Sporting Braga vs SL Benfica

Before I start today's post, I'd just like to show my appreciation and thank Victor and Kamila for their tireless work in assisting The Footy Tipster behind the scenes - your loyalty will not be forgotten nor overlooked!

Today's featured game is the Liga Sagres encounter between Sporting Braga and SL Benfica. Joint league leaders Sporting Braga have finally been brought back down to earth after having experienced the dizzying heights of seven straight wins. The culprit for this Sporting Braga experience was little Rio Ave, who held them to a 1-1 draw at home. It's going to be interesting to see how Sporting Braga react to this result because if I'm honest, I really don't rate their coach. I still think you'll see his true colours before too long but that's simply my opinion. Unfortunately for Sporting Braga, who have now had the wind knocked out of their sails, they're now hosting a side that has so much wind in their sails that they could run across the Atlantic Ocean purely on the bloody tailwind! Yes, you got it - SL Benfica! They're beating everyone and everything, usually by a large number of goals too. SL Benfica look to be justifying my pre-season call for them to end up as eventual winners of the Liga Sagres with seven wins from eight games, scoring an astonishing thirty goals, which works out at almost four goals per game on average! SL Benfica have long had a good side but it's been a long time since they played like a good side. However, finally appointing the correct man for the job has finally steered SL Benfica on the path to success once again. In fact, they're not a bad bet to lift the UEFA Europa League as long as they don't have too many hard away games - they really struggle in those games. Returning to this game, however - SL Benfica simply have absolutely everything going for them at the moment, particularly with Oscar Cardozo in such terrifying form. Sporting Braga's squad may be organised but SL Benfica should be able to tear through it today. Porto struggled at Sporting Braga this season and eventually lost to a very fortunate accidental goal. Even though they struggled, however, they still looked the better side, in my opinion. SL Benfica are in much better shape to face Sporting Braga today, however, and I thoroughly expect it to show. I can't see odds of 10/11 lasting on the away win here so I advise you to take the away win at the best odds you can find!

Saturday's Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Sporting Braga vs SL Benfica - away win at 10/11 - see introduction for full details.

Gimnasia De La Plata vs San Lorenzo de Almagro - away win at 7/5. Hosts Gimnasia De La Plata are currently heading back down to just how they started this campaign - three straight defeats. However, unfortunately for the hosts, I suspect that they're going to surpass that record as they're hosting a very good San Lorenzo de Almagro. The visitors have won four from their last five games and frankly look a menace for most sides that they face, if indeed not all of them. They've only been beaten once in five away games this season, winning twice and drawing twice. When you also bear in mind that Gimnasia De La Plata have lost more home games in this campaign than any other Primera Division side, you have to feel that all the signs are pointing to the away win at 7/5 so give it some thought!

KVSK United vs Lierse SK - away win at 11/10. With just one win in their past five games, I think it's fair to say that KVSK United are somewhat under-achieving of late, something that is reflected by their league positioning too. They've been performing better away from home than they have at home, especially as they've been struggling to score goals at home. Today they host the Tweede Klasse's most popular side - Lierse SK. The league leaders look every inch the pre-season promotion cadidates that they were expected to be. They've not lost any of their eleven games yet and have now won five games consecutively. Only recently-relegated Tubize have won more away games than Lierse SK this season so the game is looking rather daunting for KVSK United. Lastly, with today's visitors averaging nearly three goals per game, you really have to feel that all the factors support the away win here so taking Lierse SK at 11/10 could prove to be something of a bargain tonight.

Liege vs OH Leuven - away win at 6/4. This is a slightly dubious call as I don't think there's much quality difference between the two sides. However, there are a few overwhelming factors here that persuaded me to take the away win today. One is Liege's home form as they've lost four out of five home games already this season, drawing the other game and only having scored one goal in those five games. They're the joint-lowest goalscorers in the Tweede Klasse so they're going to have a job to overcome in-form OH Leuven tonight. The visitors are unbeaten in their last five games, winning three of those gamse and drawing the other two. They've also already won two away games this season, showing that they are a capable side when they wish to be. Lastly, having inflicted a first defeat of the season for high-flying Eupen in their last Tweede Klasse game, their momentum will be strong and they look to have enough in their favour to secure the away win at 6/4.

Minior Pernik vs Chernomorets Burgas - away win at 6/5. Although it's highly unlikely that Chernomorets Burgas will maintain their currently outstanding form and gain a European place next year, I'm still quite happy to ride the wave and bet against their opponents for as long as they maintain their unprecented onslaught on the A PFG. The only side remaining unbeaten in the A PFG, Chernomorets Burgas have won eight from their ten games thus far, scoring an average of two goals per game. They've only conceded one away goal all season and a run of four wins in five games leaves them with tremendous momentum to add to their good squad. Hosts Minior Pernik are...well, I don't can't really put this diplomatically but they're simply not a very good side. They've proven this year after year and would you believe it - this year doesn't appear to be any different! They've already lost three from their four home games so far this year, as well as having lost four of their last five games in general. Although they managed a win last match to obtain some momentum, they still don't have the actual quality to match Chernomorets Burgas today. For me, the away win shows significant value at 6/5.

Levski Sofia vs Lokomotiv Mezdra - lay Levski Sofia at 5/2. I attempted this bet last week but we were cruelly robbed by late Levski Sofia goal. However, today the troubled Levski Sofia host a more competent side that actually knows how it feels to win a game - Lokomotiv Mezdra. The visitors have actually won four of their last five games, which is astounding to me as I generally don't rate them very highly as a side. However, they have enough to get a result today as Levski Sofia are still in the disarray I've mentioned over the past couple of weeks so I think it looks worthwhile to lay the hosts at 5/2 today.

