game! There’s not a lot else I can add to this, really!

AEL Limassol vs Doxa - home win at 5/6. This is another easy preview! Much like the preview above, AEL Limassol are simply a lot better than Doxa and thus should make light work of their opponents. Frankly, bookies showing generous odds of 5/6 on an AEL Limassol home win isn’t something that’s like to be repeated in the near future so take advantage of it whilst you can!

Manchester United vs Arsenal – home win at 11/10. Despite a relatively shaky start to the season, you can’t help but favour a Manchester United win here today. The hosts generally have the voodoo sign over Arsenal with four wins against Arsenal in their last six meetings at either ground. Manchester United haven’t conceded a goal at home to Arsenal in their last two meetings and generally have more options to win the game when push comes to shove. Arsenal have a lot of flair and neat passing but Manchester United generally tend to stop that and Arsenal are a side without a Plan “B” in a game of football because Arsene Wenger is a very stubborn manager! Manchester United will miss key defender Rio Ferdinand for this game, which could be exploited by a difficult Arsenal attack. That said, this game is being played at a ground which witnessed sixteen home wins from nineteen games last season in arguably the most difficult league in the world. Enough said? Lastly, there appears to have been some subtle mind-games from Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of this game, although not his usual tricks! The newspapers have reported a supposed bust-up between him and Brazilian midfielder Anderson, allegedly over a lack of first team football. The irony of this is that Anderson always plays in the games against Arsenal because he keeps Fabregas in his back pocket for the whole game, usually. I will not be surprised if he starts this game and assumes his usual commanding style in the centre of the park. All in all, a home win looks good value at 11/10.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Birmingham City – home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10. Tottenham Hotspur have finally found a good manager to utilise their large quantities of money and good footballers without firing him! Hurrah! They’re rapidly reaping the benefits thus far having won every competitive game they’ve played in any competition this season. Newly-promoted Birmingham City aren’t really in a position to prevent this because they’re not as good and don’t have the momentum away from home to cause problems. A home win at -1.75 handicap odds of 11/10 could be a real bargain today, particularly with England international striker Jermain Defoe in lethal form!

Doncaster Rovers vs Cardiff City – away win at 5/4. Although most Championship games today are “stay away” games, I do quite fancy this one. Doncaster Rovers set their stall out last season as being hard to beat at their own ground. However, a loss of players over the summer and a run of four games without a win has seen them slide alarmingly quickly towards the foot of the table. Welsh outfit Cardiff City, by contrast, have lost some key players over summer and gained from it on the pitch, somehow! There wins and one draw from four games shows they have the momentum to win this game and they’re certainly a better side so an away win at 5/4 could turn out to be a rather good bet!

Swansea City vs Watford – away win with draw no bet odds of 13/8. This is a very risky call, primarily because Watford are shit. However, mid-week antics in the League Cup means that Swansea City are missing at least five played through this game – three through suspension, two through injury – and Watford will no doubt take heart from that. Watford also put in a rather spirited display at Leeds United mid-week in the League Cup before eventually losing the game. However, against a depleted Swansea City, an away win could be on the cards. Given that Watford are shit, however, do take it at draw no bet odds of 13/8!

Colchester United vs Leeds United - away win at 5/4. Although both of these two sides are good, Colchester United are only just beginning to adapt as they lost their manager to Norwich City and Leeds United are in fine fettle, firing goals in on all fronts. The quality gap isn’t too large, although the visitors are the better outfit so an away win at 5/4 looks intriguing.

Tranmere Rovers vs Charlton Athletic - away win at 5/4. I don’t like John Barnes. Consequentially, I don’t like the team he manages – Tranmere Rovers. Needless to say that I’m pretty content that he’s doing as awful a job as expected. The hosts just can’t get to grips with themselves currently and three defeats from their opening four games says that things are going to get worse before they get better. Charlton Athletic have adapted to life in League One a lot better than I expected, currently sat atop the table with four wins from four games. They’ve got the quality and the momentum to overcome a demoralised and unorganised Tranmere Rovers so 5/4 on the away win looks a good bet!

Wycombe Wanderers vs Bristol Rovers - away win at 6/4. This bet is a little dubious but the atrocious form of Wycombe Wanderers has seduced me into having a flutter. The hosts have lost three of their four opening games, drawing the other. They’ve not made the kind of impact I imagined they would in League One and now find themselves hosting a side that are making a bigger impact than I thought they would – Bristol Rovers. The visitors are currently fourth in the table with three consecutive wins now. Whereas they’re not good enough to stay there, they are somewhat better than Wycombe Wanderers and all the above signs point to an away win so I do too! 6/4 on the away win looks good value, too!

