SV Ried vs LASK Linz

Today’s featured game is the Austrian Bundesliga match between SV Ried and LASK Linz. I couldn’t have been happier to see the slow start that SV Ried have had to this campaign because I know how good they are at home and had hoped the bookies would read too much into it, which they happily have! SV Ried have played three home games this season, winning once, drawing once, and losing once. Nothing spectacular, no? Wrong! Those three games were against Salzburg, Rapid Vienna and Sturm Graz respectively, three sides that have finished above SV Ried since about 104BC! Those three sides are part of the big four in Austria along with Austria Vienna and SV Ried are always the side just outside that group that occasionally threatens to become part of it. I’m impressed that they’ve only lost one of those games, really! That said, SV Ried’s home form last season saw them lose a grand total of zero games in the Bundesliga, so perhaps it could be pessimistically viewed as a bad start. Honestly though, SV Ried’s home record is phenomenal, generally. For instance, last season they won a massive fourteen out of eighteen home games, a record bettered only by eventual Bundesliga winners Salzburg. Frankly, they’re a terrifying team at home for all sides in the Bundesliga and I think LASK Linz could well be taught a lesson today. After all, they’ve not even scored against SV Ried in their last three meetings at either ground, losing on all three occasions. They’ve lost here for three seasons out of four, drawing the other. I think this is one of those beautiful little occasions where form doesn’t tell half the story. LASK Linz have won three games in five, losing just once but note that they’ve not won any away from home – that’s because they’re poor travellers. SV Ried haven’t won in five games but if you look at who they’ve played, that’s more than understandable for the most part. For me, the bookies have criminally underestimated how good SV Ried at home and taking them at evens could be a fantastic bet today.

Sunday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

SV Ried vs LASK Linz – home win at evens – see introduction for full details.

Naftan Novopolotsk vs Dinamo Minsk – home win at 2/1. How long have I been waiting for this one?! Giants Dinamo Minsk travel to Naftan Novopolotsk with the knowledge that only their ability to draw away games rather than lose them keeps them above Naftan Novopolotsk because these are two of the strongest home sides in the Vysshaya Liga. Seven wins in ten home games says that Naftan Novopolotsk are going to make Dinamo Minsk work very hard to get anything here. True, Dinamo Minsk have only lost one away game this season but they’ve only won three in ten attempts so it may be worthwhile laying the visitors if the odds are good enough. For me though, I’m going to stick my neck out and call the home win at 2/1. Naftan Novopolotsk are bloody good at home and a win would give them a great chance of achieving European football again next year. Dinamo Minsk will want to secure second place but it’s unlikely they’re going to move one way or the other, frankly. Summarised, taking the home win at 2/1 could well be a very good bet today.

Minior Pernik vs Litex Lovech – away win at 5/6. This appears to be another case of the bookies taking too much notice of form and not enough of quality. Minior Pernik have only lost twice in their last five games, winning two and drawing once, but they’re still a poor outfit in comparison to giants Litex Lovech. Since the installation of new manager Angel Chervenkov, Litex Lovech have discovered their old confidence and ability, winning three games from three. There’s a massive quality gap between these two sides and I’ll be extremely surprised if it doesn’t show by the final whistle. 5/6 on the away win should be something of a banker today!

Kladno vs Bohemians Prague – home win at evens. Despite the obvious shitness of Kladno, they have now won two games from their last two, including one very impressive away win against Sigma Olomouc. Suffice to say that they’re entering this home match with a considerable amount of momentum. Bohemians Prague are a home side at the best of times but they’re not even managing that succesfully this season as they lie second bottom in the league. If you consider that their home form is misfiring then it doesn’t take a genius to work out how badly their away form is at the moment. Yeah, you got it – they’re shocking. They’ve played three away games this season and lost all of them, scoring just one goal in the process. Basically, Bohemians Prague look easy pickings for an in-form Kladno today so I’m taking the home win at evens.

