Kerkyra vs Olympiakos Volos

Today’s featured game is the Greek B Ethniki game in Corfu between Kerkyra and Olympiakos Volos. These two sides are both playing excellently so far this season and occupy first and second place respectively.

Kerkyra have long been one of the better sides in this division and it’s about time they joined the elite in the Super League. This year could well be their year too with twelve wins in seventeen games, losing just once along the way. Kerkyra’s promise has largely stemmed from their flawless home form which has seen them win all eight of their home games, averaging scoring 2.5 goals per game and conceding just over a goal per every two games. Kerkyra have won four out of their last five games so their momentum is very strong, which naturally perfectly compliments their skill level, making Kerkyra a formidable force in the B Ethniki at the present time.

Visitors Olympiakos Volos trail leaders Kerkyra by eight points currently as their home form has been a tad more human than their hosts’ today. Olympiakos Volos have scored more goals on the road than any other B Ethniki side has this season with an average of nearly two goals scored per game. However, Olympiakos Volos are yet to encounter a side with the quality level of Kerkyra so I suspect the fact that Olympiakos Volos have already lost two out of eight away games this season may be more relevant than the fact that they’ve won four out of their eight away games. Olympiakos Volos concede an awful lot of away goals too, something which will play right into the hands of Kerkyra today.

Lastly, the head-to-head records show that Kerkyra have won five out of their last seven meetings with Olympiakos Volos at either ground. Although it only grants a minor mental edge, the edge is still relevant when there’s a game between two closely-matched sides and I feel that Kerkyra have enough in their favour to take three points from this game today.

Verdict: Kerkyra to win at 11/8.

Monday’s Picks

My tips:

Egypt vs Cameroon – Egypt to win at 7/5.

I hate doing previews for games like this because there’s really very little I can actually write!

Basically, Egypt have turned up in this tournament as I’ve expected them to. Their performances have been efficient and reliable and the reigning champions are showing no signs of letting go of their trophy. Tactically, Egypt are one of the best sides in the tournament, if not the best side in the tournament, so they know what it’s all about. They’ve got some good players in their squad and they’ve got a lot of hard work too so they’re generally a handful for whoever they face in this tournament. Egypt have won every game that they’ve played so far and have scored at least two goals in each of their games. I expected Egypt to do well but to show this level of potency actually surprises me; Egypt tend to win in a more low-key fashion but it’s a welcome change in style nonetheless.

Cameroon are a side that I don’t personally feel have played well yet and I don’t see them getting past this round, in all honesty. They’ve got a few fantastic individuals but struggle as a team. Cameroon have only won one African Nations game so far, which was a hard-fought and somewhat fortuitous victory over Zambia. They’ve managed to lose to Gabon without scoring and draw with a resilient Tunisia. The game with Tunisia was what convinced me that this was a good bet, actually – Tunisia employ a similar style of football as Egypt without their same level of incisive attacking and ruthless finishing and Cameroon really struggled against them. Egypt should be the perfect side to expose what is frankly a rather poor “team” in Cameroon so long as their few stars don’t shine on the day.

Verdict: Egpyt to win at 7/5.

I think a treble with Charlton Athletic, Lecce, and Kerkyra at 5/1 could boast some value today so give that some thought.

Vicenza vs Mantova

Today’s featured game sees Vicenza host Mantova in a Italian Serie B match. The hosts bear a rather remarkable home record this season as they’ve played five games and drawn all of them! Vicenza’s main problem has been scoring goals at home although they should have additional impetus to score goals as they managed to score two away to Crotone in their last outing. Vicenza have only been beaten once in Serie B this season so we’re already well aware of their ability to be difficult opponents. Although somewhat lacking in terms of incision at home, they cannot be accused of that away from home as they’ve scored eight goals in five away games, a tally that only three sides in Serie B currently better. Therefore, there’s no doubting Vicenza’s potential to win the game, merely their execution. I feel the odds of 4/5 reflect the bookies’ hesitancy on Vicenza’s reliability to win games and justifiably so given the records mentioned above. However, I’m taking a gamble on Vicenza claiming their first home win of the season here, not only because they’re the better side and are capable of doing so but because Mantova are a truly woeful away side. They’ve lost four from five away games so far this season, including one draw. They’ve managed to score just three times on that run and have conceded more away goals than all barring two sides in Serie B. Mantova have lost three of their last five games, winning just once, and when compared to Vicenza’s record of two wins, two draws, and just one defeat over their past five games, you have to feel the home win is a very realistic possibility here. Lastly, if you’re going to bet on this game then I’d at least recommend not watching it – not all value bets are good to watch and this game has yielded just one goal over the past three times it’s been played, which tells us we’re in for a boring and low-scoring game. Nonetheless, taking the home win at 4/5 could have significant value today.

Monday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Vicenza vs Mantova – home win at 5/6 – see introduction for full details.

SL Benfica vs CD Nacional – home win with -2.75 handicap at 9/4. Although I do rate CD Nacional, I find SL Benfica utterly irresistable this year. They’re scoring goals for fun and haven’t looked this good in many years now. A 5-1 annihlation of Everton in the UEFA Europa League last week did much to indicate just how far they’ve come since acquiring the likes of Javier Saviola at the club. The fact that they currently average approximately 3.5 goals per game is a large part of my risky -2.75 goal handicap today although their form also plays a big part too. SL Benfica have won five consecutive Liga Sagres games and just look frankly terrifying with goals coming from everywhere. CD Nacional are no pushovers but SL Benfica are good enough to break the 2.75 handicap here today so the question is – are CD Nacional in a position where it’s possible for them to lose by such a margin? Well, they’re returned from an unsuccessful trip to Bilbao mid-week after losing 2-1 to Athletic Club de Bilbao in the UEFA Europa League. Although having won three consecutive games in the Liga Sagres, what must be taken into account is that CD Nacional have scored just once in three away games and have conceded five goals along the way. Therefore, I personally feel that a potentially jaded CD Nacional could well face the wrath of a dominant SL Benfica tonight. In my eyes, the home win with -2.75 handicap at 9/4 could boast some great value here tonight.
