Today’s secondary featured game is the A-League encounter between Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar.

The hosts are going from bad to worse as the season progresses. They’re not scoring anywhere near enough goals when you consider how potent their attack is and they’re shipping goals far too easily. Their lack of cohesion is terrifying and their morale is dropping like a stone following three defeats in their last four games. Absentees are mounting with Billy Mehmet being the latest casualty on the list alongside various others including Neville, Sikora, and Coyne, just to name a few. Smeltz is a doubt and that coupled with the absence makes Perth Glory’s potency somewhere between zero and…zero, especially with playmaker Andrezinho a big doubt too. Nothing is going right for Perth Glory right now and thus I think that they’ll struggle here.

Brisbane Roar aren’t back to 100% just yet with Broich and Henrique still doubtful but the return of Nichols in midfield is a welcome boost for boss Postecoglou. Brisbane Roar were excellent in their 3-1 win against Melbourne Victory last time out as they “stopped the rot” and they bing momentum into this game as a result. When they want to be, Brisbane Roar are the best side in the A-League and with Nichols back, a win under their belts, and not to mention them having arguably the best manager in the A-League, you really have to fancy their chances here. I don’t think it’ll be an especially entertaining game unless Brisbane Roar make it so but they should control this game enough to secure three points.

For me, there’s value on the away win at evens, especially with Perth Glory’s attack decimated and their defence shocking.

Verdict: Brisbane Roar to win at evens.

Wednesday’s Picks

My tips:

Central Coast Martiners vs Melbourne Victory – over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Defensive stalwart Zwaanswijk is suspended for Central Coast Mariners, which does leave a big hole in the middle of their defence. Indeed, if we’re to believe the rumours then the club’s top goalscorer Simon is on his way to the K-League and may not feature here as a result. It looks like Central Coast Mariners may no longer be as pleased with their excellent start to the season! Nonetheless, they’re a side with plenty of spirit and although I do label Simon as their “leading goalscorer” it is important to note how many team goals this side scores rather than depending on heroes etc. Ibini-Isei and Amini cause no end of problems to opposition and irrespective of Simon playing or not, I still think that the impressive hosts will be able to score at least once here. They should have bagged a few in their last game but found lady luck in their way. Without Zwaanswijk at the back, though, it’s hard to envision them keeping a clean sheet here.

Visitors Melbourne Victory may be the bigger team but they’re not playing like it right now. They’re attacking well enough and with Harry Kewell in their ranks, it’s not really a great surprise that that is the case. Hernandez, Thompson, and even the scarcely-used Solorzano are all very dangerous attackers and Melbourne Victory have profited from that this season. However, their defence is just shambolic with no real shape nor set back four. They’ve only kept three clean sheets in the A-League this season despite thirteen attempts although rather worryingly, their last clean sheet came in a 0-0 draw with Central Coast Mariners here. Hmm! However, times have changed since then as both sides have gathered more momentum in varying ways. Melbourne Victory are scoring more goals but are shipping more whereas their hosts are becoming more clinical so I think that we’re in for an interesting game here.

Central Coast Mariners should win this one but at odds of 8/11, I’m just not interested. Instead, I’m far more interested by the possibility of going over 2.5 goals at 4/5. Melboure Victory have gone over 2.5 goals in six out of their last seven games as they almost always score and concede in the same game. The hosts are not in an ideal position to keep them out but they are well-placed to score a few themselves so my call is over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.

Brisbane Roar vs Wellington Phoenix

For membership details, go here.

Today’s featured game is the A-League game between league leaders Brisbane Roar and New Zealand outfit Wellington Phoenix. Both sides are attacking sides so we should hopefully see a good game of football between the two sides today.

Brisbane Roar are the leading side in the A-League because of how efficiently they play at home and away. At home, they average scoring nearly two goals per home game but most importantly, they boast a very strong defensive record. Brisbane Roar average conceding less than a goal per home game but they’ve had a bit of a break lately due to the horrific floods in the local area. Brisbane are back in business today, however, and they’ll be raring to go to appease their loyal fans and local residents so I expect a very spirited Brisbane display today. Costa Rican striker Solorzano and emerging attacker Barbarouses have been in inspired form for the Roar this season, especially with a consistent midfield behind them so the Roar have grown strong as a unit. That unit will be tested after today’s game with important defender DeVere set to depart to try his hand in the K-League after this match so this game should be something of a farewell to him, which gives the Roar yet another reason to turn up today. Seven out of the Roar’s last nine home games have gone over 2.5 goals and given their strong attacking ability, I fancy them to do well today.

However, visitors Wellington Phoenix hope to have some input on that and their good form of late says that’ll probably do so too. Their away record isn’t convincing due to a slow start to the campaign but make no mistake here – Ricki Herbert’s Wellington Phoenix are a good side, especially from an attacking perspective and that should really show today. Defender Lochhead’s return after lengthy absence has added a solidarity to the team that was very much required and although the Phoenix’s defence tends to be their weakest point, he’s still brought some much needed stability to the team. Wellington Phoenix lost 1-4 at home to Brisbane Roar earlier this season so they’ll have revenge in mind although with some atrocious defending in their arsenal, they’re going to have to extract their revenge by outscoring their opponents or they won’t succeed, in my view. Therefore, we should be in for an interesting game today!

Four out of the last six head-to-head meetings between these sides have gone over 2.5 goals due to both sides attacking well and scoring goals and this game shouldn’t differentiate today, really. The Roar are looking to bounce back from the local disasters of late and Wellington Phoenix are attempting to make up for a poor season thus far so I expect an open game with plenty of goals today. Therefore, my call is for there to be over 2.5 goals in this game at decent odds of 4/5 as motivation is high and attacking ability on both sides is strong.

Verdict: Over 2.5 goals at 4/5.