Barnet vs Notts County - away win at 10/11. Moneybags Notts County take their emphatic form of late into this game against an in-form Barnet in the knowledge that they’ve overcome a big potential title rival last match (Dagenham & Redbridge) and have also clinched the signing of veteran defender Sol Campbell on a five-year deal. These two factors alone will have buoyed the Nottingham-based outfit, let alone their massive momentum at the moment and the quality available to them. Barnet just don’t have the quality to counter this relentless Notts County machine despite their good form thus far so an away win at 10/11 looks great value!

Dagenham & Redbridge vs Lincoln City – home win at 5/6. Despite a blatant beating being taken against Notts County in their last game, there’s no denying the quality of the players available to Dagenham & Redbridge, nor the fact that they’ve won three games from four this season and average scoring three goals per game currently. They’re hosting a poor Lincoln City side that are a little haphazard with their form currently but don’t have the quality to match Dagenham & Redbridge, especially not on the ground where Dagenham & Redbridge have a 100% home record thus far this season. A home win at 5/6 looks a banker today!

Boulogne vs Auxerre - home win at 7/5. Auxerre have made a dismal start to the season with three defeats from three games without even scoring a goal. This kind of form will buy them a guaranteed one-way ticket to Ligue 2 if they’re not careful. Whereas I don’t think Boulogne are necessarily that good, they are in a good vein of form with two wins from three games and I expect them to take advantage of a demoralised and out-of-sorts Auxerre side. Odds of 7/5 on the home win could be very profitable here.

Racing Club Lens vs Stade Rennais - away win at 9/5. This is a risky call but I’ve been very impressed with Stade Rennais’ football this season. They’ve been very unlucky in some games (i.e. against Olympique de Marseille) and it’s only a matter of time before that luck changes. Ismael Bangoura looks an extremely potent threat in attack and Gyan is always a handful. Despite Racing Club Lens having won their past two games consecutively, I’m going against the bookies to call an away win here for the better side to win the game against the run of form. 9/4 on an away win here could be very valuable today!

Olympique Lyonnais vs AS Nancy-Lorraine – home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10. After a short period of worry, I’m now on the road to believing Olympique Lyonnais are back to their brilliant best with new signing Lisandro Lopez absolutely on fire at the moment! If he continues his goalscoring form then Olympique Lyonnais won’t even remember who Karim Benzema is! The hosts are in scintillating form on all fronts and have a great deal of quality to attack AS Nancy-Lorraine with. Despit the visitors having started the season well, they shouldn’t be able to compete with a potent Olympique Lyonnais at Stade Gerland today so the -1.75 handicap at 11/10 looks very inviting!

Greuther Furth vs Arminia Bielefeld – home win at 5/4. After an unfortunate finish last season, Greuther Furth are back with a bang to yet again attempt to obtain promotion to Bundesliga, exactly where Arminia Bielefeld were last season. I say that Arminia Bielefeld were in the Bundesliga last season but you wouldn’t know it from the poor football they’re currently playing. They’ve claimed just one win from their opening three games and as today they face a Greuther Furth side that have now won two on the bounce. The omens are looking a little ominous for Arminia Bielefeld despite it still being early season so I’m going to ride the wave of momentum and call a home win at 5/4.

Crotone vs Brescia - away win at 11/8. I’m not entirely sure how Brescia didn’t manage to obtain promotion last season. They’ve got the quality and the support to do so. I guess you could simply say luck was against them, really! Either that or the Italian mafia! Regardless of this wittering from myself, they’re a much better side than newly-promoted Crotone and a win in their opening game should give them enough edge to win this game comfortably against weaker opposition. Odds of 11/8 on the away win look intriguing for those reasons.

Triestina vs Grosseto – home win at 5/6. Despite a good season last year, Grosseto have had some difficulties over summer and have lost a few players. They currenetly look like a mid-table finish would beyond please them. Triestina, by contrast, have strengthened their squad significantly over summer and look in a good position to win this game in light of the above information, particularly as Grosseto took a 3-0 battering at home to Torino in their opening game. For those reasons, 5/6 on a home win looks a good bet.

Vissel Kobe vs Urawa Red Diamonds – home win at 8/5. It’s the same drill as last week, guys and girls – Urawa Red Diamonds are on a downward spiral and it’s up to us to ride the wave until they pull themselves out of it! If their poor form wasn’t enough, they’re travelling to a massively in-form Vissel Kobe that have won three of their last four games, drawing the other. They also boast an impressive home record of six wins from eleven games, a better home record than the vast majority of the J-League. For those reaons, 8/5 on a home win looks a real bargain today!

