Today’s secondary featured game is the Serie A dual between Internazionale and SSC Napoli.

Generally speaking, these two sides are pretty well-matched nowadays. I’d argue that Inter have more depth but Napol have more stability although that’s it as far as differences go, really.

So why get involved in what should be a tense game with plenty of rivalry? Well, two reasons, really. The first is the appointment of Ranieri because I rate him highly as a manager in Italy and the effect on his players could already be seen during their 2-3 win at CSKA Moscow earlier this week in the UEFA Champions League. He’s given them more confidence and their goalscoring ratio should improve with that in mind.

The second reason is because Napoli are missing their absolute best striker by a mile – Cavani. Napoli are not a one-man team but I find it hard to envision them scoring goals without the talented Uruguayan marksman. Napoli have got other talented attacking players but none of them possess the lethal ability that Cavani has in front of goal and that could and should hurt them today.

Both sides have absentees today so do approach it with caution. However, given Inter’s firepower and Napoli’s absence of their best attacker, I think that there’s some value in taking an Inter win at evens.

Verdict: Internazionale to win at evens.

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Mons vs Lokeren – lay Mons at 4/5.

I must confess that upon seeing the odds for Mons winning this game, my initial thoughts were “what the fuck?”. Mons have started well; yes. They deserve respect for it, in fact. However, are we seriously suggesting that they’ll end the season with as good a home record as they have now? I doubt it very much. They’ve done well to score so many goals at home this season but look at the quality (or lack of!) sides that they’ve faced whilst doing so and it makes at least a bit more sense. Mons will obviously have momentum from this run and that’s something to be wary of but how they’re so short here I don’t know.

For me, Lokeren nowadays are an established top-five side in Belgium. They’ve got a solid foundation, good cohesion, and great ability to put the ball in the net. They occasionally lack in temperament but their ability with a football is more than good enough for them to not only avoid defeat here but win the game too.

I actually do expect Lokeren to edge this one, quality-wise. Mons aren’t an easy side to beat but nor are Lokeren and thus laying the newly-promoted hosts at 4/5 interests me a lot today.

Verdict: Lay Mons at 4/5.

Nomme Kalju vs Levadia Tallinn – home win at 7/5.

These odds look pretty juicy to me! Levadia have to attack Nomme Kalju here as defeat means they’re effectively out of the Meistriliiga title race. However, losing here means that their bitter rivals Flora Tallinn will have yet more competition during the final stages of the season and Levadia may not find that idea too unsettling! Nomme Kalju are a good side, in all fairness. They have good firepower and despite the shitty condition of their home pitch, they should be able to forage a win against a Levadia side that purely relies on the ability of their old midfielders for guidance.

Verdict: Nomme Kalju to win at 7/5.

Vitesse Arnhem vs Heerenveen – home win at evens.

This should be an interesting game with plenty of goals, in my view! However, we can say what we want about Vitesse’s away form but their home form is just oustanding and has been for a year or so now. Vitesse have played three times at the GelreDome this season and won all of those games, scoring eleven times along the way. Their injury list is finally lessening and their talented young attackers are developing one another’s game well, especially under talented boss van der Brom. Vitesse are getting closer to being the big side that they crave to be and all the elements are already there for all to see. All good sides have to win their home games and given Vitesse’s form at home this season, you have to expect them to continue it here.

Heerenveen are a funny side, though. They can beat anyone on their day but their trouble is that their “day” is pretty rare nowadays! They’ve got a lot of firepower themselves but their defence is vulnerable and that does cost them points. They don’t pay much attention to their defence either, which doesn’t help, as they’re an attacking side by nature and will surely do as they always do here today.

I respect Heerenveen’s attacking approach but think they’ll come unstuck here. Vitesse are not a side to underestimate at home and looking at the quality in their ranks, taking the home win at evens interests me a lot today.

Verdict: Vitesse Arnhem to win at evens.
