Domzale vs Koper

Woohoo – we are back with an actual choice in games!! Let’s have some beers to celebrate and try to win some money to compensate for shitty Internationals! Well, I say shitty, what I actually mean is fucking abysmal somewhat predictable, which is unfortunately how the bookmakers saw it too!

Before I begin today’s previewed game, however, I’m asking for volunteers to work with our new forum. I’ll explain more for the candidates that email me at thefootytipster@gmail.com.

Moving onto today’s featured game, which is Domzale vs Koper, we have a potentially very valuable away win. This game in the Slovenian Prva Liga sees struggling Domzale entertain league leaders Koper. The hosts are struggling to perform this season with a young and inexperienced team whereas the visitors are proving too strong for just about everyone at the moment, particularly with veteran playmaker Milan Pavlin in such tremendous form. Visitors Koper have won six games from seven this season, a statistic that leaves them unbeaten. They’ve also won all three of their away games in this campaign. Hosts Domzale claimed their first three points of the season last match as they won their first game out of seven attempts, leaving them second bottom of the table. It’s interesting how times change, isn’t i? A couple of years ago I’d be favouring Domzale to win this game but now I’m all over the Koper victory! Koper aren’t massive goalscorers on the road but Domzale are the biggest conceders in the division at home so I’m utterly compelled to take the away win here between these two sides. Frankly, 5/4 looks too good to be true!

Friday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Domzale vs Koper – away win at 5/4 – see introduction for full details.

Oostende vs Beveren – home win at evens. Despite letting me down last time out, I’m going to take Oostende to overcome an underperforming Beveren side. Hosts Oostende are still unbeaten in the Tweede Klasse this year with three wins and one draw from their opening four games. They’re not prolific but they’re generally pretty efficient, at least in this stage of the season. Visitors Beveren are a side I rate rather highly but it’s just not working for them at the moment. One win in three games and a disappointing defeat in their only away game to Boussu Dour Borinage means they’re not shaping up at all well – yet. For those reasons, I’m going to ride the wave and take the home win at evens.

NK Zagreb vs Cibalia Vinkovci – away win at 19/10. This is a very dubious call but one I rather like. Cibalia Vinkovci are a side I would almost never back away from home and yet I find myself doing so for the second time in this particular campaign already! They didn’t disappoint me last time so I’ve got high expectations for them today. Cibalia Vinkovci aren’t a great side. In fact, it’s hard for me to call them a good side. However, they’re a decent side and they’re in-form. Those two factors combined can often be enough to overcome an opponent. However, when that opponent is an NK Zagreb side that have taken zero points from a potential eighteen so far this season, you have to really start to look at the away win without quite so much laughter. Hosts NK Zagreb have leaked nearly three goals a game on average whereas visitors Cibalia Vinkovci have bagged ten goals in their six games played, having won four of them and lost just twice. Generally, Cibalia Vinkovci are a home side through and through so I do emphasise some caution here but I really think they’ve got a good chance today, particularly as they’re a side that haven’t conceded many goals this season at all. In fact, they average conceding a goal once every two games. Lastly, NK Zagreb didn’t even manage to win this game last season so if you’re unsure on the outright away win then consider laying an impotent NK Zagreb today because there certainly seems to be some good value in this game.

Southend United vs Leeds United - away win at 10/11. I don’t know how many times I can point out that Leeds United are better than the majority, if not entirety of this division. Southend United are a decent side on their day but a slow start and just one victory in six games says they’ve not good enough about them at the moment to obtain anything here. True, they’ve only lost one game but they’re playing a much better calibre of opposition today and I fully expect that to show. 10/11 on an away is frankly a gift that should not be overlooked!

Laval vs Istres – home win at evens. Both of these sides have only just been promoted to Ligue 2 but it’s easy to see which side is settling the better at the moment. Hosts Laval sit 5th in the table with three wins from their opening five games, losing just once in this time. They’re unbeaten in their last four games and whereas they’re not prolific goalscorers, they are efficient winners – for now. Istres did the opposite to Laval by starting well and then promptly nose-diving. They’ve now not won in four games and are finding it very, very hard to score goals, amassing a meager two goals in the five games they’ve played. They’ve not scored any away goals in any competition this season and have lost all of their away games (two league games and one cup game). I can’t see this being a classic game or a game filled with goals but a home win does look very tempting at evens.

Metz vs Tours – home win at 4/5. Hosts Metz are a funny side. They don’t ever really seem to cut it consistently so I must emphasise at least a little caution in this game. However, what sways me here is that Tours aren’t good travellers. They weren’t last season as they claimed a poor three away wins from nineteen games despite finishing in a lofty and unexpected 6th place. Tours have started this season the same way as they finished last season – unable to win on the road. True, they’ve only played two games but they’ve drawn with an average Dijon FCO and lost to newly-promoted Laval. Metz were good enough at home last season to be feared and have won both of their home games this season without conceding a goal. They’re better than Tours and have already beaten them at home in the cup this season. For those reasons, a home win at 4/5 looks worthwhile.

