Just a bit of food for thought prior to today's featured game. I've been monitoring Lech Poznan in Poland somewhat lately and I've been extremely impressed with their winter break acquisitions, their overall ability, and their potency. They're looking strong whereas their title rivals are looking goal-shy and weak. Wisla Krakow are missing a finisher and Legia Warsaw don't score enough goals. There's still some twists to the Ekstraklasa season but I think the odds of 11/8 on Lech to win the league look very tempting indeed.
Anyway, today's featured game is the Premier League game between Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City. The two sides are similar in style with low-scoring wins and efficient football but I'm expecting the home advantage to play a big part tonight.
Blackburn Rovers have been strong at Ewood Park for some years now and this season is no exception. People seem to forget how good a home side that they are due to a poor start. However, eight wins in fifteen home games and just two defeats at home this season tells you that Blackburn are a bloody good home side. The growing reputation of centre-back Jones is boosting their confidence as young prodigies often do and Allardyce's tactics are working well as usual. Not many sides score here - in fact, just Chelsea and Wigan have scored here in Blackburn's last five games - with Blackburn conceding just twice in five home games. Blackburn always get at least a goal per home game so look capable of doing the business tonight, particularly off the back of a morale-boosting draw at home to title challengers Chelsea.
Birmingham City have been struggling of late due to losing their defensive strength. They've conceded six goals in three games, winning just once as a result. Birmingham are usually capable of scoring a goal but of late that's not been enough as a clinical Sunderland proved by smashing three past them at weekend. Birmingham's defence is their strongest point and without it they look rather average, to be honest. Birmingham have lost eight out of fifteen away games this season because they don't score enough goals and concede considerably more than they score! Logic thus dictates that away form isn't Birmingham's forté. Birmingham lost five out of their last seven away games and will have to work very hard to take anything from their trip to Blackburn tonight.
I expect a close and very physical game between two good sides. The first goal scored should really be the winner in what should be a low-scoring affair and I think the goalscorers will be Blackburn. They've played very well of late and Birmingham are conceding goals for fun at the moment. Birmingham need to be in better shape to score against a resolute Blackburn side, let alone take any points off them, so the home win looks a good bet tonight at very good odds.
Verdict: Blackburn Rovers to win at evens.
Wednesday's Picks
My tips:
As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
Sigma Olomouc vs Mlada Boleslav - home win at evens.
The press this week have linked Sigma Olomouc massively to match fixing so this game should show how much it's affected them. My personal viewpoint is that it will galvanise the team rather than split it up as Sigma Olomouc usually have good team spirit and play well at home so they'll no doubt like to cast off the shackles of the media and play their football on the field as opposed to talking about it. Sigma Olomouc average scoring two goals per home game, which is the biggest goalscoring record in the Gambrinus Liga at home. That gives them a chance of beating anyone and that's certainly applicable tonight against an out-of-form Mlada Boleslav. Sigma Olomouc have won both home games since returning from the winter break and have scored five goals whilst doing so so I expect Sigma Olomouc to turn up tonight.
Mlada Boleslav have gone straight out of the frying pan and into the fire lately. They've come back from the winter break still pissed, seemingly, with three consecutive defeats. The defeat against Sparta Prague is understandable; the defeats at home to Kladno and "away" to Bohemians 1905 are not acceptable at all. Mlada Boleslav are struggling to score goals with just one scored in three games so their problems are easy to see. As a result, morale is low so Mlada Boleslav are going to struggle against a very potent Sigma Olomouc tonight. Mlada Boleslav have already lost five out of nine away games this season and look set to lose another tonight with morale low and everything going against them.
The important factor for this game is the media. I'd advise watching this game for the first ten minutes or so to get a feel of how it's affected Sigma Olomouc before placing your bets. However, I expect them to react well to it and win the game but be cautious for obvious reasons.
Verdict: Sigma Olomouc to win at evens.
Genoa vs Palermo - home win at 21/20.
Serie A's biggest goalscoring home side Genoa tonight entertain high-flying Palermo in what could potentially be one of the matches of the season with Genoa consistently strong at home and Palermo playing exceptionally well at the moment.
Genoa have won ten out of fifteen home games in Serie A this season with an average of approximately 2.5 goals scored per home game. In terms of home form, no side has scored or conceded more goals than Genoa, which is a peculiar record for a good side but an accurate one nonetheless! Genoa have tremendous belief in themselves as they showed by coming from behind against Cagliari in their last home game to win an epic game 5-3. Genoa have scored eleven times in their last three home games so goalscoring definitely isn't one of their issues. However, seven goals conceded during those three games is a very poor record so Genoa do tend to provide good entertainment at least! Either way, a potent Genoa is always likely to win a game like this and tonight isn't an exception to me.
Visitors Palermo have been superb in recent weeks. However, the Sicily-based outfit do have one massive Achilles heel and that's their away form. With eight defeats in fourteen away games, Palermo look rather weak on the road. They've lost three out of their last four away games and have conceded eleven times during that run whilst scoring seven times so they look set to make this game with Genoa a cracker! Palermo are without a win in two consecutive games, however, so they're a tad short on momentum at the moment which should affect their display significantly against a constantly reliable Genoa side and it should be enough to see Palermo succumb to defeat tonight.