Cibalia vs Medimurje - home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10. After a highly-impressive draw at Dinamo Zagreb last time out, I can finally believe that Cibalia are playing well enough to avoid being titled as a "fluke". They're unbeaten in five games now and have a good home record of three wins and two draws from five games, conceding just two goals along the way. Cibalia were very much a home side but have now seemingly developed the ability to win away from home too, worryingly enough for all of their opponents! With an average of almost two goals per game, Cibalia are looking good to break the -1.75 goal handicap today against Medimurje from an attacking perspective. This call is furthered when we examine Medimurje's absymal away form of five losses from five games, an average of over three goals per game conceded, and just three goals scored. The visitors have also lost three of their last four games so in my eyes, the home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10 was something of a bargain today, a real contender for my previewed game of the day!

Rijeka vs Slaven Koprivnica - home win at 10/11. Hosts Rijeka look set to maintain their fortress as they host Slaven Koprivnica today. Although both sides are in good veins of form, visitors Slaven Koprivnica are particularly woeful away from home with three wins and two draws from their five away games, scoring just once over all of those games. They average conceding two goals per away game, which is a dangerous record to take to Rijeka for any side. The hosts have typically won four of their six home games and drawn the other two games, leaving them undefeated at home so far this season. The hosts have not only conceded just three goals in those six games but also average scoring nearly three goals per game at home. With all this in mind, you have to feel that the home win at 10/11 shows considerable value today.

Pribram vs Slavia Prague- away win at 4/5. Despite some good performances this season, Pribram now find themselves on the receiving end of three consecutive losses. Regardless of how averagely Slavia Prague have been playing in the Gambrinus Liga this year, the visitors are still not a side that you can afford to play against with no form behind you. Slavia Prague have only won two of their last five games, drawing once and losing twice. However, they do boast a better squad than Pribram, to be blunt, and I expect that to grant the visitors a narrow win today. History is also on our side as Pribram haven't even managed to score a goal against Slavia Prague in their last three meetings so the away win at 4/5 looks an interesting bet today.

Fulham vs Liverpool - home win with draw no bet odds of 7/4. Tenacious Fulham host an unimpressive Liverpool side at Craven Cottage today with a three-match unbeaten run to their name. The tricky hosts are entertaining a side that although managed to win against a despondant Manchester United last weekend, they still don't look a good side. Liverpool are always motivated for their "cup final" rivalries but it's sides like Fulham that they struggle against. With the additional knowledge that Steven Gerrard will not be playing in this game and the fact that Fulham managed to a claim an impressive 2-2 draw at Manchester City last match, you have to feel that the hosts have a good chance of doing what Sunderland did a couple of weeks ago (minus the beach ball, sadly!) and beat an average side that over-achieved last season. Liverpool have already lost three out of their five away games this season and I can't really see that changing today. Fulham impressed at home to Arsenal a few weeks back and were unlucky to lose the game. I don't think they'll make the same mistake this time around, however. Therefore, the home win with draw no bet odds of 7/4 looks a real bargain today.

Stoke City vs Wolverhampton Wanderers - home win at 5/6. Stoke City have only lost twice out of the five games they've played at home this season and those two games were against the two best sides in the Premier League - Manchester United and Chelsea. The other three games all resulted in home wins because Stoke City are a very good home side and are extremely well-organised. Today they host newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Britannia Stadium, a side that have already lost three out of five away games, winning just once. Wolverhampton Wanderers will most likely be one of the few sides that match the enthusiasm of Stoke City this season but they lack the quality, efficiency, and experience to truly match their fellow Midlands outfit. Unbeaten in their last three games now, Stoke City enter this game on the back of two consecutive wins. When you compare that to the fact that Wolverhampton Wanderers haven't tasted victory in their past four games now, losing twice and drawing twice, then you have to feel that the home win at 5/6 for a very strong home side looks very likely indeed.

West Bromwich Albion vs Watford - lay West Bromwich Albion at 5/4. With just one win in their past five games, it's fair to say that West Bromwich Albion are currently out of form. The main reason for that is that they're misfiring. Defending hasn't been a big part of their game under Roberto Di Matteo, which is surprising for an Italian. However, what was a big part of their game was goalscoring, something they've only managed to do in two of their last five games. They've struggled against lesser sides than Watford lately so hosting an in-form Watford could and probably should prove rather troublesome for them today. The visitors are unbeaten in their last three games and have only been beaten once on their travels all season. With six goals in their last three games, it's safe to say that Watford are scoring goals, unlike their hosts currently, which could prove fatal if the hosts don't rectify that today. Either way, I feel there's value in laying the hosts at 5/4 due to the above information.

Milton Keynes Dons vs Bristol Rovers - home win at 5/6. After a crushing 4-0 home defeat against Leeds United mid-week, Bristol Rovers have now truly reached the biggest downpoint of their campaign as they've now lost four consecutive games. Goalscoring has been their forté this season but if they're not doing that then they're conceding goals and not responding. With a complete lack of momentum and form in general, Bristol Rovers will be dreading the trip to a plucky and in-form Milton Keynes Dons, a side that has won three of their last four games. The hosts have already won four games from seven at home this season and given the momentum and motivation problems that Bristol Rovers are clearly encountering currently, it's hard to look beyond the home win at 5/6.

Stockport County vs Norwich City - away win at 10/11. Four wins in five games says that Norwich City have form. You only have to pick one of their recent games randomly to see just how well they're playing their football, something which has impressed me immensely considering their atrocious start to this campaign. Norwich City appear determined to re-enter the Championship next season and if their current form is anything to go by then I'm sure they'll be there too. Hosts Stockport County are coping with their financial issues as well as can be expected and their side are doing ok when you consider that fact. However, the fact remains that they've lost three of their last four games and have already been beaten four times in their seven home games so far this season. Nobody in League One has conceded more home goals than today's hosts and only bottom-placed Wycombe Wanderers have scored less home goals than Stockport County. With all of the above in mind, you have to feel that the away win at 10/11 looks like a good bet today.