Sigma Olomouc vs Jablonec – away win at 2/1. Sigma Olomouc have got issues. Seriously. Any side that can lose at home to Kladno is going to have real problems against bigger and better sides. Whereas Jablonec aren’t giants, they’re a good side with some fantastic momentum at the moment and will be a stern test for Sigma Olomouc. The hosts haven’t won any of their last five games, losing twice and drawing three times. The visitors have won three from their last five games, their most recent of which was a derby victory over Slovan Liberec. With this in mind, the away win already looked tempting. However, upon checking the head-to-head statistics, I had to stand back in amazement as I discovered that Sigma Olomouc haven’t beaten Jablonec home or away in their last eight attempts! Generally, Jablonec win the home game and draw the away game but they have won the away game just once. Today seems the opportune time for that away win to be recorded again but even if not, if you take the bet with draw no bet then you should be laughing at the end of this game! A woefully out-of-sorts Sigma Olomouc look pure cannon fodder for a rampant Jablonec here so I’m going to go with the straight away win at 2/1.

TP 47 Tornio vs Klubi 04 Helsinki – home win at evens. Klubi 04 Helsinki just can’t gain any form of consistency at the moment which leaves them sliding precariously down the table towards the drop zone at the bottom of the Ykkonen. Fortunately for them, I think the season will end just before they hit the drop zone but nonetheless, this is an alarming slump. They’ve lost three from their last five games and now travel to a resurgent TP 47 Torino. The hosts have now won three consecutive games as they desperately seek to avoid relegation to the Kakkonen. This should be a very tight game with neither side wanting to lose but I can’t look beyond the momentum of TP 47 Tornio today so taking the home win at evens looks a potentially good bet.

FCV vs GBK Kokkola – home win at evens. I’m a little surprised at these odds in the Kakkonen Lokho C game between FCV and GBK Kokkola because the hosts have won two consecutive games now and host a side that has not only won just once on the road this season but a side that has lost no less than six times in their ten away games. Their goalscoring record on the road is feeble with only just over a goal every other game on average. The visitors may have only lost once in their last five games but FCV know how to win at home and they’ve got momentum behind them so taking the home win at evens seems logical and profitable to me.

AEK Athens vs Panathinaikos – away win at 8/5. You have to feel sorry for AEK Athens, don’t you? They’re trying their best to make the Greek Super League have a “big three” but it’s just not happening anymore. Spiralling debts and haphazard consistency has seen it become a “big two” in Greece – Olympiakos Piraeus and Panathinaikos. Olympiakos Piraeus won here 2-1 last week and I’ll be surprised if Panathinaikos don’t repeat that feat too, particularly as they’ve won four out of four league games so far this season, conceding just once along the way. Don’t get me wrong, caution is needed here because it is a rivalry match but in terms of quality, Panathinaikos should walk this game with some considerable ease. I’m content that the bookies still rate AEK Athens as big enough to trouble Olympiakos Piraeus and Panathinaikos because I don’t think they are at all. Away win at 8/5 for me!

Agrotikos Asteras vs Diagoras Rodos – home win at 10/11. This B Ethniki game sees Agrotikos Asteras trying to secure their first win of the season, having lost once and drawn once already. However, today seems the opportune moment for them to win a game as they’re hosting a Diagoras Rodos side that managed just two away wins in their entire of last season’s B Ethniki games, losing eight from seventeen, in fact. The hosts today won an impressive eleven games from seventeen and look set to rely upon their home form again to potentially gain access to the Super League come next season. Nobody conceded less goals at home last season than Agrotikos Asteras, something they’ll be keen to emulate this year, no doubt. In those two games, they may not yet have scored but they’ve only conceded once, which is a promising sign so long as they sort their attacking out. Diagoros Rodos may be unbeaten this season but don’t be deceived – both of their games so far have been at home. I thoroughly expect their woefully inadequate away form to kick in today by losing this match and 10/11 is good odds to see it happen at.