Palermo lost here last season and haven't scored against Genoa in their last two meetings. Whereas I expect Palermo to at least score tonight, I don't think they'll take any point as Genoa score too many goals and win too many games at home. Palermo will fight bravely and make it interesting, no doubt, but Genoa have more in their favour than Palermo and the odds are good enough to take the home win at.
Verdict: Genoa to win at 21/20.
Vojvodina Novi Sad vs Partizan Belgrade - away win at 4/5.
Vojvodina Novi Sad are the third best side in Serbia behind the two Belgrade giants. They're a fair way ahead of the remaining Serbian sides but are still some distance behind both Red Star and Partizan and it tends to show too. Nonetheless, Vojvodina remain a good home side as they've proven this season with five wins in nine home games, losing just twice along the way. They score an adequate amount whilst conceding very few goals so sides find it hard to take anything from this game in general. Despite Vojvodina winning both home games since returning from the winter break, they've been embarassed twice on the road by lowly Napredak and newly-promoted Smederevo so the hosts today are far from untouchable. At home they're a difficult side but their consistent defeats on the road hasn't helped their momentum one bit and they need all the help they can get against a frankly superior Partizan Belgrade side.
Partizan Belgrade have been slow in getting going this season but are now back in the saddle with five wins in nine away games. Partizan are the only side in the Super Liga yet to lose an away game this season and are one of the biggest goalscoring sides on the road. Partizan haven't lost on this trip for four consecutive seasons now, winning twice and drawing twice. Vojvodina find it hard enough to score against the giants, let alone beat them, and I'm anticipating a similar predicament today for the hosts. Partizan have looked good since returning from the winter break with three wins in four games, particularly as they haven't conceded a single goal in any of those games. Partizan won a very difficult away game against Borac Cacak with considerable ease as well as overcoming experience Super Liga outfit Hajduk Kula 2-0 on the road so Partizan are firing on all cylinders at the moment. They occasionally look short on goals but I don't expect that to be a problem today given their excellent form of late so the visitors look good for the points today.
I think the bookies have sized up this game rather well, unfortunately. I was hoping for odds something like evens or 11/10 on Partizan for this game but I'll take them at 4/5 as they're more than good enough to do the business today.
Verdict: Partizan Belgrade to win at 4/5.
Hajduk Kula vs Spartak Subotica - away win at 2/1.
Well, these odds are stupid. I'm not dumb enough to think that newly-promoted Spartak Subotica will walk this game but I will give them their chances here because the odds on Hajduk Kula are way too short, although not short enough to lay them, unfortunately!
Hajduk Kula may have only lost four home games out of nine this season but they're a poor goalscoring side and rarely look a threat to opposing sides. That's the predominant reason that they're battling against relegation this season, really! Hajduk Kula have started the latter part of their Super Liga campaign dismally with four consecutive defeats, conceding ten times and scoring just twice, which is an atrocious record. They've not even managed to score in any of their last three games and look bereft of morale so should struggle an awful lot at home today.
Spartak Subotica continue to defy all odds by launching what is rapidly becoming a legitimate challenge for a European spot next season! You can't fault them either as they've won five out of nine away games this season - the same number as Partizan Belgrade! - and boast one of the better defensive records in the division whilst doing so. They've been superb since returning from their winter break with three wins and one draw in four games, a run which has included two difficult away games against Borac Cacak and OFK Belgrade so I'll give Spartak Subotica the credit that they've definitely earned. They're not as potent as I'd like but they've scored in three of their last four games so should be able to do so today.
Ultimately, a demoralised and goal-shy Hajduk Kula look prime candidates for Spartak Subotica to beat and extend their good run as well as their excellent season and I think 2/1 is too good a price to miss out on, frankly!
Verdict: Spartak Subotica to win at 2/1.
Basel vs FC Zurich - lay Basel at 11/10.
I can't quite understand why Basel are 8/13 to beat a side that they've only beaten here once in their last three Super League meetings, thus Basel look too short to me.
Basel are playing well but they've been conceding far too many goals of late with four goals conceded in their last three games. Basel were stunned by in-form Grasshoppers Zurich when Grasshoppers won 2-1 at Basel a couple of games again and I'm expecting something of a similar vein tonight. There's no doubt in my mind that Basel are one of the biggest and best sides in Switzerland but FC Zurich really aren't very far behind at all. They've had a poor campaign but the winter break has done them good and now FC Zurich look rejuvenated with three consecutive wins. FC Zurich do well in the Super League because they're generally hard to beat, a trait they lost during their demoralised part of the season. However, they look back in business now and whilst I don't believe they're performing as well as they're capable of playing, I do think that they're capable of causing problems for a leaky Basel side currently and the odds are certainly worthwhile to lay Basel as they take on a side that can match them on their day.
Verdict: Lay Basel at 11/10.

