Preston North End vs Barnsley
Today's featured game is the English Championship game between Preston North End and Barnsley. Hosts Preston North End are still in their "honeymoon period" with new manager Darren Ferguson and thus are playing with confidence at the moment. Visitors Barnsley are a good side but haven't been playing well of late so look a tad susceptible at the present time.
Preston have won five out of twelve home games this season. This record isn't especially flattering but you can tell that they're strong at home by the simple fact that they've only been beaten twice at Deepdale this season. They generally play good football but their problem this season has been scoring goals, something they've just not done enough of, particularly at home. Preston are one of the lowest conceding sides at home in the whole of the Championship so they're generally sound defensively which leads into the idea that it's really not going to take a lot to propel the northerners into play-off material. Preston have won their last two games consecutively and have kept two clean sheets in the process. They've beaten two very battling sides in their last two games so I'm impressed with Preston's resilience, something that will again be tested today. They've yet to face what I would call real opponents but frankly at the moment that doesn't interest me.
Boss Darren Ferguson moved swiftly to scure the loan signing of Manchester United's young prodigy Danny Welbeck. The youngster has shown glimpses of brilliance for Manchester United but has been criminally short of playing time and thus looks rusty on the field. However, he showed just what he can do by scoring on his debut for Preston as indicated below:
This kind of clinical finishing is what Preston need and if he can continue this trait then Preston can be considered as a very dangerous opponent. I'm very serious about the actual ability of Preston - it's only their management and/or fortune that has robbed them of their usual placing so far this season.
Visitors Barnsley are a tough side to beat. They're not a great side; they're simply hard-workers and have a good understanding, thus leading to a good level of efficiency. However, the form guide shows a lack of team spirit and confidence at the moment with four defeats and just one win in their last five games in all competitions. They've lost some poor games too - away to Coventry City, at home to Sheffield Wednesday - games they shouldn't be losing, basically. A defeat at Reading is marginally acceptable but nonetheless, Barnsley are looking susceptible at the moment. Barnsley have already lost six out of twelve away games and tend to struggle scoring on the road. Barnsley's biggest problem is conceding goals on the road, something they've done nearly twice per away game in the Championship. Barnsley have lost their last three away games consecutively in all competitions and generally don't have enough in their favour to take something from Deepdale tonight.
Ultimately, Preston are looking back to their best again. They're keeping clean sheets, they're fighting for every ball, and they're scoring goals. With this in mind and a strong home advantage, it's hard to see them not beating an out-of-form Barnsley side tonight.
Verdict: Preston North End to win at 10/11.
Tuesday's Picks
My tips:
As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
Arsenal de Sarandi vs Velez Sarsfeld - away win at 8/5.
The mere fact that Arsenal de Sarandi lost 3-0 away to Racing Club Avellaneda on the opening day of this campaign tells you that Arsenal are just as bad as they were in the previous campaign. Racing are a decent side but they're not good enough to do that to anyone else in this division currently so Arsenal are looking like cannon fodder yet again. They generally do quite well at home with just two defeats at home in all of the Clausura but they're simply not a good side, unfortunately for them. Although it's still early season and Arsenal have only played one game, not giving us much to go off, you still have to feel that they're looking susceptible at the moment.
Visitors Velez Sarsfeld are one of the best sides in Argentina at the moment and have been for some time. They play efficiently and are generally solid defensively, which are unusual traits for an Argentinian side but they work well, surprisingly. Although they drew 1-1 at home to a good but under-strength Colon de Santa Fe in their opening Apertura game, Velez remain a potent threat and a class above Arsenal de Sarandi ahead of this game so I fail to see why they can't win it. No side won more away games in the Apertura this year with five wins in ten games for Velez and no side conceded less goals so you have to feel that they're fair game to take three points on the road. Velez have won their last two meetings with Arsenal without conceding a goal but haven't won either of their last two trips to Arsenal, drawing both occasions, although it's worth mentioning that Velez threw a 3-0 goal lead away on their last visit to Arsenal so you get the impression that they are capable of beating Arsenal with a tad more composure.
Overall, there's a mis-match in quality between these two sides so I have to see the value in the away win at 8/5. Velez are an extremely capable side and I expect them to illustrate that tonight with the hope that early season nerves don't get the better of them.