Paksi SE vs Debreceni VSC  – away win at 5/6. These odds are too good to be true! Hungarian giants Debreceni VSC haven’t got off to the best start on the road in this campaign as they lost their only game thus far 1-0 to Diosgyori VTK. However, since then they’ve been rampant with three straight wins in the league and four wins (including home and away legs) in the UEFA European Champions League. Suffice to say they’ve really entered their stride now and Paksi SE will have to be at their best tonight to even hope to get something from this game. The hosts are unbeaten at home in their first two games of the Soproni Liga campaign but this is their first real test and it’s a test I just don’t think they’re up to. Frankly, these odds of 5/6 on an away win for Debreceni VSC are ones you are unlikely to see again this season due to the gulf in class between these two sides so I urge you to back them here today.

AGOVV Appeldoorn vs BV Veendam – home win at evens. Hosts AGOVV Appeldoorn have impressed me this season with some good performances and good results. A draw last match has seen them stumble slightly but the fact remains that they’re third in the Eerste Divisie table and have won four games from six this season, losing just once. Visitors BV Veendam have endured a difficult start to their campaign with two wins from six games with both of those being their first two games. They’ve not won in any of their last four games and look susceptible to taste defeat today. There’s not too much between the two sides in terms of quality but I think the hosts just have the edge so evens on the home win looks interesting.

Eindhoven vs Dordrecht ’90 - away win at 11/10. Second-placed Dordrecht ’90 have made a very good start to the season with four wins, one draw and just one defeat from their first six games. They’re unbeaten away from home with an impressive two wins and one draw on the road thus far. However, hosts Eindhoven are a horrible side to bet against, they really are! They’re the ultimate “Jekyll and Hyde” of the Dutch footballing system. They’re not a great side per se but occasionally they play almost as well as their most illustrious neighbours PSV Eindhoven! That makes this game a bit of a risky but given the tremendous form of Dordrecht ’90, I’m tempted to take the away win at 11/10.

Fortuna Sittard vs Cambuur Leeuwarden - away win at 4/5. Hosts Fortuna Sittard have started this season as they ended their last season – badly. They can’t gain any type of momentum and one win in six games makes them prime candidates for relegation if things don’t improve. Unfortunately for them, that’s unlikely to occur today as they entertain a talented Cambuur Leeuwarden who are one of the few sides that were predicted to do well this season that have actually started well this season. Along with Go Ahead Eagles, they’re one of two sides that remain unbeaten in the Eerste Divisie so far this season. They’ve won two of their three awaygames and look set to make it three away wins as they face a lacklustre and powerless Fortuna Sittard today. Odds of 4/5 on the away win look very much worthwhile.

Haarlem vs Helmond Sport - away win at 11/10. I don’t know what’s going on today but three away wins in the Eerste Divisie usually spells trouble! However, Helmond Sport are also looking good for the away win. In this instance, it’s not so much their form/momentum that convinces me but the atrocious form of the hosts today. Helmond Sport have actually drawn their last two games consecutively but are unbeaten on the road this season, they’re the second highest goalscorers on the road thus far and have conceded just once in those games. To me, an abysmal Haarlem team that have lost four in six games don’t stand a chance of getting a result here against a better Helmond Sport so the away win looks a good bet at 11/10.

Odra Wodzislaw vs Korona Kielce – home win at 10/11. This is a tight call but one that I expect to come in. Korona Kielce seem destined to return back to the 1 Liga with their current run of no wins in four games, losing three of them. Hosts Odra Wodzislaw aren’t exactly good themselves but they are better than Korona Kielce to a significant enough level for me to back the home win at 10/11. Odra Wodzislaw have beaten giants Legia Warsaw and an in-form Lechia Gdansk (the only side to do so this season!) already this season. In addition to that, Korona Kielce have played two away games, lost both and still not scored a goal. For me, this game has a narrow home win written all over it and 10/11 on that outcome seems intriguing.

Vitoria Guimaraes vs Naval de Maio – under 1.5 goals at 6/4. Vitoria Guimaraes are nowhere near the force they used to be and still haven’t managed to score a goal in three games so far this season. Their squad isn’t as strong as it used to be, which the above fact lends weight to, and they need to buck up their ideas if they intend on staying in the Liga Sagres this season. Visitors Naval de Maio are in the same position but without the past of some success. Unlike the hosts, Naval de Maio have scored this season – just once, however. Frankly, I predict one of the most boring games you’re likely to come across here and with both sides firing blanks, under 1.5 goals looks a great bet at 6/4!