Today's featured game is the Liga Sagres encounter between Sporting Braga and SL Benfica. Joint league leaders Sporting Braga have finally been brought back down to earth after having experienced the dizzying heights of seven straight wins. The culprit for this Sporting Braga experience was little Rio Ave, who held them to a 1-1 draw at home. It's going to be interesting to see how Sporting Braga react to this result because if I'm honest, I really don't rate their coach. I still think you'll see his true colours before too long but that's simply my opinion. Unfortunately for Sporting Braga, who have now had the wind knocked out of their sails, they're now hosting a side that has so much wind in their sails that they could run across the Atlantic Ocean purely on the bloody tailwind! Yes, you got it - SL Benfica! They're beating everyone and everything, usually by a large number of goals too. SL Benfica look to be justifying my pre-season call for them to end up as eventual winners of the Liga Sagres with seven wins from eight games, scoring an astonishing thirty goals, which works out at almost four goals per game on average! SL Benfica have long had a good side but it's been a long time since they played like a good side. However, finally appointing the correct man for the job has finally steered SL Benfica on the path to success once again. In fact, they're not a bad bet to lift the UEFA Europa League as long as they don't have too many hard away games - they really struggle in those games. Returning to this game, however - SL Benfica simply have absolutely everything going for them at the moment, particularly with Oscar Cardozo in such terrifying form. Sporting Braga's squad may be organised but SL Benfica should be able to tear through it today. Porto struggled at Sporting Braga this season and eventually lost to a very fortunate accidental goal. Even though they struggled, however, they still looked the better side, in my opinion. SL Benfica are in much better shape to face Sporting Braga today, however, and I thoroughly expect it to show. I can't see odds of 10/11 lasting on the away win here so I advise you to take the away win at the best odds you can find!
Saturday's Picks
My tips:
As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
Sporting Braga vs SL Benfica - away win at 10/11 - see introduction for full details.
Gimnasia De La Plata vs San Lorenzo de Almagro - away win at 7/5. Hosts Gimnasia De La Plata are currently heading back down to just how they started this campaign - three straight defeats. However, unfortunately for the hosts, I suspect that they're going to surpass that record as they're hosting a very good San Lorenzo de Almagro. The visitors have won four from their last five games and frankly look a menace for most sides that they face, if indeed not all of them. They've only been beaten once in five away games this season, winning twice and drawing twice. When you also bear in mind that Gimnasia De La Plata have lost more home games in this campaign than any other Primera Division side, you have to feel that all the signs are pointing to the away win at 7/5 so give it some thought!
KVSK United vs Lierse SK - away win at 11/10. With just one win in their past five games, I think it's fair to say that KVSK United are somewhat under-achieving of late, something that is reflected by their league positioning too. They've been performing better away from home than they have at home, especially as they've been struggling to score goals at home. Today they host the Tweede Klasse's most popular side - Lierse SK. The league leaders look every inch the pre-season promotion cadidates that they were expected to be. They've not lost any of their eleven games yet and have now won five games consecutively. Only recently-relegated Tubize have won more away games than Lierse SK this season so the game is looking rather daunting for KVSK United. Lastly, with today's visitors averaging nearly three goals per game, you really have to feel that all the factors support the away win here so taking Lierse SK at 11/10 could prove to be something of a bargain tonight.
Liege vs OH Leuven - away win at 6/4. This is a slightly dubious call as I don't think there's much quality difference between the two sides. However, there are a few overwhelming factors here that persuaded me to take the away win today. One is Liege's home form as they've lost four out of five home games already this season, drawing the other game and only having scored one goal in those five games. They're the joint-lowest goalscorers in the Tweede Klasse so they're going to have a job to overcome in-form OH Leuven tonight. The visitors are unbeaten in their last five games, winning three of those gamse and drawing the other two. They've also already won two away games this season, showing that they are a capable side when they wish to be. Lastly, having inflicted a first defeat of the season for high-flying Eupen in their last Tweede Klasse game, their momentum will be strong and they look to have enough in their favour to secure the away win at 6/4.
Minior Pernik vs Chernomorets Burgas - away win at 6/5. Although it's highly unlikely that Chernomorets Burgas will maintain their currently outstanding form and gain a European place next year, I'm still quite happy to ride the wave and bet against their opponents for as long as they maintain their unprecented onslaught on the A PFG. The only side remaining unbeaten in the A PFG, Chernomorets Burgas have won eight from their ten games thus far, scoring an average of two goals per game. They've only conceded one away goal all season and a run of four wins in five games leaves them with tremendous momentum to add to their good squad. Hosts Minior Pernik are...well, I don't can't really put this diplomatically but they're simply not a very good side. They've proven this year after year and would you believe it - this year doesn't appear to be any different! They've already lost three from their four home games so far this year, as well as having lost four of their last five games in general. Although they managed a win last match to obtain some momentum, they still don't have the actual quality to match Chernomorets Burgas today. For me, the away win shows significant value at 6/5.
Levski Sofia vs Lokomotiv Mezdra - lay Levski Sofia at 5/2. I attempted this bet last week but we were cruelly robbed by late Levski Sofia goal. However, today the troubled Levski Sofia host a more competent side that actually knows how it feels to win a game - Lokomotiv Mezdra. The visitors have actually won four of their last five games, which is astounding to me as I generally don't rate them very highly as a side. However, they have enough to get a result today as Levski Sofia are still in the disarray I've mentioned over the past couple of weeks so I think it looks worthwhile to lay the hosts at 5/2 today.