Verdict: Velez Sarsfeld to win at 8/5.
Recommended bet - Chelsea, Celtic, Llanelli, and Preston North End at 5/1

SL Benfica vs Naval de Maio
Today's featured game is the Liga Sagres encounter between SL Benfica and Naval de Maio. Despite disappointingly (and somewhat strangely) losing to Sporting Braga last weekend, SL Benfica have bounced back with a mid-week victory in England against Everton in the UEFA Europa League. I can't see SL Benfica needing momentum to beat Naval de Maio either way but it's still useful to enter a game after you've won the previous game. I'm quite happy to write off the Sporting Braga defeat as "just one of those days" as SL Benfica were very unfortunate on the day with quite a number of things, almost too many things you might say, if you were of the suspicious type...which I am. Anyway, the firepower of SL Benfica is frankly worthy of a better league at the present time, such is its efficiency in destroying sides. I mean, the giants of Portuguese football have scored twenty goals at the Estadio de Luz so far this season, which is a terrifying average of five goals per game! They've won three from their four home games this season and have only conceded three goals on this crazy run! SL Benfica, to put it bluntly, are looking the best side in Portugal at the moment in my opinion, and I fully expect them to show this again tonight. Visitors Naval de Maio are actually doing well at the moment with three wins from their last four games. However, in that time they're not come across a side with the deadly attack of SL Benfica, although I have to give credit for their impressive win at Maritimo to start this particular run off. Naturally, the struggling Naval de Maio are largely taking points at home and this is perfectly illustrated by their away record, which reads played four, lost three, won one, scored twice (both in the same game), conceded eight. Effectively, they're atrocious on the road and currently average conceding two goals per game on the road, although I expect that margin to increase if SL Benfica turn it on tonight. I'm not normally a fan of the bigger handicaps like this but I feel this fixture has all that it needs to see SL Benfica win the game with a -2.75 goal handicap at 7/4.
Monday's Picks
My tips:
As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
SL Benfica vs Naval de Maio - home win with -2.75 handicap at 7/4 - see introduction for full details.
Huracan vs Arsenal de Sarandi - home win at 23/20. This match is between two sides that are really struggling in the Argentinian Primera Division. However, as I'm sure you're all aware, the sides in these predicaments tend to win their home games due to their poor away form, hence the predicament that they're generally in! Eat your heart out, Freud! Anyway, Huracan have managed to win two of their six home games this season already, drawing once and losing three times, which is a decent home record at best. However, more encouragingly Huracan haven't lost any of their last three home games. They've beaten Racing Club Avellaneda 3-1 a few weeks ago and have since drawn with River Plate and beaten Rosario Central without even conceding a goal. Huracan are certainly set in their ways at home and are starting to make it a fortress. Visitors Arsenal de Sarandi have performed quite well lately with two wins in their last three games. Needless to say, however, those wins were at home. Their away form shows they've lost their last three away games and have conceded eight goals on that run too. Arsenal de Sarandi's away form in general is poor with four defeats and one win from five away games this season with them averaging over two goals per away game conceded. Bluntly, this should be a real dogfight of a game but there's enough favouring Huracan here for me to take them at 23/20.
Slavia Prague vs Viktoria Plzen - lay Slavia Prague at evens. I find it quite baffling that Slavia Prague aren't hitting their stride yet but I'm here to take advantage of this fact so I'm going to attempt to do so here. Viktoria Plzen have been punching above their weight all season long but credit given where credit is due - they've only lost twice on the road in seven games and are unbeaten in their last five games now. The predominant reasoning behind this fact is that Viktoria Plzen rarely concede goals, something they've done only four times in their seven away games, which is less than any other Gambrinus Liga outfit. Hosts Slavia Prague are one of the daddies in this league but they're simply not showing it currently. I thought they'd be weakened after their losses this time around but I didn't expect them to be quite as weak as they have been. They've lost three of their last four games and only managed to score three times in those games. To say that Slavia Prague look out of sorts would be an understatement. Viktoria Plzen haven't taken a point from here since 2006 but they've got the best chance that they'll ever get to do that today so I'm laying Slavia Prague at evens.