Ancona vs Cesena - home win at 5/4. League leaders Ancona have won their last three games consecutively, taking their total to seven wins from eleven Serie B games so far this season. The hosts seem virtually unplayable at times, although this seems far more prevalent when they play at home as they've won all five of their home games so far this season, averaging over two goals per game. Ancona are the only side in Serie B that can still say that they've won ever home game and I expect them to be able to say it after this game too. Visitors Cesena have done well since promotion from Serie C and currently boast that they're the only side in Serie B yet to lose an away game as they've drawn four of their five away games played so far this season. Cesena are unbeaten in five games and generally enjoy frustraing their opponents rather than blowing them away. However, Ancona are a very potent and in-form side so although I'm a little surprised by odds of 10/11, I'm still more than happy to take them for the home win here today.

Jagiellonia Bialystok vs Polonia Warsaw - home win at 4/5. One of Poland's most prestigious home sides today hosts Polonia Warsaw in a bid to finally jump clear of the bottom of the Ekstraklasa. The hosts have won four from six home games so far this season and this looks likely to increase today as they host a demoralised Polonia Warsaw side that are missing key defender Jodlowiec and essential defensive comrade captain Mynar. For a side that have already lost four away games from six games, these two losses are very big indeed. Jagiellonia Bialystok may have a reputation of being one of the worst away sides in the Ekstraklasa but they also bear one of the best home records in the league too, currently. With no defeats in their past five games, you really have to fancy Jagiellonia Bialystok to overcome an out-of-sorts Polonia Warsaw today at 4/5 through momentum alone, let alone with their actual ability. Lastly, look at the Ekstaklasa table because it shows a record that few leagues/sides can boast these days for obvious reasons - bottom-placed Jagiellonia Bialystok have conceded less goals than anyone else in the Ekstaklasa excepting Legia Warsaw and Ruch Chorzow.

St.Mirren vs Hamilton Academicals - home win at 5/6. I don't normally venture into Scottish football but I feel I'm a winner with this one today. Hosts St.Mirren are unbeaten in their last three games, winnnig twice and drawing once. Momentum is stronger in the Scottish Premier League than most other factors because there's so little of it in this dog-eat-dog division. Visitors Hamilton Academicals have lost three of their four away games so far this season, drawing the other game. They've also only managed to score three goals in the process, conceding ten goals on the road so far, a worse record than anyone else in this division. With the additional information that visitors Hamilton Academicals have lost three of their last four games, you have to feel there's value in the home win at 5/6.

Real Madrid vs Getafe - away win at 6/1, lay Real Madrid at 7/4. Whichever of these two bets suit you, go for it! Why? Well, Real Madrid are nothing without Cristiano Ronaldo. He knows it, they know it, and now even fans know it. They've not scored in any of their last two competitive games and that looks less likely than normal to change today as they face bogey side Getafe. Real Madrid have only won once in their last three attempts to beat Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu, and that was the fortunate game last season which saw Pepe dismissed for his brutal assault. They've lost to Getafe twice in their last three meetings and haven't managed to beat their fellow Madrid rivals by more than a solitary goal since 2004. A misfiring Real Madrid will struggle aganst a plucky and determined Getafe today. I mean, hell, Real Madrid got battered 4-0 by lowly Segunda B outfit Alcorcon mid-week in the Copa del Rey and they fielded what can only be described as 80% of their first team. Real Madrid are utterly inept at defending in general but particularly when balls are played in behind their full backs. Frankly, I can't see the under-pressure hosts coming out and putting on a good display against bogey side Getafe today but I can see the opposite occurring. Therefore, I feel that laying Real Madrid at 7/4 looks a great bet today.

Osasuna vs Barcelona - both sides to score at 4/5. This bet is a bit of a no-brainer, really! There's only one game Osasuna haven't scored in this season out of the nine competitive games they've played and have also managed to score against Barcelona in their last two meetings too. I don't feel I need to explain why Barcelona will score in this game because they simply always do score. Therefore, taking both sides to score at 4/5 looks a great bet to me today!

Cordoba vs Huesca - home win at 21/20. Cordoba are very much the home side that they were last year as they've won three of their four home games played this season, drawing the other game. Although their recent form has dipped and left them winless in three games, the hosts still have everything they require to win this game at their fortress as their record clearly indicates. Visitors Huesca are enduring a poor season thus far just one win in nine games so far. They've not won in their last five games, drawing three times and losing twice. Although they're not the worst side in the division, Huesca will stil have a very difficult task to take points off a side that very few sides take points off when they're playing them away from home. Frankly, taking Cordoba to win this game at 21/20 may have its risk elements but it's still very much worthwhile in my eyes.

Empoli vs Ascoli

Today's featured game is the Italian Serie B match between Empoli and Ascoli. Hosts Empoli were amongst the pre-season favourites to achieve promotion to Serie A this season and have partially indicated why in their present campaign. Their away form is their biggest problem as they've failed to win in five away games, losing three times and scoring just one goal along the way. However, at home, Empoli look every bit a Serie A side in the making with four wins from four games. Nobody has scored more than them at home in Serie B and their average of nearly three goals per home game is a daunting statistic for any away side. Empoli carry a decent amount of momentum into this game as they're unbeaten in three games and they know that they've won this exact fixture for the last two seasons running now, each win by a goal margin of at least three goals. Visitors Ascoli aren't much of an away side despite their unbeaten start to this season on the road. They've currently played four away games, won once and drawn three times. Last season was a much better indication of Ascoli's actual ability on the road as just four teams lost more away games than they did and two of those sides ended up being relegated to Serie C! To put it bluntly; Ascoli aren't playing well per se - they're just making themselves hard to beat. I'll give credit where it's due but no wins in five games leaves Ascoli looking a little exposed and perhaps ready to taste their first away defeat of the season at the fortress that Empoli call Stadio Carlo Castellani. Had Ascoli not remained unbeaten on the road so far this season then I'd expect to see lower odds but as it happens, fortune appears to have favoured us by granting us odds of 4/5 so I thoroughly recommend taking them whilst they're worth it!