Cibalia vs Medimurje - home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10. After a highly-impressive draw at Dinamo Zagreb last time out, I can finally believe that Cibalia are playing well enough to avoid being titled as a "fluke". They're unbeaten in five games now and have a good home record of three wins and two draws from five games, conceding just two goals along the way. Cibalia were very much a home side but have now seemingly developed the ability to win away from home too, worryingly enough for all of their opponents! With an average of almost two goals per game, Cibalia are looking good to break the -1.75 goal handicap today against Medimurje from an attacking perspective. This call is furthered when we examine Medimurje's absymal away form of five losses from five games, an average of over three goals per game conceded, and just three goals scored. The visitors have also lost three of their last four games so in my eyes, the home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10 was something of a bargain today, a real contender for my previewed game of the day!
Rijeka vs Slaven Koprivnica - home win at 10/11. Hosts Rijeka look set to maintain their fortress as they host Slaven Koprivnica today. Although both sides are in good veins of form, visitors Slaven Koprivnica are particularly woeful away from home with three wins and two draws from their five away games, scoring just once over all of those games. They average conceding two goals per away game, which is a dangerous record to take to Rijeka for any side. The hosts have typically won four of their six home games and drawn the other two games, leaving them undefeated at home so far this season. The hosts have not only conceded just three goals in those six games but also average scoring nearly three goals per game at home. With all this in mind, you have to feel that the home win at 10/11 shows considerable value today.
Pribram vs Slavia Prague- away win at 4/5. Despite some good performances this season, Pribram now find themselves on the receiving end of three consecutive losses. Regardless of how averagely Slavia Prague have been playing in the Gambrinus Liga this year, the visitors are still not a side that you can afford to play against with no form behind you. Slavia Prague have only won two of their last five games, drawing once and losing twice. However, they do boast a better squad than Pribram, to be blunt, and I expect that to grant the visitors a narrow win today. History is also on our side as Pribram haven't even managed to score a goal against Slavia Prague in their last three meetings so the away win at 4/5 looks an interesting bet today.
Fulham vs Liverpool - home win with draw no bet odds of 7/4. Tenacious Fulham host an unimpressive Liverpool side at Craven Cottage today with a three-match unbeaten run to their name. The tricky hosts are entertaining a side that although managed to win against a despondant Manchester United last weekend, they still don't look a good side. Liverpool are always motivated for their "cup final" rivalries but it's sides like Fulham that they struggle against. With the additional knowledge that Steven Gerrard will not be playing in this game and the fact that Fulham managed to a claim an impressive 2-2 draw at Manchester City last match, you have to feel that the hosts have a good chance of doing what Sunderland did a couple of weeks ago (minus the beach ball, sadly!) and beat an average side that over-achieved last season. Liverpool have already lost three out of their five away games this season and I can't really see that changing today. Fulham impressed at home to Arsenal a few weeks back and were unlucky to lose the game. I don't think they'll make the same mistake this time around, however. Therefore, the home win with draw no bet odds of 7/4 looks a real bargain today.
Stoke City vs Wolverhampton Wanderers - home win at 5/6. Stoke City have only lost twice out of the five games they've played at home this season and those two games were against the two best sides in the Premier League - Manchester United and Chelsea. The other three games all resulted in home wins because Stoke City are a very good home side and are extremely well-organised. Today they host newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers to the Britannia Stadium, a side that have already lost three out of five away games, winning just once. Wolverhampton Wanderers will most likely be one of the few sides that match the enthusiasm of Stoke City this season but they lack the quality, efficiency, and experience to truly match their fellow Midlands outfit. Unbeaten in their last three games now, Stoke City enter this game on the back of two consecutive wins. When you compare that to the fact that Wolverhampton Wanderers haven't tasted victory in their past four games now, losing twice and drawing twice, then you have to feel that the home win at 5/6 for a very strong home side looks very likely indeed.
West Bromwich Albion vs Watford - lay West Bromwich Albion at 5/4. With just one win in their past five games, it's fair to say that West Bromwich Albion are currently out of form. The main reason for that is that they're misfiring. Defending hasn't been a big part of their game under Roberto Di Matteo, which is surprising for an Italian. However, what was a big part of their game was goalscoring, something they've only managed to do in two of their last five games. They've struggled against lesser sides than Watford lately so hosting an in-form Watford could and probably should prove rather troublesome for them today. The visitors are unbeaten in their last three games and have only been beaten once on their travels all season. With six goals in their last three games, it's safe to say that Watford are scoring goals, unlike their hosts currently, which could prove fatal if the hosts don't rectify that today. Either way, I feel there's value in laying the hosts at 5/4 due to the above information.