Pandurii Targu Jiu vs CFR Cluj - away win at 9/10. Tenacious Pandurii Targu Jiu entertain giants CFR Cluj with the visitors having made an impressive start to the season already with three wins from five games. They’ve been beaten just once this season, which was an away trip to title rivals Dinamo Bucharest, and they seem well prepared to launch their usual title challenge. They’ve not won on the road in the two games they’ve played this season but in their defence, those two games were against two title rivals – Dinamo Bucharest and Steaua Bucharest – so I think they can be forgiven. Interestingly, the bookies seem to take their lack of away wins more seriously than I do hence odds of 9/10 on the away win. Don’t get me wrong, Pandurii Targu Jiu are a difficult side to play against on their turf but a well-organised CFR Cluj should have little difficulty winning at a ground where they’ve won three out of their last four visits.

Sibir Nobosibirsk vs Shinnik Yaroslavl’ – home win at 7/5. The beauties that are Sibir Novosibirsk did it the other day against Baltika Kaliningrad so I’m going to back them to do it again against a better side – Shinnik Yaroslavl’. The visitors are arguably the best away side in this division but have lost three of their last five games and two of their last three away games. As they travel to the fortress that is the Spartak Stadium in Novosibirsk, you can’t help but feel that prolific Sibir Novosibirsk are extremely well placed to increase their scintillating home form, particularly on the back of their 6-0 demolition over Baltika Kaliningrad a few days ago. 7/5 on the home win here could be one of the bargains of the day!

Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Today’s featured game is the UEFA Super Cup Final between UEFA Champions League holders Barcelona of Spain and UEFA Cup holders Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine. I don’t think there’s any great secret that Barcelona are better than Shakhtar Donetsk despite a contradicting result at the Nou Camp in the Champions League Group Stages last year as Barcelona were defeated 3-1. The reasoning behind that is that they fielded an under-strength squad due to qualification having already been achieved, although full credit for Shakhtar Donetsk for seizing the initiative against them. Shakhtar Donetsk won’t be too far off the likes of Barcelona in five-ten years time if they continue investing heavily as they currently are. They’ve got a lot of very good players at this club but they’re not quite there yet. Barcelona, however, are virtually the finished article with bags of quality in most areas of the pitch. I’ve watched them in both games against Athletic Club de Bilbao and they carved out so many chances that it was unreal. They’re looking to become even bigger goalscorers this year and I can’t see a better occasion for them to do so than today. They’re a better side, more experienced in Europe and will be ever-so-slightly motivated from their defeat last time out against the Ukrainians, regardless of which squad played them – this is the Catalan way, I’m afraid! For those reasons, taking a Barcelona victory with -1.75 handicap at 11/10 – they’re more than good enough to do it and have the competitive game experience to see it happen.

Friday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Barcelona vs Shakhtar Donetsk – home win with -1.75 handicap at 11/10 – see introduction for full details.

Clermont Foot vs Chateauroux – away win at 15/8. There’s not a great deal of quality difference between these two outfits but I’m riding the momentum here. Chateauroux currently sit atop Ligue 2 with three wins and one draw from their opening four games, which included two impressive wins away to Strasbourg and Angers SCO respectively, two sides that were unlucky not to gain promotion last season. Clermont Foot, by contrast, have lost three of their opening four games and drawn the other. Their main problem is scoring goals, something that is obviously very key in football! Despite having lost to Clermont Foot at home already this season in the Coupe de la Ligue, Chateauroux haven’t lost a league game against them since 2005, which spans a total of six games in which Chateauroux have amassed four wins, three of which were in their last three meetings at either ground. For those reasons, the away win looks ridiculously priced at 15/8 but I’m happy to take those odds and run!

Galway United vs Shamrock Rovers – away win at 10/11. Ever since the loss of O’Shea, Galway United appear to be significantly struggling in the Irish Premier League. Don’t get me wrong, they were hardly a great side prior to his exit but I think it’s fair to say that they were more competitive with him in the side. They’ve lost their last two games consecutively and don’t have the easiest of games at home to high-flying Shamrock Rovers. The visitors themselves have only managed two draws in their last two games but are a better outfit and need the points almost desperately as Bohemians are beginning to pull away at the top of the table. Shamrock Rovers have one of the best away records in the division and also have the additional knowledge that they’ve not lost to Galway United in their last eight meetings, beating them six times, including a victory at this ground last season. All of the above appears to speall out a rather straightforward away win and 10/11 is good odds to see it happen at!

Roda JC vs Vitesse Arnhem – home win at 11/10. There’s not much between these two sides but again, I’m siding with momentum. Roda JC have only been beaten once in their opening four games, winning once and drawing twice. Vitesse Arnhem, rather surprisingly, have lost three of their opening four games, drawing the other game. They had a good campaign last year but already look to be struggling this year. Most campaigns are a struggle for Roda JC – they’re used to it by now – but they’ve strengthened the squad over summer by a substantial amount, enough to perhaps achieve a mid-table finish this season. That said, there’s still not much between these two sides so I’d recommend keeping bets low for this game. What did finally tip the scales in Roda JC’s favour for me was that they’ve won this exact fixture for two years running now; I can’t see it being a problem against a weaker Vitsese Arnhem than they’ve previously faced. I think 11/10 on a home win is good value though, even if both sides are struggling to find the net!