Liverpool vs Birmingham City - under 2.5 goals at evens. I don't think I need to explain to you all the situation at Liverpool at the present time. They're not playing good football, they are missing leader Steven Gerrerad and Fernando Torres (who is doing his best to carry them) is playing through the pain barrier. A draw at Olympique Lyonnais last week will have damaged their morale as they're effectively out of the UEFA Champions League, barring a miracle. Their attention must now return to their league game with Birmingham City, who impressed at home to Manchester City in their last game but failed to score and gain a deserved victory. Birmingham City's story in the Premier League so far could very well be titled "Playing well; not scoring", which is effectively what I expect to happen again here tonight. I don't think Liverpool are great but they really should have enough to get a goal or two here whereas I can't see Birmingham City doing what they've only done four times away from home this season and scoring a goal. For me, taking under 2.5 goals at evens should be a good bet tonight.
AEK Athens vs Larissa - lay AEK Athens at 7/5. There's an awful lot going on behind the scenes at AEK Athens still and they're not producing the goods as a result of it. They've not won in their last five games in all competitions, games which have included a draw at home to Belarus' BATE Borisov in the UEFA Europa League and draws away to Aris Salonika and Ergotelis respectively in the Super League. The fact that they've won just three games out of nine this season speaks volumes regarding the club's current demise. Visitors Larissa are a capable side despite what their league placing may suggest. Larissa also enter this game with good momentum after a three-match unbeaten run that has seen them claim two victories and one draw. I personally consier Larissa as a top seven side that aren't too different from AEK Athens so I think backing Larissa to do what they did here two seasons ago by avoiding defeat at 7/5 could turn out to be a very good bet indeed tonight.
Basel vs Neuchatel Xamax - over 3.5 goals at 6/5. These two crazy Swiss sides have already scored sixty-seven goals between them in just fifteen games each, which is an average of over two goals scored per game for both side. Basel's form of late and overall ability suggests that they'll win this game but there's not a lot of value in that other than as accumulator fodder. However, the fact that they score nearly three goals per game at home on average and that Neuchatel Xamax score nearly two goals per game away from home appears to suggest that we're in for a heavy goalscoring session tonight. I'd be happier if Neuchatel Xamax were in better form to give them a better chance of scoring more goals but frankly I'm happy with this bet nonetheless. Lastly, games between these two sides have gone over 3.5 goals for four out of their last six encounters so taking over 3.5 goals at 6/5 here tonight could be an inspired bet!

Ancona vs Piacenza
Today's featured game is the Serie B encounter between Ancona and Piacenza. Having just managed to stay in Serie B last year, Ancona have set about making their home ground a fortress once more in an attempt to prolong their life in Serie B yet again. Only four Serie B sides won more home games than Ancona last year and two of those sides were promoted to Serie A! Ancona have also been working on winning away from home, which was their Achilles heel last season. This season, however, they've won two away games already, which is impressive when you consider that they only won three away games in the entirety of last season. Nobody lost more away games than Ancona last season so it was more than apparent that they needed to address it instantaneously - and they have. In this campaign, Ancona have actually been one of the more impressive sides thus far, winning six games in ten. They're unbeaten in their last four games and have won three of those games too. Ancona are one of just two sides in Serie B that have won every home game so far this season, along with Empoli. Ancona average over two goals per game and have conceded just once at home all season. To put it bluntly; Ancona have looked very good this year, almost a changed side from last year. Visitors Piacenza are having a torrid campaign thus far, however. They've won just two games from the ten they've competed in so far and have lost four in their last three games. Piacenza are without a win in their past five games now so morale is low and they're severely lacking in momentum. Although Piacenza's away form isn't amongst the worst in the league (played five, won one, drawn two, lost two), their recent form suggests that they're going to play right into in-form Ancona's hands, particularly as Piacenza are finding goals hard to come by themselves. To be frank, the odds of 5/6 on this game are something of a gift so I had to delve further and assitain just why those odds were available. The only reasoning I've managed to locate is that Ancona didn't manage to score against or even take a point off Piacenza last season. Whereas it's worth taking note of that statistic, I still feel everything points to a home win tonight so 5/6 on the home win is my undisputed pick of the day!