Milton Keynes Dons vs Bristol Rovers - home win at 5/6. After a crushing 4-0 home defeat against Leeds United mid-week, Bristol Rovers have now truly reached the biggest downpoint of their campaign as they've now lost four consecutive games. Goalscoring has been their forté this season but if they're not doing that then they're conceding goals and not responding. With a complete lack of momentum and form in general, Bristol Rovers will be dreading the trip to a plucky and in-form Milton Keynes Dons, a side that has won three of their last four games. The hosts have already won four games from seven at home this season and given the momentum and motivation problems that Bristol Rovers are clearly encountering currently, it's hard to look beyond the home win at 5/6.
Stockport County vs Norwich City - away win at 10/11. Four wins in five games says that Norwich City have form. You only have to pick one of their recent games randomly to see just how well they're playing their football, something which has impressed me immensely considering their atrocious start to this campaign. Norwich City appear determined to re-enter the Championship next season and if their current form is anything to go by then I'm sure they'll be there too. Hosts Stockport County are coping with their financial issues as well as can be expected and their side are doing ok when you consider that fact. However, the fact remains that they've lost three of their last four games and have already been beaten four times in their seven home games so far this season. Nobody in League One has conceded more home goals than today's hosts and only bottom-placed Wycombe Wanderers have scored less home goals than Stockport County. With all of the above in mind, you have to feel that the away win at 10/11 looks like a good bet today.
Ancona vs Cesena - home win at 5/4. League leaders Ancona have won their last three games consecutively, taking their total to seven wins from eleven Serie B games so far this season. The hosts seem virtually unplayable at times, although this seems far more prevalent when they play at home as they've won all five of their home games so far this season, averaging over two goals per game. Ancona are the only side in Serie B that can still say that they've won ever home game and I expect them to be able to say it after this game too. Visitors Cesena have done well since promotion from Serie C and currently boast that they're the only side in Serie B yet to lose an away game as they've drawn four of their five away games played so far this season. Cesena are unbeaten in five games and generally enjoy frustraing their opponents rather than blowing them away. However, Ancona are a very potent and in-form side so although I'm a little surprised by odds of 10/11, I'm still more than happy to take them for the home win here today.
Jagiellonia Bialystok vs Polonia Warsaw - home win at 4/5. One of Poland's most prestigious home sides today hosts Polonia Warsaw in a bid to finally jump clear of the bottom of the Ekstraklasa. The hosts have won four from six home games so far this season and this looks likely to increase today as they host a demoralised Polonia Warsaw side that are missing key defender Jodlowiec and essential defensive comrade captain Mynar. For a side that have already lost four away games from six games, these two losses are very big indeed. Jagiellonia Bialystok may have a reputation of being one of the worst away sides in the Ekstraklasa but they also bear one of the best home records in the league too, currently. With no defeats in their past five games, you really have to fancy Jagiellonia Bialystok to overcome an out-of-sorts Polonia Warsaw today at 4/5 through momentum alone, let alone with their actual ability. Lastly, look at the Ekstaklasa table because it shows a record that few leagues/sides can boast these days for obvious reasons - bottom-placed Jagiellonia Bialystok have conceded less goals than anyone else in the Ekstaklasa excepting Legia Warsaw and Ruch Chorzow.
St.Mirren vs Hamilton Academicals - home win at 5/6. I don't normally venture into Scottish football but I feel I'm a winner with this one today. Hosts St.Mirren are unbeaten in their last three games, winnnig twice and drawing once. Momentum is stronger in the Scottish Premier League than most other factors because there's so little of it in this dog-eat-dog division. Visitors Hamilton Academicals have lost three of their four away games so far this season, drawing the other game. They've also only managed to score three goals in the process, conceding ten goals on the road so far, a worse record than anyone else in this division. With the additional information that visitors Hamilton Academicals have lost three of their last four games, you have to feel there's value in the home win at 5/6.
Real Madrid vs Getafe - away win at 6/1, lay Real Madrid at 7/4. Whichever of these two bets suit you, go for it! Why? Well, Real Madrid are nothing without Cristiano Ronaldo. He knows it, they know it, and now even fans know it. They've not scored in any of their last two competitive games and that looks less likely than normal to change today as they face bogey side Getafe. Real Madrid have only won once in their last three attempts to beat Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu, and that was the fortunate game last season which saw Pepe dismissed for his brutal assault. They've lost to Getafe twice in their last three meetings and haven't managed to beat their fellow Madrid rivals by more than a solitary goal since 2004. A misfiring Real Madrid will struggle aganst a plucky and determined Getafe today. I mean, hell, Real Madrid got battered 4-0 by lowly Segunda B outfit Alcorcon mid-week in the Copa del Rey and they fielded what can only be described as 80% of their first team. Real Madrid are utterly inept at defending in general but particularly when balls are played in behind their full backs. Frankly, I can't see the under-pressure hosts coming out and putting on a good display against bogey side Getafe today but I can see the opposite occurring. Therefore, I feel that laying Real Madrid at 7/4 looks a great bet today.
Osasuna vs Barcelona - both sides to score at 4/5. This bet is a bit of a no-brainer, really! There's only one game Osasuna haven't scored in this season out of the nine competitive games they've played and have also managed to score against Barcelona in their last two meetings too. I don't feel I need to explain why Barcelona will score in this game because they simply always do score. Therefore, taking both sides to score at 4/5 looks a great bet to me today!