Valerenga Oslo vs Molde – away win at evens. This season appears to be getting worse and worse for Valerenga Oslo every time I see them. Today’s fixture with Molde is unlikely to alleviate the mass of problems facing the hosts on all fronts so I’m all in favour of kicking Valerenga Oslo when they’re down, particularly when one of the most in-form sides in the Tippeligaen is on their doorstep waving an “evens” tag!! Molde are currently the second best side in the Tippeligaen when it comes to winning away from home and they have everything they need to increase that formidable record today. Frankly, evens is a real steal on this game – I was tempted to make it game of the day but it was just pipped to the post by Real Madrid vs Deportivo La Coruna.

Saturn Moscow Oblast vs Terek Grozny – home win at 5/4. Despite losing to FK Moscow last match, it’s very difficult to ignore the tremendous run of form that Saturn Moscow Oblast currently have in their arsenal. The hosts have three wins from their last five games and host a Terek Grozny side which suffered a surprise defeat at home to Spartak Nalchik last match. The visitors have now lost three times in fives games and their atrocious away form this season won’t have them entering this game with much confidence. Momentum and opportune moment are well and truly with Saturn Moscow Oblast so taking the home win at 5/4 looks a really good bet today!

Cukaricki vs Vojvodina Novi Sad – away win at 10/11. I’m not a massive advocate of Balkan away wins but a dismal Cukaricki are entertaining a very good Vojvodina Novi Sad tonight so it could be time for a change! The visitors have won both of their opening two games without even conceding a goal whereas the hosts are yet to claim so much as a point with two straight defeats so far this season. Vojvodina Novi Sad have won against Cukaricki three out of the last four times they’ve met, drawing the other occasion. All in all, an away win looks favourable, particularly at 11/10.

Senica vs Banska Bystrica - away win at 11/10. An impressive Banska Bystrica are today travelling to newly-promoted Senica in hope of maintaining a terrific run of form that sees them currently sitting atop the Corgon Liga, which is a somewhat unfamiliar position for them. However, seven games played with no defeat and four games won in a row says that Banska Bystrica have certainly earned their current league placing. The hosts Senica are a little hit-and-miss with form but generally don’t have the quality to repel an in-form Banska Bystrica so the away win looks very tempting here at 11/10.

Interblock Ljubljana vs Gorica – home win at 6/5. This clash in the Slovenian Prva Liga sees two out-of-sorts sides try to obtain a valuable three points in Ljubljana.  Both of these sides have had unsuccessful spells in the UEFA Europa League this season as both sides were knocked out without even scoring a goal over two legs. However, Gorica seem to be the worst for wear out of these two sides with three straight defeats now. Interblock Ljubljana are making a slow start to rediscovering the good form of last year but they’re starting to show it now as they’re unbeaten in their last two games, winning their last game away to Nafta Lendava. For those reasons, I think the hosts have just enough to see the home win occur here at 6/5.

Villarreal II vs Levante - away win at 13/8. Estbalished Segunda Liga side Levante travel to Villarreal II, the second team of Primera Liga outfit Villarreal, surprisingly! The visitors will no doubt be seeking to return to the Primera Liga after their year long absence and what better place to start it than by winning away to newly-promoted Villarreal II? The hosts are surely destined for as quick an exit from this division as Sevilla’s second team (Sevilla Atletico) were last year. I can’t see odds like this being available often so I’d recommend taking 13/8 on the away win whilst you still can!

Real Union de Irun vs Recreativo Huelva – away win at evens. I don’t  generally like betting on sides travelling to the Basque country but Real Union de Irun have been looking a little too weak for this division, much like fellow Basque outfit Eibar did last season. I suspect a similar fate may be in line for Real Union de Irun also, unfortunately. When coupling the above information with the fact that Recreativo Huelva are fresh from the Primera Liga and will no doubt be desperate to return there, an away win at evens suddenly looks very inviting indeed!

Zakarpattya Uzhhorod vs Arsenal Kiev - away win at 4/5. I just can’t see lowly Zakarpattya Uzhhorod lasting in this division. They don’t have the quality to stay in this league and it’s showing via their abysmal form of late, which has seen them lose no less than five games consecutively, which is actually all of their games in the Ukrainian Premier League since promotion. Whereas I accept that this run can’t last forever, I can’t help but feel confident it will last aganist a talented Arsenal Kiev side that are currently unbeaten and are proving a tough nut to crack for most sides. The visitors have done good things with their squad over summer and I thoroughly expect them to pile further misery upon the hosts and it’s potentially one of the bargains of the day at 4/5!