Saturday's Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Empoli vs Ascoli - home win at 4/5 - see introduction for full details.

Racing Club Avellaneda vs Lanus - away win at 7/5. Hosts Racing Club Avellaneda are enduring a torrid time in the Primera Division at the moment. Claiming a third-bottom place in the table, Racing Club Avellaneda have shown little desire to get out of that position as they've now lost four consecutive games and yet again are leaking too many goals and not scoring enough. Currently the only winless side in the Primera Division, Racing Club Avellaneda's fortunes don't look likely to improve as they host a rejuvenated Lanus with the visitors unbeaten in their last four games. My only concern for Lanus in this game is that they've only one won of their last four unbeaten games, which tells me they're not playing their games efficiently enough, although they're a good deal better than they were at the start of the season. Still, today looks as good a day as any to amend their record. We also have to bear in mind that Lanus are one of just four sides in the Primera Division that have yet to lose a game away from home, too. With all of the above in mind, it's difficult for me to look beyond the away win for Lanus at 7/5.

Neman Grodno vs Shakhtyor Soligorsk - away win at 3/4. Despite losing their last match at home to champions BATE Borisov, Shakhtyor Soligorsk still remain in the hunt for a European place in next season's competition. They're also back to the place where they do what they do best - away from home. It's hard to look beyond a Shakhtyor Soligorsk away win not only because you know they're the better side but also because only BATE Borisov have won more (or even matched) Shakhtyor Soligorsk this season. With six wins from eleven away games, accumulating just two defeats along the way, it becomes more than apparent how potent Shakhtyor Soligorsk actually are on the road. They've won two of their last three games and today travel to a woeful Neman Grodno that have lost five from their last six games and haven't won a game in their last eight. The hosts are short on morale and are hosting a better side, which immediately places the hosts in an awkward position. With all this in mind, the away win at 3/4 starts to look very promising indeed.

Deportes Tolima vs Deportivo Pereira - home win at 10/11. It's taken far too long for Deportes Tolima to awaken in this campaign but at last they've done so with zero defeats in their last six games and by winning their last two games consecutively. The hosts are aiming to secure their place in the last eight earlier rather than later and appear in good stead to do so. Visitors Deportivo Pereira have also been playing well lately and are also unbeaten in their last four games. That said, however, they're still winless on the road this season which indicates how much they struggle away from home. Against a rejuvenated and very much in-form Deportes Tolima, it's hard to see Deportivo Pereira taking anything off their superior opponents so the home win at 10/11 looks good value to me.

Istra 1961 vs Sibenik - away win at 6/4. Crazy odds! Newly-promoted Istra 1961 are now without a win in five games and have lost three of those games too. They've managed just two wins in eleven games and find goalscoring much harder than they do conceding goals. Sibenik might not be the best of away sides on a general level but you can be forgiven for being swayed by their current excellent away form. Why? Well, nobody has won as many games on the road this season as Sibenik, and that includes giants Dinamo Zagreb. Sibenik have won four times, drawn once, and lost one in their six away games this season. Their biggest strength is not conceding many goals, which is handy when you consider that they don't appear fond of goalscoring. However, three wins in four games indicates just how in-form Sibenik currently are and that really should be enough to see the away win occur here at 6/4.

Slovacko vs Kladno - home win at 10/11. After finally managing to end their winless drought last match, Slovacko enter this game brimming with confidence, particularly as they know that they can at least match Kladno on their day and will be eyeing up three points hungrily. Don't get me wrong, I'll be surprised if Slovacko stay in the Gambrinus Liga this year but I'll be even more surprised if it's not Kladno who are going down with them. The visitors were on an excellent run but a defeat and a draw in their last two games will have affected their confidence so their heads will have dropped, which ultimately leads to poorer performances. For me, although it should be a close call, the home win at 10/11 does indicate some value in the home win.

Teplice vs Mlada Boleslav - home win at evens. League leaders Teplice today entertain Mlada Boleslav with the knowledge that nobody has scored more Gambrinus Liga goals this season than Teplice and also the fact that they're unbeaten does much to impress. Having just conceded one goal at home so far this season, Teplice have managed to win three of their five home games, drawing the other two. Four wins in their last fives games gives Teplice all the momentum they need to win this game and it looks unlikely that an out-of-form Mlada Boleslav will contribute much in the way of opposition today. Why? Well, they've won just once in their last five games, losing twice and drawing twice. They've lost three from five away games so far this season and generally look prone to not turning up. For me, taking evens on the home win bears significant value in this game today!

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Aston Villa - away win at 11/10. After an impressive 2-1 win against Chelsea, Aston Villa enter this game with renewed vigour and purpose and face local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in a game that the away side know they need to win to maintain their momentum. There's no doubt that Aston Villa have the quality to do so, too, although their defensive mishaps need to cease as it won't be too long before errors start costing them a lot of points. Wolverhampton Wanderers have played some tenacious football this season but the fact remains that they've lost two of their last three games, drawing the other. The hosts simply don't score enough goals and against a free-flowing side like Aston Villa, this kind of record can prove fatal. For me, the away win at 11/1o has some good value in it today.