Chievo Verona vs Atalanta Bergamo – home win at 11/10. As much as I like Atalanta Bergamo, I have to go against them today. Not only are they travelling to a Chievo Verona side that are unbeaten in three, but they’re also travelling there as a side with just one point from a potential fifteen. Their problem; goalscoring. One goal in five games isn’t good enough at any level, particularly in the prestigious Serie A. Atalanta Bergamo have lost both away games in this season so far whereas Chievo Verona have started this season as they always do by being hard to beat. The hosts enter this game with considerable momentum having won two of their last three games and also in the knowledge that Atalanta Bergamo have never won here. Although there’s not a particular quality gap to speak of, momentum says Chievo Verona are going to win this game so I’m going to follow them with inviting odds of 11/10.

Lyn Oslo vs Tromso - away win at evens. Although not generally considered a particularly good away side, most things appear to be in Tromso’s favour tonight. They’re travelling to a side that have all but accepted relegation with three consecutive defeats and a ten point gap between them and safety. Visitors Tromso enter this game with no defeats in two games and having managed to claim a very respectable draw at Rosenborg BK mid-week. Generally, Tromso tend to struggle in away games due to the massive distance they have to travel to play one on average but today they’re facing a demoralised side and also have European football in their sights. Having been unfortunate to be knocked out by Spain’s Athletic Club de Bilbao, Tromso will be eager to be back in Europe to right wrongs and also bring in a bit of financial support for the Arctic side. Tromso are a good and capable side and really should have enough to overcome a lowly and lacklustre Lyn Oslo today at evens.

Notodden vs Honefoss - away win at evens. League leaders Honefoss travel to Notodden knowing that they’re just six games away from Tippeligaen football next year. Their recent form has been good – two wins and one draw in their last three games – and they face a very poor Notodden who will have to gain a lot more credible results to stay in the Adeccoligaen for next season. Both sides need the points so it should be an open game and if that is the case then Honefoss will surely rip Notodden apart due to the quality differential between the two sides. Notodden have won just once in five games, losing three of those games along the way. Their home form is decent at best but they’re entertaining what is unanimously the best away side in the Adeccoligaen. For me, this game has away win written all over it so I’m happy to take a slice of this pie at evens!

Terek Grozny vs Lokomotiv Moscow - away win at 7/5. This is a very difficult call indeed, one that I laboured over for some time but I’ve decided to roll with it. Terek Grozny at home are one of the hardest sides you’ll have to play against in an away game. They’re not overly good but rather difficult to play against. Grozny is an intimidating to play your football and it has to be either a world-class side or an in-form side that takes three points from Grozny. Visitors Lokomotiv Moscow are not a world-class side, needless to say, but they are massively in-form. Resurgent Lokomotiv Moscow have club legend Yury Semin to thank for their apparent chance of playing European football next year. The Moscow club are currently fourth in the Premier League with four wins from five games and haven’t been beaten in the league in their last ten outings. Lokomotiv Moscow may have won a meager two away games all season but those two games they’ve won in their last three away games, so don’t write them off over that. It also helps my call that Terek Grozny are really struggling with four defeats in their last five games. Whereas I don’t think relegation is a genuine possibility for them, they do need to be careful and start picking up more points or it could become a much more serious problem for them. Lokomotiv Moscow’s goalscoring record is their biggest problem as they rarely score more than 1-2 goals per game. Terek Grozny’s goals scored at home is a record beaten only by league leaders Rubin Kazan currently so Lokomotiv Moscow really need as strong a display today as they’ve been showing in recent weeks. For me, however, there is value in the away win at 7/5 as there’s a real clash between quality and momentum here.

Osasuna vs Sporting Gijon – home win at 10/11. After a difficult draw mid-week at home to Real Zaragoza, Sporting Gijon have yet another difficult game but this time in the Basque country against Osasuna. Although there’s not masses between them, Osasuna are the better side between these two outfits, especially so when playing at home in Pamplona. Although winless at home this season, Osasuna have performed admiraly in their draw with Villarreal and worked hard in their defeat against in-form Sevilla CF. Osasuna claimed a priceless away win against relegation candidates Real Valladolid mid-week in a heated Northern Spain encounter, a match which will have given them great morale ahead of Sporting Gijon’s visit. The visitors today performed decently against Real Zaragoza mid-week but were passed around quite easily by the visitors. Although they looked more incisive than their opponents, Sporting Gijon looked particularly suspect in their from crosses and set pieces, something Osasuna could exploit, particularly with 184cm striker Walter Pandiani on the field, presuming he starts, that is! I expect a very bitter and heated game today in the Basque country but I think Osasuna just have the advantage so I’m going to take the home win at 10/11.