Tuesday's Picks
My tips:
As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
Ancona vs Piacenza - home win at 5/6 - see introduction for full details.
Barnsley vs Manchester United - lay Manchester United at 17/10. I don't like betting against my side but this game is competed in the shitty Carling Cup, a trophy that isn't widely sought after by...well, anyone, really! Manchester United will undoubtedly be fielding their impressive youngsters and a few first-team players needing match fitness i.e. Fletcher, Brown. Manchester United's kids are very talented, there's no doubt about that. However, this is a rather large test for them for various reasons. This trip is to Yorkshire on an Autumn night with the hosts boasting tenacious and rejuvenated football under former Manchester United striker Mark Robins. Robins has guided Barnsley to five vicories in all competitions since taking over in September, an impressive amount considering the prediacment the club were in when he took over. Within that list of victories lies wins against Burnley in this competition and West Bromwich Albion in the Championship, two very impressive results indeed. Barnsley are a very resilient side, as indeed are most Yorkshire outfits, and this game will not be easy for Manchester United's youngsters. Barnsley have a history of being a hard side to play against as Chelsea can testify after they exited the FA Cup against Barnsley last season, a game which like tonight's game was also played at Oakwell. Barnsley also won at Anfield 2-1 in the same competition and were only prevented from reaching the FA Cup final by a plucky Cardiff City. Suffice to say that Barnsley enjoy their cup games! Mark Robins will have a point to prove against his former club, as all former Manchester United players do, such is their desire to win trophies. I'm expecting a close and low-scoring game and although it could go either way, I think a draw is on the cards so laying Manchester United at 17/10 could prove to be good value tonight.
Strasbourg vs Tours - home win at evens. Now unbeaten in four games, Strasbourg are finally beginning to get their season back on track. They've only one won of those four games but their general performances are getting better too. I'd argue the case that there's not many other sides in Ligue 2 that are better to play against at home than Tours at the moment given that they've not won in four games and are generally poor travellers, something that has been proven over the past few years rather convincingly. Tours haven't won any of their five away games yet this season, to further my point, and generally struggle to score goals away from home. Strasbourg boast a better side; it's simply a matter of time as to when they start winning games consistently. For me, that time could be tonight against a Tours side that are unable to do anything but draw and lose currently. Although I expect a close game, there could well be some good value in the home win at evens.
Empoli vs Triestina - home win at 3/4. Unbeaten in four games now, Empoli are looking very promising ahead of this game with Triestina, particularly as Empoli have won five out of five home games so far this season. Empoli average scoring three goals per game at home and generally tend to blow any opponents away when playing at home. Although Triestina are unbeaten in their last two games, the fact remains that they've lost three from five away games and have only managed to score two goals away from home all season. If you're poor at goalscoring and you're going away to play against a side that have virtually mastered the art of goalscoring then you have to feel that a home win is looking very likely indeed. Empoli won this game 4-0 last season and I wouldn't be surprised to see that scoreline again, to be honest. Not only is 3/4 great odds on the home win but it may also be worth taking a -1.75 handicap in light of the above information.
Lecce vs Reggina - home win at 5/4. Although having started life in Serie B somewhat slowly, Lecce have since won four from their last five games. They've won three from five home games and although they're not scoring goals in a free-flowing manner, they're still looking ruthlessly efficient in their bid to regain their Serie A status. Although both of these two sides were in Serie A last season, only Lecce are looking likely to be back in it next season. Indeed, given Reggina's current problems, it looks more likely that they'll be in Serie C rather than Serie A if they indeed do leave Serie B. Reggina have lost three consecutive games now, which takes their tally of defeats to five from ten games. They've won just two games out of those ten and are looking woeful in front of goal with just seven goals scored along the way. Although there's not an awful lot of quality difference between these two sides, home advantage and momentum should be key here so I expect Lecce to win this game at surprising odds of 5/4.
Lastly, I don't often recommend combinations because generally it's up to yourselves to generate your own luck. However, I do really like the look of a 4-team Serie B accumulator of home wins containing Empoli, Ancona, Lecce, and Brescia at impressive odds of 11/1 - give it some thought!