Derby County vs Queens Park Rangers - away win at 8/5. Queens Park Rangers have really caught my eye lately with three wins in their last five games. Only three sides in the Championship have scored more goals than Queens Park Rangers have so far this season as the visitors seek to finally prove that they're not just a rich club but also a talented club. Hosts Derby County get from bad to worse whenever I see them with two defeats in their last four games. The hosts are only playing well at home but I still think Queens Park Rangers simply have too much firepower and too many alternatives to not win this game so the away win at 8/5 looks good value to me.

Stade Rennais vs Montpellier HSC - home win at 4/5. Although having been poor lately, Stade Rennais will be looking to recapture some form today against high-flying Montpellier HSC. The hosts haven't won in three games, losing two games and drawing the other. That said, I still rate Stade Rennais' attack as one of the best in the country so it's only a matter of time before they nip it in the bud. Visitors Montpellier HSC are drastically over-achieving and although I respect them immensely for the tremendous form they currently boast, the fact remains that they're punching above their weight and I fully expect to see that indicated in tonight's game by a very strong Stade Rennais with a home win at 4/5.

Jaguares vs Santos Laguna - away win at 17/10. This one's a bit of a no-brainer for me, which leaves me stumped as to why the odds are so good but whatever! Visitors Santos Laguna are unbeaten in their last five games, winning four and drawing the other. They've played some great football of late and don't appear to miss Ecuadorian striker Christian Benitez one iota at the present time! Only Morelia have scored more goals than Santos Laguna in the Mexican Primera Division, which is largely why Santos Laguna are doing so well - efficient goalscoring. I rate hosts Jaguares amongst the worst sides in the Mexican Primera Division and their placing at the bottom of their group does much to further my point. Although they've won two of their last three games, there still appears to be a real quality mis-match in favour of the away side so taking a Santos Laguna win at 17/10 could prove to be a real bargain tonight.

GKS Belchatow vs Polonia Warsaw - home win at 5/6. Hosts GKS Belchatow are now unbeaten in five games, winning a highly impressive four games along the way. The hosts look to be getting back to their best form, something that I feel was produced a few seasons ago when GKS Belchatow were able to compete in the UEFA Cup. Three wins in five home games coupled with just one defeat shows that GKS Belchatow mean business so it's already more than apparent for a troubled Polonia Warsaw that they're going to have to work to get anything here. With recent trouble about unpaid player wages, Polonia Warsaw's last desire is to travel to a talented and in-form side, particularly as they boast the unenviable record of three defeats, one draw and just one win as their away record this season. To somehow make matters even worse for the visitors, they're still missing a whole host of players for this game - key defender Jodlowiec, captain Mynar (another defender), strikers Ivanovski and Nikolic, and four midfielders - Maka, Koziol, Piatek, and Sarvas. When you consider that GKS Belchatow are missing just Cetnarski for this game, you really have to favour a home win in this game for various reasons, although it is worth pointing out that Cetnarski is a key player for GKS Belchatow - I just don't feel it affects the scales too drastically with all of the above in mind. Therefore, a home win at 5/6 looks a real bargain today!

Pandurii Targu Jiu vs Unirea Urziceni - away win at 13/10. After the unflattering 4-1 away victory against Rangers in the UEFA Champions League, Unirea Urziceni return to their domestic campaign with renewed vigour and innovation. Their form lately has been patchy but they'll be keen to make amends and their momentum gives them all the requirements they need to beat a resilient but relatively average Pandurii Targu Jiu tonight. The hosts started this season well but are currently without a win in their last four games, drawing twice and losing twice. The home form of Pandurii Targu Jiu's is much like the away form of Unirea Urziceni - inconclusive! So today I'm going to side with momentum and call the away win at 13/10. I don't need to remind you all that this call does have an element of risk so do approach with caution!

Grasshoppers Zurich vs Young Boys Bern - away win at 17/20. The wonderful Young Boys Bern finally return to my radar after a couple of weeks off with the international break and Swiss Cup games. The impressive league leaders taken on fallen giants Grasshoppers Zurich away from home with the hosts on an impressive three-game unbeaten run which has seen them win twice and draw once. However, today they host a very good Young Boys Bern side indeed, something that's strongly indicated by the fact that the visitors have won ten from twelve games so far this season and average nearly three goals per game currently. Young Boys Bern have better players, are in better form, and enter this game with a lot of momentum so the away win at 17/20 looks something of a bargain today as there's a real quality mis-match on show.

Yverdon Sport vs Lugano - away win at 11/10. Five wins from five away games says that Lugano are more than determined to enter the Super League after only just missing out last year. The Challenge League leaders have won three from their last four games and can't remember what it feels like to taste defeat as it's been so long since it last occurred. With an average of over three goals per game, Lugano are the top goalscorers in the division and look a frightening opponent for any side in this division. Hosts Yverdon Sport have had a decent start to their season, particularly at home where they've won three from five games. However, two consecutive defeats will have done them damage mentally and that's no way to be entering a game with promotion favouries Lugano. For me, there's serious value in the away win at 11/10 today.

Porthmadog vs Aberyswyth Town - away win at 4/5. Hosts Porthmadog are the only side left in the Welsh Premier League that are yet to win a game. With eight games played and their last five having been lost consecutively, it's not hard to see just why they're bottom of the table without a win. They've managed to score a measly three goals in eight games, conceding over two per game on average. Everything that can go wrong is going wrong for them at the moment and I'd frankly be happy taking anyone to beat them at the moment. Visitors Aberystwyth Town have made a slow start but are finally gaining momentum with three wins in their last four games. They're currently sixth in the Premier League table and also currently boast the best away record in the division with three wins and one draw from their four away games. In fact, Aberystwyth Town are interestingly the only side left in their division yet to lose away from home. To say the visitors are in good form is an understatement as they look a potent threat to just about every side they face at the moment. For me, this is something of a no-brainer away win at 4/5.