Deportivo La Coruna vs Villarreal – home win at 7/5. This is quite a risky call but Deportivo La Coruna’s form recently has been good and they’re playing at their formidable fortress – Riazor. Only one side lost less home games than Deportivo La Coruna and that was eventual Primera Liga winners Barcelona, a side who themselves failed to win at Riazor. Today’s visitors Villarreal were humbled 3-0 here last season but that’s when they were a well-organised side under the stewardship of Pellegrini. Ever since talented Ernesto Valverde took over, Villarreal have looked a shadow of their former selves as they’re still seeking their first Primera Liga victory after four games. They’ve managed to score just four goals along the way and have now lost midfield general Marcos Senna through injury. This is the last thing that Villarreal need in a very tricky patch of fixtures, really. Deportivo La Coruna will smell blood on Villarreal at the virtually impregnable Riazor and I really fancy them to win the game. The hosts have won two from six games and whereas they may not be firing on all cylinders just yet, they are averaging two goals per game at the moment and that should really be enough against a goal-shy and out-of-form Villarreal for the home win at 7/5.

Liverpool Montevideo vs Penarol – home win at 7/4. I’m not sure how the bookies rate Liverpool Montevideo at nearly 2/1 for a game they’ve won for two seasons running against a side that they can match on their day but whatever! I suppose it’s fair to say that Penarol are one of the giants of Uruguayan football but they’ve had a mixed start to this campaign with two wins from four games. Hosts Liverpool Montevideo have won three out of their four opening games, all three of which were at home, leaving them with a 100% record. As I mentioned earlier, Liverpool Montevideo have won this fixture for two seasons running and although there’s little in the way of quality between these two sides, I’m not seeing anything from Penarol to convince me otherwise just yet. For those reasons, taking the home win at 7/4 could be a very good bet indeed.

AEK Athens vs Olympiakos Piraeus

Today’s featured game sees a Greek heavyweight clash between AEK Athens and Olympiakos Piraeus. I’m not sure how many leagues could get away with such a massive opening game but there we are! Over the past few years, Olymipakos Piraeus and Panathinaikos have started pulling away from AEK Athens, most probably due to the persistent financial issues of AEK Athens. Today is a situation where the away side is well and truly the better side, particularly as hosts AEK Athens have just lost experienced centre-back Sotirios Kyrgiakos to English Premier League outfit Liverpool. As this is the opening game of the Greek Super League for both sides, it’s more than obvious that this game should be approached with caution, particularly as these two sides are rivals. However, given that AEK Athens laboured to a rather embarassing defeat to Vaslui in Romania mid-week whereas Olympiakos Piraeus started their tie with Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova by winning 2-0 and virtually assuring their progression to the latter stages. What this tells us is that Olympiakos Piraeus have good momentum at the moment, a good squad and don’t need to focus excessively on the return leg next week. AEK Athens are in a bit of disarray, morale is low, they’ve lost one of their best players and they have it all to do next week to qualify for the latter stages of the Europa League. With all this in mind, and that Olympiakos Piraeus are the current reigning champions and will be looking to get off a winning start, an away win at 7/5 looks very favourable indeed. Take with draw no bet if unsure.

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

AEK Athens vs Olympiakos Piraeus – away win at 7/5 – see introduction for full details.

Gremio vs Atletico Mineiro – home win at 4/5. Atletico Mineiro are gradually being brought back down to reality from their previous dizzying heights having not won a game in their last three. It was expected by us all; they just didn’t have the quality to maintain their run. Unfortunately for them, the middle of their bad run sees them travel to Gremio, a real fortress for the home side having won eight home games from ten this season, drawing the other two. The home side have better ability and although their form is a little patchy themselves, they’re on home soil and should make it count today. 4/5 on a home win looks a good bet.