Cordoba vs Huesca - home win at 21/20. Cordoba are very much the home side that they were last year as they've won three of their four home games played this season, drawing the other game. Although their recent form has dipped and left them winless in three games, the hosts still have everything they require to win this game at their fortress as their record clearly indicates. Visitors Huesca are enduring a poor season thus far just one win in nine games so far. They've not won in their last five games, drawing three times and losing twice. Although they're not the worst side in the division, Huesca will stil have a very difficult task to take points off a side that very few sides take points off when they're playing them away from home. Frankly, taking Cordoba to win this game at 21/20 may have its risk elements but it's still very much worthwhile in my eyes.

Today's featured game is the Veikkausliiga encounter between relegation battlers KuPS Kuopio and title hopefuls FC Honka Espoo. The hosts have started playing better football lately simply because they have to to stay in the Veikkausliiga. They've won three from their last five games, losing two along the way, their most recent of which was a 3-0 humbling at TPS Turku last match. The hosts are in a better position than their fellow relegation stragglers RoPS Rovaniemi and JJK Jyvaskyla but will still seek any possible points to secure their Veikkausliiga status where possible. However, despite KuPS Kuopio's recent valiant efforts, what we've found out is that when they encounter a top quality side with valiant efforts because their need for points is great too...KuPS Kuopio get swept away. TPS Turku proved that last match and I rate FC Honka Espoo as being better than TPS Turku, if only marginally. The visitors average scoring over two goals per game and have won four of their last five games. The contrast of quality between these two sides is vast and when a good side plays with great motivation, they almost always win. FC Honka Espoo have to win this game to have any hope of winning the Veikkausliiga, title, which is looking unlikely now due to HJK Helsinki's somewhat simple home games remaining. However, today's visitors aren't going to let it slide that easily and will be well-motivated for today's game. Frankly, I'm beyond surprised that the odds on this game are 19/20 because there's such a big difference between these two sides that it's unreal. I expect the odds to drop so take them whilst you can!
Saturday's Picks
My tips:
As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:
KuPS Kuopio vs FC Honka Espoo - away win at 19/20 - see introduction for full details.
Internacional vs Flamengo - home win at 3/4. Despite the recent poor form of hosts Internacional (two consecutive domestic defeats), it's undeniable that Internacional remain the better side between these two clubs. Their home form is still amongst the best in the league with eight wins from twelve games, losing just twice on the way. Flamengo, despite being a good side, are a poor away side. They've lost six away games from eleven and won just twice. They're in good form with three wins from four games but they're going to have a very tough game here as they've lost three of their last four away games against Internacional, drawing the other a couple of seasons ago. For me, form takes a backseat here as there's a significant quality gap so the home win at 3/4 looks good for me.
Swansea City vs Sheffield United - away win at 13/10. Promotion hopefuls Sheffield United journey to Wales to take on out-of-sorts Swansea City. The hosts are without a win in their last four games, drawing three and losing once. It's more than apparent to see exactly where Swansea City's problems lie at the moment with just a single glance at the league table - goalscoring. They've managed to score just three goals in their first eight games of the season, which isn't nearly good enough, as I'm sure you're all aware. I think it's fair to say that they're really missing Jason Scotland since his summer transfer to Wigan Athletic. Today, Swansea City are hosting a Sheffield United side that have won three from their last five games and are generally looking pretty reliable when it comes to winning games. I can't see an out-of-form side that can't score goals playing against a better side and obtaining a result so I'm siding with the away win at 13/10.
Ipswich Town vs Newcastle United - away win at 13/10. Hosts Ipswich Town are playing better than they have done all season with just two defeats in their last five games, drawing the other three. That said, it's still more than evident the number of problems they actually have as they've still not won a league game in eight attempts. Today they host a Newcastle United side that were humbled 3-0 mid-week by Plymouth Argyle in the League Cup. However, I would urge you all to disregard this as Newcastle United fielded a lot of youngsters in that game as they are prioritising promotion this season. As far as league form goes, Newcastle United have won four from their last five games and are currently second in the Championship table. Effectively, Newcastle United are a better side a and are in better form so an away win looks fairly straightforward at 13/10.
Bristol Rovers vs Brighton & Hove Albion - home win at 4/5. A great start to their campaign has seen Bristol Rovers soar to third place in the table with six wins from eight games. They've won four of their last five games and are obviously on a massive high at the moment. Bristol Rovers aren't a prolific side but they're certainly effective. Today they host a Brighton & Hove Albion side that that had been on a good run before losing 3-2 at home to Southend United last match. Two wins from eight games says that Brighton & Hove Albion could be in for a long season, especially as there's only one side in the whole division that has currently conceded more goals than they have. To put it bluntly, the visitors look like cannon fodder currently and the hosts look like the cannon. 4/5 on this selection should be a great bet!
Shrewsbury Town vs Northampton Town - home win at 4/5. Four straight defeats has now seen recently relegated Northampton Town slide to just fourth bottom. They've lost five games from eight so far and don't appear to be showing any signs of getting out of their rut. Hosts Shrewsbury Town have been a "home side" for some time now and this season isn't proving too different as they've already notched up two home wins. Three wins in four games has got them to seventh in League Two and form/momentum is pointing to this record being continued today. Taking the home win at 4/5 should be a good bet today.