Sporting Braga vs Porto

Today's featured game is in the Liga Sagres between Sporting Braga and Porto. Sporting Braga currently sit atop the Liga Sagres with four wins from their opening four games, including a win at Sporting Clube de Lisboa. I find this interesting becase I don't think Sporting Braga have played well enough to be where they are but nonetheless I give credit to them for some impressive results. I also find it interesting because I think they've got a much poorer coach now than the talented Jorge Jesus has moved on to SL Benfica in summer. Effectively, I think Sporting Braga are punching above their weight and are simply waiting to be knocked down. Enter reigning champions Porto! Much like their hosts, Porto are unbeaten in this campaign. However, unlike their hosts, they've shown reason as to why they're one of the top clubs in the Liga Sagres by scoring plenty of goals and conceding very few. Porto will be disappointed to have lost away to Chelsea despite having a few good chances of their own so will be looking to bounce back at Sporting Braga. Although I would classify Sporting Braga as a good side, I still wouldn't put them anywhere near Porto. The visitors have so much more class and finesse that the hosts simply shouldn't be able to compete. It's been that way in this fixture for two years running now; each time Porto has won the game. I think Sporting Braga are due a reality check and Porto look well-placed to be the side that gives them that kick! Frankly, the away win at 11/10 looks a real bargain!

Saturday's Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Sporting Braga vs Porto - away win at 11/10 - see introduction for full details.

Independiente vs Velez Sarsfeld - away win at 6/4. This is is a bit of a dubious call because Independiente are only ever good at home but Velez Sarsfeld's form of late has convinced me that they're more than capable of winning this game. Three wins and one draw from their last four league games and a mid-week victory over Boca Juniors in the Copa Nissan Sudamericana tells me that the visitors today have tremendous morale and momentum. Independiente generally make their home games count because they're atrocious away from home but this season it's been rather varied with two wins and two defeats, one of each at home and away from home. Their mixed form leaves me even more confident that a well-organised, efficient and solid Velez Sarsfeld will have no trouble dismantling the hosts tonight, particularly as the hosts find it hard to score goals currently at home and the visitors haven't conceded any on the road yet this season. It should be quite a tight game but an away win looks favourable at 6/4.

Independiente de Santa Fe Bogota vs Atletico Junior Barranquilla - home win at 11/10. Assuming that this game actually finishes (i.e. it's not interrupted by pitch invasions, riots, excessive red cards etc.) then I feel confident it'll be a home win. Four home wins from four games so far signals the intent of Independiente de Santa Fe Bogota. They're averaging at least three goals per game at home and look a frightening opponent at the present time. Atletico Junior Barranquilla are a good side and boast an even better home record than Independiente de Santa Fe Bogota but unfortunately own an extremely poor away record. In fact, today's visitors have lost three times and drawn once on the road this season, making them susceptible cannon fodder for an impressive Independiente de Santa Fe Bogota today. I can't put it more simply so I'll simply state that 11/10 on a home win here is an absolute steal!

Aston Villa vs Portsmouth - lay Aston Villa at 15/8. This is a very risky call but I'm going to ride it. Aston Villa simply haven't got going yet in any competition, something that has already seen them crash out of the Europa League to Austria's Rapid Vienna. They hustled and bustled their way to three points last match in a local rivalry match with Birmingham City without really deserving the victory. Despite their record showing three straight wins, including a very impressive (but fortunate) win away to Liverpool, I'm just not convinced. I think they've been fortunate to win all of these games and although you do need fortune to win games, it shouldn't be the focal point of your wins for the majority of the time, which it is. I also believe that Aston Villa don't perform well as the favourites to win a game. My reasoning behind that is because they're a very counter-attacking side with great pace but little ability to break down resilient defences currently. All that coupled with a supposed bust-up between manager Martin O'Neill and midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker recently (resulting in the player being left out of the squad today) tells me that Aston Villa might not have it all their own way today. Portsmouth have been playing better lately now the issues surrounding their ownership have been resolved. The chairman appears to have restored some clarity regarding Paul Hart's future at the club and the club have signed many new players just before the deadline to boost their chances of survival. They can count themselves highly unlucky to obtain nothing from the game at home to Bolton Wanderers are a spirited display and a touch of misfortune here and there, particularly with the conceding of a penalty. Portsmouth will be coming here with some belief from their last game and with even more determination to end their woeful run of form and they've got the players to cause problems in a shaky Aston Villa defence. Whereas I think this is far from a dead cert, I do think there's potential value in laying Aston Villa at 15/8.

Middlesbrough vs West Bromwich Albion - home win at 6/5. This was a tough call to make but one I agree with even in retrospect. Both of these sides are playing very good football and gaining very impressive results but there's only side between these two that are currently playing like a Premiership side would and that's Middlesbrough. The visitors today are conceding too many goals of late and are often falling behind before taking the lead. I simply don't believe that can happen today. If they fall behind against Middlesbrough then they'll be very lucky to get a draw from the game. Middlesbrough are barely conceding and look impressive every time I see them. In my opinion, they boast a better squad currently and have strengthened it with the acquisitions of Irishmen Sean St Ledger and Caleb Folan. This should be a close game and I really think both of these sides will be in the Premier League next year with their current form but current form also just favours Middlesbrough so I expect them to make the home advantage count and inflict West Bromwich Albion's first defeat of the season with inviting odds of 6/5.

Millwall vs Huddersfield Town - away win at 7/5. With no wins in four games, Millwall look to be at rock-bottom mentally and need to pick themselves up quickly if they're to have any chance of making themselves a force again. They've lost their last two games consecutively but they're not being battered. In fact, it's quite the reverse but they simply cannot score! Unfortunately for them, they're hosting a massively in-form Huddersfield Town that know exactly how to score as they've managed it seventeen times in seven games, which is nearly 2.5 goals per game, well above anyone else's goalscoring tally in the division. Three wins in their past five games and just one defeat says that Huddersfield Town have the form and ability to beat Millwall currently so the away win at 7/5 looks good to me.