Atletico Paranaense vs Sao Paulo - away win at 11/8. Who can bet against Sao Paulo at the moment? They had such a slow and painful start to the season that even I began to doubt their credentials, despite possessing a wonderful squad. However, they’ve well and truly emerged from that barren spell with a tremendous run of seven straight wins with no defeats in their past nine games. That’s daunting form whoever you face, let alone when it’s against lowly Atletico Paranaense. The hosts have had some bad form themselves but are also now on a good run with four wins from their past five games, despite having lost their last outing. They’re beginning to move away from the drop zone but today they entertain a much better side that are in very good form. The hosts aren’t particularly lethal at home, much as the visitors aren’t on the road. Momentum and quality points to the away win here, however – as do I. 11/8 on an away win looks worthwhile.

Rijeka vs Hajduk Split – home win at 2/1. Why on earth are Rijeka 2/1 to win this game?! They’ve won this fixture for two years running now, and that was when Hajduk Split were playing well! Rijeka have won both of their home games this season, scoring nine goals in the process. Hajduk Split are still to register a win having endured a great deal of turmoil of late having parted with striker Nikola Kalinic and their manager too. Everything here points to a home win so I’m going to agree with that and state that 2/1 looks a potential bargain!

Pribram vs Sigma Olomouc – home win at 7/5. After a spirited but ultimately disappointing display in Liverpool, Sigma Olomouc return to the Czech Republic and now face a resilient Pribram. The hosts are some distance from being as good as Sigma Olomouc, make no mistake, but they do know how to win at home, which was displayed very well last season. Today’s visitors have another tie with Everton next week to look at and their minds will most likely be elsewhere, particularly against little Pribram. For those reasons, I think a home win could be stolen here and it’s certainly worth a punt at 7/5.

Kladno vs Jablonec - away win at 6/5. If I thought I was impressed by Jablonec last year then this year they’ve been an absolute revelation! Three wins and one draw from their opening four games certainly signals their intent and puts them in good stead to overcome one of the Gambrinus Liga’s worst sides – Kladno. The hosts have claimed just one point from four games but have lost their last three in succession. Conclusion? Momentum and ability says away win and I agree. This is one of my favourite bets of the day at 6/5!

Esbjerg vs Aalborg - away win at 13/10. A horrendous start to the Superligaen had me convinced that the shit Aalborg had returned from last season and were destined for another nightmarish season. However, four straight wins after it have me convinced that the good Aalborg is back! Has there ever been a more interchangable side than Aalborg when it comes to ability?! Either way, their momentum at the moment is massive and I’ll be surprised if they fail to win at lowly Esbjerg given that they’ve already managed an impressive win against a much tougher opponent this season (Brondby in this instance). 13/10 on the away win here seems good value.

Fulham vs Chelsea - home win and draw at 7/5. Impressive Chelsea travel to bogey-side Fulham in the knowledge that they’ve only beaten them twice in their past five attempts, their most recent of which was a 2-2 draw here last season. Worryingly for Chelsea, Fulham have strengthened their squad even more since last season and will now pose a greater threat, in my opinion. That said, clinical striker Andy Johnson will not be playing football in this game and won’t be for some time due to a horrendous challenge from an Amkar Perm player last match. Both sides are playing well but I can’t see either side winning today as Fulham are very organised defensively but missing arguably their best goalscorer too. For those reasons, taking a home win at double chance odds of 7/5 looks an interesting bet.

Burnley vs Everton – away win at 5/4. Despite their heroic victory over Manchester United, they are going to be absolutely shattered for playing with every bit of strength they had in what was easily their “cup final”. Today they’re facing a very wounded but talented Everton squad on the back of a 4-0 demolition over Czech outfit Sigma Olomouc. Their defeat to Arsenal was farcical because it was a catalogue of defensive errors and wouldn’t have occurred if there hadn’t been a very poor defensive display by Everton. Since then, David Moyes has no doubt laid down the law and Everton are beginning to look like the moulded unit of war that they generally are. I think Burnley are in for a very rough ride today. It’s not enough to play like one match is a cup final – it has to be every week in the Premier League and I think Burnley might just taste that today. An away win at 5/4 looks a real bargain.

