Queens Park Rangers vs Reading

Today’s featured game is the Championship match between Queens Park Rangers and Reading. I lose track of whether Queens Park Rangers are actually the richest British club or not these days but my concern was that they hadn’t previously showed their credentials despite their monetary advantage. However, recent weeks have finally seen them emerging as some kind of force although on time will tell if it lasts the distance. They’ve won three out of their first games and currently boast an unbeaten record at home, something only five sides can match after just twelve games. Queens Park Rangers have managed to score ten goals in their last four games, scoring four past promotion hopefuls Preston North End last match, which has been arguably their most impressive result this season. Today, Queens Park Rangers are hosting a Reading side that really show just how much they miss the players they lost in the summer. Reading currently stand just outside the relegation zone with just two wins from twelve games. They’ve lost three from their last five games and generally look susceptible to defeat against the majority of sides at the present time. I can see why the bookies would give good odds on this game but I really think Queens Park Rangers have enough to make this bet a good value bet tonight.

Tuesday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Queens Park Rangers vs Reading – home win at 4/5 – see introduction for full details.

Liverpool vs Olympique Lyonnais – under 2.5 goals at 5/6. This is an interesting call considering that both sides are more than capable of scoring goals but at the moment I think they’re both slightly under-performing. I’d argue that Olympique Lyonnais have more attacking firepower than Liverpool because Liverpool only have one class striker – Olympique Lyonnais have a lot of quality attackers i.e. Lopez, Gomis. However, Olympique Lyonnais somehow managed to lose 2-0 at home to Sochaux in Ligue 1 at weekend, a baffling result not only because Olympique Lyonnais lost at home and didn’t score but also because they lost to one of the worst away sides in the division. Similarly, Liverpool lost 1-0 at Sunderland and can frankly consider themselves lucky to have left that game with nothing! Either way, both sides enter this game having not scored a goal in their last games respectively and Liverpool also miss striker Fernando Torres, which is a massive blow to them. Basically, I’d expect two misfiring teams to bring about a low-scoring encounter for obvious reasons. I’d actually not be surprised if Olympique Lyonnais got a win or a draw here – English sides notoriously struggle with French sides. For the above reasons, taking under 2.5 goals at 5/6 looks a good call to me.

Middlesbrough vs Derby County - lay Middlesbrough at 11/10. I’m afraid my reasoning for this one isn’t as reliable as normal but it’s got a point to it nonetheless. Basically, Middlesbrough fans hate manager Gareth Southgate. What does this mean? Well, the team get booed at home most of the time, especially when they’re losing, so much so that some sides (i.e. Watford) have used this against the home side in order to obtain a result. It’s no coincidence that despite Middlesbrough boasting a better side than most of the Championship they’ve still managed to lose their last three home games in a row. Whereas I don’t rate Derby County as a particularly good side nowadays, they are relatively organised and despite their woeful away record, I think there’s a chance they’ll get a draw here. Frankly, laying Middlesbrough at 11/10 may be risky but with the home fans turning on the manager in such a fashion that it affects the team’s performances, you have to feel it’s got some foundation to it.

Peterborough United vs Plymouth Argyle

Today’s featured game is the English Championship clash between Peterborough United and Plymouth Argyle. Despite both sides having made very poor starts to their respective campaigns, the only one of the two to have shown significant determination and tenacity to get themselves out of the mess they’re in is Peterborough United, which is largely due to talented manager Darren Ferguson, in my opinion. They’ve shown some inexperience whilst a lack of clinical finishing has seen them drop points this season too, so I daresay you could label them as “unlucky”. Peterborough United have looked a lot better in recent games, however, sufficiently enough for me to back them today. Well, that coupled with the fact that they’re playing a poor Plymouth Argyle side with no momentum or morale at the present time. Still winless in the Championship, Plymouth Argyle have the unenviable away record of having played four games, lost three and drawn once. They’ve also lost the last five games consecutively, inlcuding  a particularly disappointing defeat at home to Nottingham Forest last match without even scoring a goal. Hosts Peterborough United have only lost one game in their last five, drawing three and winning once. Their main hurdle tonight is going to be goalscoring but if they achieve that, then they’ll make 4/5 on the home win a very good bet indeed, particularly as the visitors today have scored just two goals in their last five games and the hosts have scored six goals in their last five league games. For me, there’s enough value in the home win at 4/5 for me to back it despite both sides being somewhat unruly and poor at the moment!

Tuesday’s Picks

My tips:

As ever, below are my recommended value tips for today in no particular order:

Peterborough United vs Plymouth Argyle – home win at 4/5 – see introduction for full details.

Rangers vs Sevilla CF - away win at evens. There are few sides who get an easy ride at Ibrox because it’s one of the most intimidating European venues a side can travel to. Let’s face it – it has to be because if the Scots relied upon football alone, they’d get nowhere. Strictly speaking, Rangers genuinely aren’t good enough to be on the same field as Sevilla CF, as harsh as it may seem. Even the most ardent of Rangers fans would have a tremendous task ahead of them to convince me otherwise. However, the fact remains that a cold and wet Scotland isn’t exactly the favourite place of travelling Spaniards. That said, Sevilla CF not only have tremendous ability but they also have momentum after a very good start in their domestic campaign with four wins from five games, all four of which have come in their last four games. The lethal attacking power of Luis Fabiano, Frederic Kanoute, Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas is enough to grind out a result against anyone, let alone a side that’s not as good as they are. My main concern is how they adapt to what will be a hostile atmosphere and a difficult venue but I honestly think they’ve got enough quality to win this game. I’d keep punts around the medium mark but it’s definitely worth a flutter at evens.

Preston North End vs Reading - home win at 4/5. Hosts Preston North End enter this game with a home record of four games, three wins and one draw, thus leaving them unbeaten. Preston North End have long threatened to break into the Premier League but have never managed to fulfill that potential for varying reasons. However, their form so far this season appears to suggest otherwise so it’ll be interesting to see how their season develops. They’ve won three from their last four games so their momentum is strong, as is their actual ability. They’re hosting a Reading side that really signalled the end of the intent to be in the Premier League for many years to come in summer last year. They simply had to be promoted to be able to cope financially but that didn’t happen so half of their big players had to leave, leaving a fragmented and disjointed Reading squad – and it’s shown. One win in all nine of their Championship games this season shows just where they’re at currently and it doesn’t look to be getting better anytime soon. They’ve not obtained a victory in their last four games, losing twice and drawing twice along the way. Interestingly, Reading have lost at Preston North End for four out of their last five visits, which is quite an intimidating statistic. Based on the above information, a home win looks likely at 4/5.

Hereford United vs Bournemouth – away win at 10/11. League leaders Bournemouth are running riot on this division this year! Eight wins from nine games says that they’re looking virtually unstoppable at the present time. They’re going to come unstuck at somepoint because they’re not scoring enough goals to get them through difficult times. However, that time isn’t today in my opinion ’cause they’re travelling to Hereford United, a side that has won just one game from nine so far this season and have lost two of their last three games. I don’t think there’s as much between these two sides as the league placing suggests but I do believe that the momentum present indicates only one winner and the away win at 10/11 looks good value because of it.