Norwich City vs Charlton Athletic - away win at 6/4. Despite a surprising blip at home to Southampton, I fully expect Charlton Athletic to make light work of a mediocre Norwich City today. The hosts may have a new manager that is doing good work behind the scenes but their current form shows no wins in their past two games, including a poor draw at home to out-of-sorts Walsall. They suffered a mid-week defeat by high-flying Milton Keynes Dons despite having taken the lead and look destined for yet another tough clash today, this time with Charlton Athletic. Visitors Charlton Athletic will be keen to get back on track and I can't see them failing to do so today against a side that are nowhere near as good as they are and don't have any kind of momentum to oppose them. Therefore, the away win at 6/4 looks good to me.

Wycombe Wanderers vs Milton Keynes Dons - away win at 21/20. Visitors Milton Keynes Dons are unbeaten on the road this season from three games and have conceded just once in those three games. They've won four of their last five games and are currently in great shape to beat just about anyone! Happily for them, they're facing arguably the worst side in the division currently - Wycombe Wanderers. Newly-promoted Wycombe Wanderers are finding life in League One very tough indeed with just one win in their past five games and a virtually permanent place in the relegation zone. They're conceding far too many goals and this is something that will play into low-scoring Milton Keynes Dons' hands perfectly as they like their low-scoring victories in a very efficient manner. Basically, these two sides are polar opposites and I expect that to show by the final whistle today with an away win at 21/20.

Crewe Alexandra vs Aldershot Town - home win at 4/5. Crewe Alexandra are beginning to show that they really are a League One side playing in League Two after a shaky start. They've won three from their last five games albeit with very little style! Despite Aldershot Town's lofty perch, they're not nearly as good as Crewe Alexandra, which immediately sets the precedent as to why I think this game will be a home win. However, the most overwhelming fact that I can give you to support my call is the fact that Aldershot Town are really poor travellers. They've already lost two from their three away games this season and managed to lose more away games last season than any other side in the division. If you add the above information together, you have a home win at 4/5 without too much fuss and most likely a rather droll encounter!

Darlington vs Bournemouth - away win at 5/6. It's a shame to see a good side like Darlington playing so badly but football doesn't have much room for compassion, only success. The hosts haven't won any games out of seven attempts so far this season and that looks unlikely to change as they host high-flying Bournemouth. The visitors are currently top of the league and deservedly so after some very impressive displays and a form guide that shows six wins from seven games. Bournemouth are far from prolific but a woeful Darlington side that have scored just three goals in seven games shouldn't be able to test them on that front and draw more goals out from the south coast side. Bournemouth's main credential is that they rarely concede and given that the hosts can't score and momentum favours the visitors, an away win looks clear as daylight to me at 5/6.

Morecambe vs Notts County - away win at 5/6. I'm a little dubious with backing moneybags Notts County are some recently unnerving displays but I'm taking them today because the hosts are an extremely poor opponent. True, they've only lost two games from seven, but they're drawn five and won zero. Morecambe are coping well with the scoring goals side of things - it's just the "don't concede more goals than you've scored" side that they have to work on. Currently, Morecambe have conceded more goals in this division than anyone else and given that Notts County have scored more goals than anyone else in this campaign and also have a better squad, an away win looks relatively imminent at 5/6.

Grenoble Foot vs Stade Rennais - away win at evens. I think I'm becoming a secret fan of Stade Rennais but I genuinely do enjoy their football and I think you'll see a sharp rise from them from now on after they got a win under their belt last match. They're unbeaten so far this season and travel to Grenoble Foot, a side that knows all too well about defeat having lost all five of their games so far, scoring a miserly two goals in the process. They're showing clear relegation form and without major changes, I can't see them staying in Ligue 1 this year. Stade Rennais have the style and attacking potency to potentially do an awful lot of damage to little Grenoble Foot and I expect to see at least some of this damage today. Although today's visitors haven't won away from home in two attempts this season, you still have to sit back in amazement at the fact that the bookies have given evens on the away win here for a side that are clearly better due to the quality available to them and when considering the momentum of Stade Rennais also. This is one of the best bets today, in my opinion, and it only just missed out on being my featured game of the day!

SSC Napoli vs Udinese - over 2.5 goals at 4/5. There's no great secret here. Both of these two sides are expected to do well this year and typically neither of them currently are. However, that doesn't change the fact that both sides have a wealth of attacking options available to them with SSC Napoli having scored in every competitive game they've played so far and Udinese averaging over two goals per game currently. As you'd expect from both sides' league placing, the number of goals conceded by each side is large, some of the largest in Serie A, in fact. Both of these two sides need three points to try and build some momentum and both sides score and concede freely so taking over 2.5 goals at 4/5 looks a bargain.

Yokohama F Marinos vs Kashima Antlers - home win at 5/2. Out of all the leagues I cover, the J-League is the one that has the most baffling odds sometimes. Yokohama F Marinos are a big Japanese side with a big history. They're not doing particularly well this season but they're still a difficult side, particularly at home. Despite just one win in their past five games, Yokohama F Marinos are amongst the biggest goalscorers at home in the whole of the J-League. They've won two from their last three home games, drawing the other. Visitors Kashima Antlers are top of the league but their form is very hazy and doesn't really give them any consistency. As a matter of fact, Kashima Antlers have lost all three of their last three away games. All of this information combined suddenly makes the home win at 5/2 look very interesting indeed, does it not?