West Ham United vs Tottenham Hotspur – away win at 13/10. First things first – this is a derby so approach with caution. You already know my thoughts on how well Tottenham Hotspur are playing under Harry Redknapp and they currently look unstoppable. A West Ham United side that have barely strengthened over the summer and look decidedly lightweight up front (excepting Carlton Cole) should be ripe for a defeat at home today. Odds of 13/10 on an away win look very interesting indeed.

Cardiff City vs Bristol City – home win at 5/6. Cardiff City have genuinely surprised and impressed me this season. Despite losing some key players over summer, they’ve come out fighting and now look better than ever. Bristol City, however, don’t look nearly as potent as they did last year and I think the form guide is a bit misleading as their past two wins have been fortunate at the best of times. For those reasons, with the additional information that Cardiff City are good at home, I think 5/6 on a home win looks good value.

Rotherham United vs Rochdale - home win at 5/6. Rotherham United have been playing well this season. Two wins from three games and their only defeat coming against an impressive Bournemouth signals a potentially very good season in the offering for Rotherham United. Rochdale, by contrast, have decreased their quality considerably since last year and seem to be struggling to score, let alone win. They’ve claimed just one win from their opening three games and look ripe for a defeat away to a rampant Rotherham United. Odds of 5/6 on a home win could be a steal here.

Levadiakos vs Kavala - home win at 10/11. This is a slightly dubious game as it is the opening game of the season for both sides and neither side are much good. However, Levadiakos managed to show that they’re good at home last season if nothing else and I expect them to make that count again this year or else they’re looking at a very real relegation threat. Newly-promoted Kavala will be happy to take a point today but I don’t think they’re capable of getting one. Odds of 10/11 could be prove fruitful for a home win today.

Szombathelyi Haladas vs Fehervar  – away win at 5/4. Before the weekend started, I was pretty damn happy with this selection. In fact, it was a potential contender for “game of the day” for me. However, given the ridiculous results that have occurred in the Soproni Liga this weekend, I have to emphasise caution over this game! It’s pure superstition, of course, but something bizarre s happening in Hungary so take care! Nonetheless, Fehervar are in such a good run of form that it’s impossible to disregard them winning away to a Szombathelyi Haladas side that have claimed zero points from nine this season. Fehervar have won all four of their games so far and despite Szombathelyi Haladas being a tricky customer on their day, I don’t think today is going to be their day. An away win at 5/4 looks very inviting.

Derry City vs St. Patrick’s Athletic – home win at 3/4. Despite winning last match, Derry City have been somewhat unconvincing of late. It’s their only win in their past five games but they finally look to be returning to winning ways. St. Patrick’s Athletic are back from a nightmarish trip to Bucharest which saw them effectively dumped out of European football by Romanian giants Steaua Bucharest. Nonetheless, St. Patrick’s Athletic, like all Irish sides, will not give up and will be focusing on the return leg next week. Their trip to Derry City today will be of little consequence to them today as their season is already over domestically. A home win at 3/4 looks very much on the cards.

Heerenveen vs AZ Alkmaar – away win at 11/10. After a valuable but hard-earned draw in Greece mid-week, a tired Heerenveen return to Holland and find they’re hosting reigning Eredivisie champions AZ Alkmaar, who are already looking extremely potent in front of goal with ten goals scored in their past three games, two of which were wins. A usually compact Heerenveen are going to have to fight tooth and nail to get something here today and I don’t think they’re capable after their mid-week exploits. For me, this game has away win written all over it and it looks particularly worthwhile at 11/10.

Odd Grenland Skien vs Tromso IL - home win with -1.75 handicap at 17/10. Odd Grenland Skien have had a very good season since earning promotion from the Adeccoligaen. Their home form shows they’ve won six games from their opening ten, drawing three and losing just once. They average over two goals per game at home and this looks likely to do damage to a frail Tromso IL backline that average conceding two goals per game on the road. Not only that, but they return from a very tiring journey to the Basque country where they lost 3-2 to Athletic Club de Bilbao in what was a very difficult game. Tromso IL know they have a decent chance of progression, however, so their focus will be on next week’s game. I think they could well be on the receiving end of a beating today so taking Odd Grenland Skien with the -1.75 handicap at 17/10 could be one of the bargains of the day.