Maag Tammeka Tartu vs Tulevik Viljandi - home win at 2/1. I know Maag Tammeka Tartu aren't a particularly good side but they warrant better odds than 2/1, surely? It was only last season that they finished above Tulevik Viljandi, if only on goal difference. They've also won this fixture for three out of the last four Meistriliiga campaigns, drawing the other game. Whereas the table this year shows a clear points difference between the two sides, I don't think there's much in it quality-wise. You also have to take into account that Tulevik Viljandi haven't won in five games, losing their last three on the bounce. Maag Tammeka Tartu, however, have won their last three games and have some great momentum entering this game. Frankly, I'd expect a lot lower odds but I'm happy to have a medium stake on the home win at 2/1 with the above information in mind!
Inter Turku vs Tampere United - home win at evens. After their defeat last match at home to HJK Helsinki, Tampere United's surprise title challenge is now finished with and they look to battle out a Europa League place with today's hosts Inter Turku and IFK Mariehamn. Yes, I am not including Haka Valkeakoski in this equation because they're atrocious and I'll be astounded if they make it! Basically, this match has suddenly become a lot more important than was initially thought. Fortunately for Inter Turku, they're hosting a side that have lost more games away games than the majority of the Veikkausliiga. In fact, only three sides have lost more away games and they're the bottom three in the Veikkausliiga! They hosts have got some good momentum at the moment as they're unbeaten in four games, winning twice and drawing twice. It doesn't seem to matter what form or momentum Tampere United have - they just seem to win at home and lose away, generally! I can't say I think anything different is going to occur today, either - Inter Turku have got enough to win this game and form says that they will. Evens on this selection should be a reliable bet.
FC Koln vs Bayer 04 Leverkusen - away win at evens. Despite a disappointing cup defeat mid-week, Bayer 04 Leverkusen are playing very well in the Bundesliga. They've currently won four games from six and remain unbeaten in second place. Today they travel to FC Koln, a side that has managed just one victory in their six games thus far, losing four along the way. They've not won any games at home in this campaign and although they'll look to make it difficult for Bayer 04 Leverkusen to play their football today, I can't help but feel that when the final whistle goes, it'll be an away win that has happened due to the quality and efficiency of Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The away win at evens could prove very valuable indeed today!
Szombathelyi Haladas vs Diosgyori VTK - home win at 5/6. Both of these two sides have made atrocious starts to the season but one of them shouldn't really be there; Szombathelyi Haladas. They had a great Soproni Liga campaign last year and managed to play a few European games this year as a result of it. They're a decent side and have proven such by gaining an impressive win against Fehervar this season. Their general form has been their let-down as opposed to their actual ability. However, their form has shown signs of improvement lately having only lost two of their last five games and having scored nine goals in the process. Despite being above Szombathelyi Haladas, Diosgyori VTK are in a worse position in my eyes because they don't have a particularly good squad and they've now lost three in a row. They're just not scoring enough goals, unlike their hosts today, who are conceding too many. I expect a lot of goals in this game but I think it's time that Szombathelyi Haladas shone again by winning this game at 5/6.
Fylkir Reykjavik vs FH Hafnarfjordur - away win at 6/4. High-flying Fylkir Reykjavik host giants FH Hafnarfjordur in a game that arguably the hosts need to win more than the visitors. Reigning champions FH Hafnarfjordur are leading the Landsbankadeild Karla by five points currently and are starting to look settled again after a mid-season blip. When FH Hafnarfjordur are settled, other sides start to lose games against them - constantly! Fylkir Reykjavik are no exception to this ruling having lost this exact fixture for four seasons running now. Fylkir Reykjavik have only beaten FH Hafnarfjordur twice in their last ten attempts and both of those were away from home. In terms of form, there's not much between these two sides but when you mention ability, FH Hafnarfjordur are the kings of Iceland and I thoroughly expect to see that shine through today as we make money on the outcome with superb odds of 6/4!
Sligo Rovers vs Shamrock Rovers - away win at 10/11. Just one point now seperates league leaders Bohemians and title challengers Shamrock Rovers. The visitors today have won their last three games in a row and are unbeaten in five domestic games. They've only lost three games all season and look intend on taking the title to the wire with Bohemians this season. Shamrock Rovers are the best away side in the division currently, having only lost once on the road this season and winning seven of their fourteen away games. Hosts Sligo Rovers may be unbeaten in three games but they've only won once in five games. Effectively, the hosts shouldn't have enough to trouble the visitors today so the away win at 10/11 looks a good bet.
Sampdoria vs Internazionale - away win at 10/11. Despite a good start to the season, Sampdoria were brought crashing back down to earth by a rampant Fiorentina last match. Unfortunately for Sampdoria, they don't exactly have the easiest of pick-me-up games as they're hosting Jose Mourinho's Internazionale. The visitors are unbeaten this season with four wins from five games and look set for yet another dominating season with the quality available at their disposal. There's not too much between these two form-wise but ultimately, Internazionale have a better squad than Sampdoria on every front so the away win at 10/11 should be fairly routine.