Ruch Chorzow vs Cracovia Krakow - home win at 10/11. Taking Ruch Chorzow to win at home at 10/11 could well be one of the best bets of the day. The hosts play good football and have an impressive 100% home record - three wins from three games, five goals scored and none conceded. Visitors Cracovia Krakow are finding Ekstraklasa life very hard and sit just outside the drop zone currently. Although Cracovia Krakow haven't lost in their last four games, the fact remains that they've scored just one away goal this season and that doesn't look likely to change against an impenetrable Ruch Chorzow defence, particularly with the hosts boasting four wins from their past five games. Everything is pointing to a home win here and I'm more than happy to take it with the above in mind at 10/11.

Saturn Moscow Oblast vs Spartak Moscow - away win at 10/11. Despite a couple of shaky displays against Rubin Kazan and Dinamo Moscow, Spartak Moscow are still a very good side that simply needs a win to get them back on track. A trip to local rivals Saturn Moscow Oblast should be a good hunting ground for them given that Saturn Moscow Oblast took a real beating off reigning champions Rubin Kazan last match, a result that will have really knocked the wind out of them. Although Saturn Moscow Oblast have a good home record, a large number of those games were against sides either not as good as them or on a par with them. Today they face a Spartak Moscow side that are better than them and I expect it to show today as I cannot fathom Valery Karpin allowing his side to go without a win for three games consecutively after such an impressive campaign with the title chase still wide open. I expect a rather open game today as the hosts are hunting a Europa League place but ultimately I think there's value in the away win at 11/10.

Rostov-na-Donu vs Kuban Krasnodor - home win at 4/5. I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that this will be the most boring game of the day. Neither of these two sides can score goals for shit so boring might not even be the word. However, Kuban Krasnodor boast the worst away record in the division with nine defeats from eleven games, drawing the other two. They average conceding over two goals per game away from home and average scoring each time there's a full moon! Rostov-na-Donu fair a little better than today's visitors. Although they don't score many at home (not even one per game on average!), nobody has conceded less goals than Rostov-na-Donu at home this season. Neither side has any consistency to speak of  but the above information on home and away form leaves me in little doubt that this will be anything but a home win at 4/5.

Lokomotiv Moscow vs FK Moscow - home win at evens. Yury Semin sure has got Lokomotiv Moscow doing damage like they used to some time ago! I don't know how he's done it, to be honest, but he's doing it very bloody well! In fact, he's done it well enough to be able to actually label Lokomotiv Moscow as title challengers, currently! They've won four of their last five games, drawing the other. They're a more prolific than efficient side, which is a trait that Semin brings to most (if not all) of the clubs he manages. They're the only side in the Russian Premier League to remain unbeaten at home in this campaign and are one of the biggest goalscorers at home, as well as boasting seven wins from eleven home games. Despite an impressive start to their season, FK Moscow are finally beginning to show that they're actually pretty average at best. It was only a matter of time before their bubble burst but now it has, they could have serious problems, particularly against a very potent Lokomotiv Moscow side. The visitors have won just once in their last five games, losing three times in the process. That kind of form won't keep them anywhere but on the road down the table whereas their hosts today are on their way up. There's a mismatch of quality, momentum and form here today so the home win looks a real steal at evens.

Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid - over 3.5 goals at evens. I don't think I need to explain this one, surely? Anyone who knows anything about football knows that these two sides go at it like hammer and tongs each time they meet! Defence ceases to exist and this is backed up by the fact that four out of the past five games between these two sides has resulted in over 3.5 goals. An in-form Barcelona are taking on a disrupted Atletico Madrid so the goals may be a little one-sided but I thoroughly expect success with this bet.

Cordoba vs Celta de Vigo - home win at 6/5. Despite fairly impassive form from both sides so far this season, Celta de Vigo suffered transfer-wise in summer, particularly with the loss of striker Kamel Ghilas to English Premier League side Hull City. The visitors haven't won a game yet this season and appear destined for a long haul this year. The hosts are in a similar position but have at least won a game this season, which was a home win, unsurpisingly. Why am I making a call on such a tight game then, you ask? Well, there's not too much between these two sides but one undeniable fact that has swayed me; Cordoba were one of the best home sides in the Segunda Liga last season and will seek to do the exact same this year. Celta de Vigo were one of the worst away sides last year and appear destined to be following the same pattern. It's all I have to go off but at 6/5, it's certainly worth a punt.

Rayo Vallecano de Madrid vs Real Union Club de Irun - home win at 3/4. Despite a mixed start to the campaign for Rayo Vallecano de Madrid, you have to fancy them to overcome newly-promoted Basque club Real Union Club de Irun. The visitors have only managed to score once in their first three games and could well be relegated this season if they don't start improving their performances and goalscoring tendancies. The hosts played well last year and still have a good squad. Is it good enough to take them to the Primera Liga? Possibly, but we'll see where they are at Christmas. In the meantime, they're playing a side with half the ability of them and on their own ground. In my eyes, 3/4 on a home win is a no-brainer.

Dnipro Dnepropetrovsk vs Karpaty Lviv - lay Dnipro Dnepropetrovsk at 13/10. This is a very risky call but I tend to find that bookies overrate Dnipro Dnepropetrovsk far too much when you consider how often they don't manage to win at home when the bookies expect them to. Don't get me wrong, they rarely lose at home, but they just don't win as often as they should, which is largely attributed to the fact that they don't like scoring goals. Today they host a Karpaty Lviv side that have impressed me this year with some good displays. They've got a good squad and taking on a Dnipro Dnepropetrovsk side that aren't firing on all cylinders yet so early in the season makes me think that the visitors might just be able to steal a result today, particularly as they've only been beaten once in their last five games. As I said, this is a risky call but I can see value in laying Dnipro Dnepropetrovsk at 13/10.