Stabaek vs Valerenga Oslo – home win with -1.75 handicap at 6/4. Despite being completed outplayed by Valencia CF mid-week, Stabaek have the perfect game to ease themselves back into form as they host a very poor Valerenga Oslo side that have now lost four Tippeligaen games in a row without even scoring a goal. To put it bluntly, survival is beginning to look extremely unlikely if this form continues. Today they’re facing one of the most potent attack forces in the Tippeligaen as Stabaek have the second-highest goalscoring record in the division. The 1.75 handicap should be easily beaten by Stabaek today and this could be a real bargain at 6/4 because of it.

Cracovia Krakow vs Lech Poznan - away win with -1.75 handicap at 2/1. Despite being let down by Lech Poznan in their last Ekstraklasa outing, they made up for it mid-week with a relatively unlikely victory over Belgium’s Club Brugge, so we’ll wipe the slate clean! Lech Poznan are a very good side on their day and today they travel to a poor Cracovia Krakow side that have recently sacked their manager and are in something of a disarray. They don’t have the ability to get themselves out of their current predicament without a manager so taking Lech Poznan to win with a -1.75 handicap at 2/1 looks a potential bargain.

Maritimo vs Leixoes - home win at 4/5. An impressive draw at SL Benfica last match has done much to prove to me that Maritimo still have the quality they had last season. Incidentally, the quality that Leixoes had last season seems to have left them already after a poor opening round draw at home to lowly Belenenses. That said, Leixoes’ strength was always in keeping other sides out, which will be Maritimo’s biggest hurdle today. However, if Maritimo take the lead then I fully expect them to win the game. Either way, odds of 4/5 on a home win could and should prove to be a good bet today.

Porto vs CD Nacional – home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10. After a very impressive victory at home to Zenit St.Petersburg mid-week, CD Nacional will be a little tired and looking to the return leg next week in Russia. The Madeira-based outfit know they have a good chance of progression and will no doubt be looking to that game. Today’s game for them will be all about damage limitation, I’m sure. After a disappointing opening game, Porto will be looking to claim their first win of the season to get their campaign up and running. They’ve got no committments mid-week so they’ll be entirely focused on a win today and I feel confident they’ll get it too. Odds of 11/10 for them to beat the -1.75 handicap could prove to be a very good bet indeed.

Penafiel vs Santa Clara – away win at 9/5. An opening day victory and last season’s impressive campaign has done much to give me belief in their ability to win away from home today against newly-promoted Penafiel. The hosts are currently pointless and I expect that to remain the same today if Santa Clara turn up to do the damage. Frankly, 9/5 is a bargain price on an away win although I do emphasise caution because it still is early season.

Fatima vs Trofense – away win at 8/5. Recently relegated Trofense travel to newly-promoted Fatima on the back of an opening day win. Unfortunately for Fatima, this spells trouble as their opponents are already better and more experienced than they are – now they also have the momentum to beat them too! After an opening day defeat for Fatima, an away win at 8/5 looks the only realistic outcome today for this game.

Feirense vs Varzim – home win at 5/6. After an impressive campaign last season, Feirense will be looking to reproduce that kind of form this term. An opening day win away to Desportivo Chaves has done much to reignite their form. Now they’re going to be looking to reproduce their terrific home form from last campaign which saw them finish the season as one of the best home sides in the Liga de Honra. Varzim weren’t so far behind Feirense last season but unfortunately for them, their most notable feature was their abysmal away form, which saw them lose more away games than the vast majority of the division did. Their opening day game was the perfect opportunity for them to display their excellent home form but the chance was not taken as they draw 0-0 at home to Oliveirense, a side that were fortunate to stay in the Liga de Honra last season. All in all, we’re looking at a home win here and it looks good value at 5/6.