Albinoleffe vs Crotone - home win at 5/6. They've taken a long time starting their Serie B season but Albinoleffe have finally won their first game of the season with a 2-1 victory over Mantova. The hosts are actually a good side but they've really hid it well so far with four straight defeats prior to the win. Albinoleffe will be looking to continue their mini run and they've picked a perfect game to do it in as they're hosting newly-promoted Crotone, a side that still has no victories in Serie B this season, drawing four games and losing two. Their massive problem is goalscoring, something that is clearly indicated by the fact that they've only scored once all season. A resurgent Albinoleffe is a dangerous Albinoleffe and I fear Crotone might just get taught a lesson today. 5/6 on the home win for a good side that's beginning to wake up looks a good bet to me!
Salernitana vs Ascoli - away win at 19/10. I'm not entirely sure why Ascoli are at 19/10 to win this game but perhaps that's why I'm not a bookmaker. Not only did they win here last season, but they've not lost any game from six this season in Serie B and have won three of their last five games. They're travelling to a Salernitana side that obtained their first point of the season away to Piacenza last match but still have no wins. They've scored just two goals all season, hence their problem, and let in eleven goals. It's a considerable problem to not score goals but it's even worse when you've conceded more goals than the rest of your division. For me, this has away win written all over it and can only imagine the bookies have made a slight error with this one! 19/10 on the away could be a bargain here.
Rio Ave vs Academica de Coimbra - home win at 5/6. Unbeaten after five games, Rio Ave have made a tremendous start to this campaign, one that I honestly didn't think they were capable of. Their unbeaten status is largely due to their boring football as they've drawn three times and won twice by only scoring five goals and conceding two. Today they face an Academica de Coimbra side that boast a very similar record, only that they've lost three and drawn twice instead of actually bothering to win a game. I expect this game to be mind-numbingly boring and very low-scoring but think Rio Ave have the momentum behind them to give them a narrow victory here at 5/6.
Valencia vs Atletico Madrid - home win at 10/11. I was going to stay well clear of this game until I saw the head-to-head statistics. Why? Well, both of these sides are generally unreliable as hell when it comes to betting. Valencia managed to let a lead slip against the ten men of Sporting Gijon last weekend and lost to Getafe mid-week but have already beaten a very good Sevilla CF this season. Atletico Madrid have an even more puzzling set of results as they've already been demolished by Barcelona and Malaga, as well as having been held to a draw at home by lowly Almeria mid-week. There's a lot of internal problems at the club at the moment and to make matters worse, they've lost Sergio Aguero through injury for a couple of weeks. Things have gone from bad to worse as Atletico Madrid are still yet to win a Primera Liga game this season and that doesn't look likely to change as they've lost here at the Mestalla for four games running now. 10/11 looks to be a bargain on this one, particularly as Atletico Madrid's defence is a real mess at the moment.
Cadiz vs Recreativo de Huelva - away win at 8/5. Newly-promoted Cadiz have found life in the Segunda Liga very tricky indeed with no wins in four games. They've only conceded three goals but the fact that they've only scored once in those four games speaks volumes. Visitors Recreativo de Huelva have won three from four games since being relegated from the Primera Liga and seem intent on returning there as swiftly as possible. Cadiz don't have the ability nor the momentum to match a very much in-form Recreativo de Huelva tonight so I think the away win at 8/5 looks relatively straightforward.
Kalmar vs IFK Goteborg - away win at 9/5. Risky call? Sure, why not! Since the loss of the two Elms, Kalmar have really struggled in their games, which is something you'd expect from a decent side that have relied upon a couple of talented individuals for too long. Kalmar have now just won twice in five games and their Allsvenskan title challenge looks rocky to say the least. Visitors IFK Goteborg were in a similar position to what Kalmar are now but in July when they lost Pontus Wernblom, ironically. However, IFK Goteborg are well and truly back now with no defeats in five games, winning three of them and drawing twice. Whereas that's a good source of information, the other convincing factor was that IFK Goteborg have won three out of their last three Allsvenskan games here without any great difficulty. In fact, here's a statistic for you - Kalmar haven't taken any points off IFK Goteborg in their last five Allsvenskan games at either ground. How about that for a confidence booster?? So yeah, 9/5 suddenly looks quite tempting, doesn't it?
St.Gallen vs Young Boys Bern - away win at 10/11. I don't think I can ever thank the bookies enough for drastically underestimating just how good Young Boys Bern actually are - long may it last! You'd have thought that their persistent victories over their rivals and tremendous form would be enough to show how good they are but apparently not! They've now won eight Super League games from ten, losing just once along the way and averaging 2.3 goals per game currently. Today they face newly-promoted St.Gallen, who are unbeaten at home so far in the Super League, although I can't help but feel that's about to change! No wins in three games and two defeats along the way means that St.Gallen are currently on a slippery slope and it's about to get a whole lot more slippy as they host the best side in Switzerland. Everything about this game points to the away win so I'm more than happy to take it at 10/11.