Otelul Galati vs Steaua Bucharest – away win at 10/11. A demolition of Ireland’s St.Patrick’s Athletic midweek will have done much to pick up a demoralised Steaua Bucharest after their somewhat surprising home defeat to Unirea Urziceni in their last league match. Today they travel to a semi-decent Otelul Galati who haven’t exactly set the division alight thus far in this campaign. Their home form was decent last year but it’s hard to look beyond a rejuvenated Steaua Bucharest winning today. Odds of 10/11 are welcome on this bet!

Dinamo Bucharest vs CFR Cluj - away win with draw no bet. After yet more trouble in their European game at home mid-week against Czech side Sigma Olomouc, their game was postponed and they’ll almost certainly be kicked out of European football for some time. As you’re probably aware, this isn’t the first incident that Dinamo Bucharest have instigated and there’s no doubt that this will lower the morale of the players even further. The club is already in disarray on so many different levels that it’s hard to see them being able to get a result off title rivals CFR Cluj today. The visitors are nothing if not efficient and the last thing I can see happening is them losing today. An away win with draw no bet looks very favourable indeed.

Dinamo Moscow vs Rubin Kazan - away win at 5/4. An unconvincing draw in Sofia mid-week leaves Dinamo Moscow in no-mans land. Their league form is patchy with some wins and yet some surprises too, no moreso than their defeat inflicted at home by Terek Grozny. Dinamo Moscow are going to be focusing on defeating CSKA Sofia next week because their domestic campaign is unlikely to succeed with their haphazard form so a European run appears to be the best thing that moneybags Dinamo Moscow can hope for. Rubin Kazan have defied all odds this season by reproducing the excellent form they showed last year which again sees them leading the table. With three wins from their past three games, they look formidable opponents, particularly with a scintillating away record which shows that they’re still unbeaten on the road this season. Although it should be a tight game, I feel there’s value in an away win at 5/4.

Artmedia Petrzalka vs MSK Zilina – away win at 5/4. Goal-shy Artmedia Petrzalka gear themselves up for yet another tough tussle but this time it’s with last year’s Corgon Liga runners-up MSK Zilina. The visitors are unbeaten this season and boast an impressive record of four wins from five games. Having only conceded two goals in those five games, MSK Zilina look ruthlessly clinical and efficient and if they go in front against an Artmedia Petrzalka side that just can’t score then they really should hold on to win the game, particularly as the hosts aren’t nearly a match for the visitors today. An away win at 5/4 looks a good bet!

Tatran Presov vs Slovan Bratislava – away win at evens. Bottom of the table Tatran Presov host reigning champions Slovan Bratislava without a win to their name. They’re currently on a rather shameful run that has seen them lose four of their opening five games. Despite having drawn their last game, Slovan Bratislava have won four from their first five games and are currently the biggest goalscorers in the division. A leak, demoralised and poor Tatran Presov look destined to lose this game with considerable ease today and evens are great odds to see it happen at!

Bellinzona vs Grasshoppers Zurich – home win at 6/4. I can’t believe quite how bad Grasshoppers Zurich have become, really. They used to be a real force in Switzerland but seem more of a laughing stock these days. Their away form in the season so far has seen them lose all three of their away games, which just isn’t good enough when you consider that two of those defeats were to sides that they should really be beating. Today they’re travelling to face Bellinzona, who are a decent side at the best of times but they do know how to win at home. Both sides have had relatively disappointing starts to their respective campaigns but the dismal away form of Grasshoppers Zurich points to a home win here today. Odds of 6/4 could prove to be worthwhile on this home win.

Young Boys Bern vs Sion - home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10. Given the current poor form of Basel, Young Boys Bern look clear favourites to win the Super League this season. They’ve won five games from six and drawn the other, scoring a very impressive sixteen goals in the process. Effectively, they average nearly three goals per game and entertain a demoralised Sion side that were comfortably beaten at home by Turkish giants Fenerbahce mid-week. Sion aren’t a particularly good side and they know they’ve got a difficult trip to Turkey coming next week so I suspect their tactics today may well be damage limitation. That’s a very dangerous game to play against Young Boys Bern and I thoroughly expect the hosts to punish them today by beating the -1.75 handicap at excellent odds of 11/10.
